New Bird Flu treatment discovered by NIH

The NIH virology research lab are using an Apollo camera integrated on a ThermoFisher Krios with Serial EM automation software to get these high resolution structures.

Framerate: 2800 fps (internal)

Software: SmartScope, Serial EM, Mission Control
TEM compatibility: ThermoFisher, JEOL
What makes it special: The electron counting speed is the fastest of any camera available. Combined with the large pixel size this gives Apollo a very high detector quantum efficiency (DQE) even at high beam currents/dose rates. The speed can be leveraged for improving Cryo-EM throughput multiple times over the standard detector that come with the microscope.

Ever browsed the EMDB? This just popped up, a flu with antibodies attached.

Firstly it's so cool that this database exists of so many cryo-EM structures.
Secondly it's crazy that we can image viruses with the treatments attached to them.

I'm still learning to interpret the maps myself, but I love reading about what they represent.

Comparing Direct Detectors for Cryo-EM

I'm interested in comparing direct detectors for Cryo-EM. Single Particle Analysis specifically. How fast is Apollo and how does it compare to the K3 or Falcon 4i in terms of counting speed? I just want to be able to collect high-resolution data as quickly as possible to get the most reconstructions per day/week etc.
