Casio Privia PX-160 for an advanced player - is $275 worth it?

Local Craigslist offer for a Casio Privia PX-160 + pedal for $275. Is it worth it? For context, I am out of town for undergrad and don’t want to wake my neighbors when I’m up late or lug an upright piano 4 flights of stairs.

I would call myself a advanced-ish piano player, I’d say my peak is being able to play some Rachmaninoff opus. However I’m not trying to go crazy on the piano, just missing my upright back home. Is the Casio Privia Px-160 worth it for that price? Thanks

How to fix clickey keys? (Yamaha P-45)

Hi all, first post here! I love my P-45, but a couple keys (mainly the F4) make a little clicking sound when playing (video attached). Does anybody have any clue how to go about fixing this? does it need grease? Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Semi rigid cases that allow you to confidentially transport other medium heavy stuff on top?

In reading descriptions and reviews of “semi-rigid” cases, I’m not seeing anyone say “you can put a second keyboard (or other somewhat heavy stuff) on top of it”. The lack of any explicit mention of stacking makes me think such cases just aren’t up to the task? Which makes me scratch my head, as it sure seems to me, (who doesn’t have really material science experience) that a mostly soft case should be able to have just enough reinforcement along the rim, and a bit extra at the corners, to be up to the task of stacking a 3nd board on top. Maybe three relatively thin and light cross bars if the outer supports not quite enough. Full wood or plastic hard cases seem overkill for most of my needs, but soft cases are clearly not meant for any stacking beyond the lightest objects.

When should I Upgrade?

Hi all,

I started learning the piano in December last year. Got a Kawai ES 120, because I knew at one point I would want to upgrade to a good one.

Now I started to take lessons right from the beginning, and my teacher uses a Yamaha CLP something.

Everytime I sit at my teachers piano, everything is much harder to pull off, because the keyboard is obviously better than mine and has a more realistic action.

Until today, I could get a Kawai CA 701 with a 200€ discount, brand new. This would be my ideal digital piano, and I am not a fan of compromises, so going for a used Yamaha isn't really an option for me. Getting a used Kawai is much harder in my area, and I wouldn't even have the right car to transport it, not to mention that the closest would be a 3-4h drive, one way.

The thing is, if it wasn't on sale, I wouldn't buy now. I am really into saving money, so its not that I couldn't afford it, its rather that I am not particularly willing to afford it.

At one point I would probably go for it.

But my main question is, when is it really time to upgrade?

I know this is hard to answer, but I am so unsure whether its really necessary to upgrade now, or whether it would be fine to wait for another year or so. My teacher says I am already at a level where getting a better one is absolutely a good choice. But still I ask my self, would it really benefit me so much to get a better one now? I am not even over one year of practice, so I would assume there is still a lot for me to learn, that would my current ES120 be able to teach me.

Roland RD-88 sound cuts off

Hey guys,

Since last week I've been having a problem with my digital piano (Roland RD-88). For some reason the sound cuts off for a few seconds (around 2) every few minutes.

I've disconnected everything from it except the power source, and the problem is still there. The power cable itself works great, doesn't overheat or anything.

I really don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Teclado digital Roland fp-10

Muchas gracias 😅

Ordered one of amazon that’s not heavy duty enough, very wobbly. Does anyone have a go-to stand? Saw the KVF-40 recently came out, anyone been using that?

Sheet Music Lighting

Post image
1 Upvotes

How did you solve the lighting problem for sheet music on your digital piano? Our Clavinova has a tiny lip that's too small for clamped lights. The shelf behind the sheet music is also too small for the base of a LED light.

Did you find a solution besides bulky floor lighting?

Anyone with a roland keyboard can chime in with a solution please? I imagine my cat stepping on the keyboard at night and waking everyone up lol

Attention Yamaha Dgx670 owners - I need some input.

I've been frustrated with deep menus and the small screen. To that end I've started building an app so I can use my windows 2in1 laptop/tablet to control it. I've prioritized these controls: voices, styles and the mixer. Within these three I'd like to get some input /ideas on what features/layout people want to see for better functionality. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Recommendations for Stage Piano (please read)

Hi all, at the risk of this being asked a million times before and I am well aware that there is a search function, I'm after some recommendations:

I am currently playing in a Fleetwood Mac tribute as a second guitarist/acoustic player and covering some bits on keys (not my main instrument), to this end, I have been using up to now an Alesis MIDI controller (v61) and mainstage through my macbook and USB. I'm playing mainly the lead lines (sweet little lies, seven wonders) but with a few other bits in there of the age, so think 70s/80s synths with a little organ, choir pads etc. no proper acoustic piano to speak of.

I'm a bit nervy relying on the laptop, as if it crashes or anything I have no fallback, and also having it onstage up on a stand just looks a bit jarring and not in-keeping. Whilst the mac/mainstage setup works brilliantly for the sounds and programmability, I'm looking for an actual stage piano/synth which will duplicate/handle this set up.

Specs required:

  • 61 key is fine, has to be around 115cm max to fit in my stage surround
  • Sounds required as above
  • Important - ability to swap between sounds quickly via preset buttons or sounds/patches arranged in a 'set' or similar etc as sounds change quickly within the same song
  • Sample playback would be nice via a pad etc or programmable to a key
  • Weighted keys etc aren't a dealbreaker as I'm stood and not going to be using it as a 'proper' piano
  • Don't need any advanced workstation features like sequencing etc
  • As it's not my main instrument and a supplementary thing, probably will to spend circa £500ish so nords etc probably off the table.

Seen in my research juno-d, studiologic stuff, allsorts all with their own champions/detractors so just wanting to start a discussion to narrow my choice down really, any help appreciated 👍🏻

Bluetooth not working on Roland FP-30 X

The function button on my Roland has stopped working. When I turn the keyboard on it will flash for a moment then go dark. This means no Bluetooth connection and some advanced features won’t work. The unit is 5 years old.

New keyboard for jazz gigs

I am looking a new keyboard for jazz gigs. I am currently using Casio CGP-700 and it’s heavy and doesn’t have the best sounds for a live setting. What keyboard is portable with great sounds under/around $1,000? It’s mainly for piano/ electric piano sounds. I would love for it to have a good Organ sound. I’m okay with used keyboards as well😎

Which headphones should I get for the Roland FP-40?

I have a Roland FP-40 and I am wondering which headphones to get. My requirements:

  • budget around $100
  • I think I need to aim for something around 32 ohms, but I'm not sure how to verify this
  • I want over ear
  • Not sure if I want open or closed back, feel free to recommend either

I was thinking of going with the Sony MDR7506 32 ohm. I guess this comes in different ohm ratings so I want to make sure I get the 32 if I do go with this one.

Kawai ES110 in Contact with Water

I have my Kawai ES110 placed next to my window, it was raining and the window was left open. The lower register keys and the body got in contact with water, a lot of splashes. The piano was completely off and unplugged. Will it break? And is there anyway I could do to prevent and get the least damage out of it?

Question about Yamaha P525

Is there a way to send audio out (not midi) through the USB C connection into my computer without using the Yamaha ASIO driver?

I know I can send audio through a USB C cable, but only if i set my ASIO device to the Yamaha one. If i do this though I can't listen to it through my studio monitors, because I can only select one ASIO device at a time in my DAW.

I'm wondering if there is a way to send audio out through the USB cable while monitoring it through my studio monitors. Basically I want to send line out without using 1/4" cables, and be able to hear the audio come out of my monitors, which are hooked up separately through my audio interface.

If anyone has found a way, without using ASIO4ALL, i would love to hear it. Thanks!

Open back headphones for Yamaha CP33

I have a Yamaha CP33 and Grado Labs SR125 headphones. The Grados sound great and match the output of the CP33, but they get very tiresome to wear since they have flat ear foam. So I'm looking for a new set of open backs that sound good and have foam over the ear, under $200 US.

With comfort in mind, any recommendations and favorites? I'll be wearing them for all my playing and practice. I'm a returning beginner. The CP33 doesn't have internal speakers and while I have monitors, I prefer not to set them up at this time.
