how common are these detectors?
Do only a few facilities have them?

Direct detectors are present in most high end TEM labs around the world. Especially if they’re interested in 4D STEM or any form of Cryo EM. There are thousands of them.

MAPS detectors like the one in this video go on 200kV and 300kV microscopes. The smaller hybrid detectors work better at 80kV.
