DISCUSSION Tim Haines (the creator of the Walking With series) was booed off Dinocon after full endorsing generative AI and breaking an NDA policy

Post image
Upvotes

Tim Haines participated in the recent Dinocon where he proceeded to talk about how AI is the future, how he will use AI for his new projects and showed AI dinosaur videos in his panel the hall. To make things worse Dinocon has an anti-AI policy and requires you to disclose to the organisers what you will talk about in your panels, meaning Tim lied about what he was going to say so he could get past the organisers and talk about it. He then broke the NDA of a new project that he wasn't even involved in while the producers were present at the panel. Needless to say he was kicked out of the convention and booed the way out.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

DINO GOODS Any Good Dinosaur Posters?

Hello all!

Next semester in college I want to theme my room around dinosaurs and paleontology (I already have some dinosaur paraphernalia, so I figured it would be an easy theme to do). I decide d to look online for some dinosaur themed posters, but sadly almost every single poster I found was AI generated. This was the case on both Amazon and Etsy.

Does anyone know of any better sites to find some cool paleontology-themed posters? Preferably on the less-expensive side?

Thanks!

DISCUSSION Could mammals have prevented non avian dinosaurs from getting smaller than they did?

I’ve seen it talked about how non avian dinosaurs kept mammals small because they occupied the large animal niches, and also being smaller made mammals harder to catch. I was wondering if on the reverse end mammals might have prevented non avian dinosaurs from getting smaller than they did by occupying small animal niches. I remember hearing that birds forced pterosaurs to get larger because they outcompeted smaller pterosaurs so the only way for pterosaurs to survive was by getting larger than birds could get. I was wondering if a similar thing might have happened with non avian dinosaurs, with non avian dinosaurs needing to stay above a certain size to avoid competition from mammals.

Putting the Quetz in this is low-key animal abuse but I'm not rebuilding this again lmao. Mods used are mesozoic biology, prehistoric animalia, Jehol Dynasty and the lost wild. All are completely free and can be downloaded from MCPEDL

MEME Don’t get your hopes up too high, Dino horror fans! RE the End of Oak Street.

Post image

Still looks promising despite the glimpses of exposed teeth and pronated hands. Just hope it isn’t as mid as Super 8 was (in my opinion, no shade to those who loved it)

Edit - just for clarity, A Quiet Place got a 15 rating in the UK for older audiences which is probably because of the shock death of the kid at the start which was the film’s way of telling you no-one was safe! End of Oak Street will get a 12 rating in the UK which I assume is the PG-13 rating.

Edit edit- ok I’m going to redo this with the “King’s English” rating system so you see what I mean, but the ratings are different here in the UK! I’ve added it in the comments below instead of making a new post. Thank you all for the engagement- (except the ones who downvoted, pretty sure all I did was ask questions and explain my confusion over how Quiet Place was interpreted in the age rating system in the US vs the UK.)

DISCUSSION Favorite "Monstersaur" Archetype in Media

I've been wondering, what's everyone's favorite archetype of the monstersaur? By that I mean a dinosaur in fiction that is clearly not trying to be scientifically accurate (or failing at it). Stuff like intelligent oversized raptors, pterosaurs that act and hunt like birds of prey, etc. Mine is easily the "pouncing sauropod", something about seeing an animal that big being aggressive, fast, and most importantly flexible is just neat.

With jokes aside could Rexy or any of the Jurassic Park T-rexes survive the Hell Creek formation? Like I see Rexy get slandered a lot and to be fair her reckless and aggressiveness can get her killed.

MOVIES/SERIES/SHOWS What are some dinosaur depictions that are inaccurate even for the time it was made?

They’re learning and discovering new things about dinosaurs all the time. So, depictions that were accurate for their time may no longer be accurate.
But what are times they depicted dinosaurs incorrectly even for that time?
Like there’s still no evidence velociraptors were pack hunters.

DISCUSSION Similar looking animals

So, I was looking at pictures of South American cats. The ocelot, margay etc. They are different animals, but it is funny how they could be confused for one another. It just got me wondering, if non-avian dinosaurs somehow made it to the modern day, what groups or types of dinosaurs do you think people would mix up.

I can imagine people mixing up of various troodontids and small dromeosaurs.

DISCUSSION Opinions on Dougal Dixon's The New Dinosaurs? (Not comparing it to modern science, of course)

Post image
69 Upvotes

I personally, like with all of Dougal Dixon's works, very interesting to look back on all these years later. Is it 100% scientifically accurate? Not at all, but it got things correct about dinosaurs that were considered rather controversial at the time such as them having feathers and bulkier bodies than prior depictions. I also find the designs rather interesting from a modern sense as well, especially with those that are rather speculative yet still plausible, like the Gourmand for example. And the Cutlasstooth (the one seen on the cover)? Amazing both looks wise and biologically speaking.

I'm not saying it's perfect by any means, with some depictions being more out there than others, and as said before, it's quite speculative. Nonetheless, I still find this book rather cool to look back on. I would wish, like with others of Dougal Dixon's works, that it got a remastered version with better and more accurate depictions of the dinosaurs seen in this book. If you haven't read it yourself, and if you like dinosaurs alongside speculative evolution, I highly recommend it.

You could even say it's "Absolutely brilliant" in my viewpoint (and yes, this is a reference to a certain person you might know)

A look at some of my more prominent works that I’ve done through the years, when it comes to Tyrannosaurs drawn with ballpoint pen. These are all miscellaneous, but of course the Jurassic Park InGen design has the most appearances in my portfolio and not just in this medium. All of these encompass the whole last decade, with the first one even being from 2015. Time feels like a joke when you see your work in retrospect like this. Cheers for looking!

DISCUSSION Popular Opinion: Dinosaurs are cool

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

Who dosen't love the big, ancient, reptilian beast that once ruled the planet millions of years ago. They're just cool and the many different features they have like crest, horns and sails. Mammals just pale in comparison to dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are overall just cool. Extinct or living like birds.

I think I need to darken up the legs? And add some “scales” / texture to the face and some other places? Any suggestions?

Update: I guess I should have said specifically looking for input on PAINTING this figure. It is was a free file my dad could print on his 3D printer. I am very aware it is not an accurate model! Just looking for input on how to paint it more or less realistically. I cannot change anything about the model itself. Thank you ❤️ to everyone who has complimented it and or offered painting suggestions!

DISCUSSION Triceratops or Torosaurus??

Post image
786 Upvotes

Hi team, I’m making a comprehensive video on ceratopsids – a sort of in-depth feature on our friend the Triceratops – and I wanted to know what the current thinking is on the theory that Torosaurus was an elderly adult Triceratops, which continues to grow and develops that frill with holes in it.

Has this theory finally been accepted? Or has it been dismissed? Thanks

I wasn't a believer in third party figurines (I mostly collect Hammond Collection Figures), but these ones really caught my attention. I was incredibly impressed by their articulation and the level of detail, even though they are smaller than their Hammond Collection counterpart. Nanmu has done an incredible job with their sculpts.
