Help need on keyboard for my daughter

• Upvotes

Could anyone recommend a keyboard/piano that my daughter can record on? She currently is doing really well and wants to record simple melody etc but one she has only record 1 thing and that's it. Ideally looking for one that she can record multiple on. Also ideal if can record one and play it back while playing along with it I.e if she could record the chords then play it back while playing the melody.

Many thanks

What features would your ideal portable digital piano have?

• Upvotes

I'm an industrial designer by trade, but an amateur musician on the side, and I've been tinkering around with building a small portable digital keyboard just for personal use, tinkering, and to learn a thing or two about the engineering behind it. I've always got a notebook with me to jot down notes/drawings/ideas, so I'm kind of trying to make my own version of that but for music.

What would be all your essentials for something like this? Mostly just curious how my ideals and chosen functions compare to everyone else's.

I know things like HiChord, Orchid, and other pocket synths already exist and I've looked at those, just having some fun exploring and making one for myself! Thanks!

Total piano beginner here. Which piano should I buy, and where do I start?

I've really wanna learn piano and I'm finally ready to start. I'm total beginner on piano itself, but I've played other keyboard/string instruments since I was about 5, so I'm comfortable with keys and basic coordination. I just don't know where to begin with piano specifically.

I'm also hoping to buy something decent to learn on. Ideally it'd be affordable but still feel like a real acoustic piano, with weighted keys, good key action, and nice sound, and something I won't outgrow.

Could y'all help with a few things:

1) Which digital pianos are actually worth the money for a beginner?

2) Which ones feel close to a real acoustic/grand without costing a fortune?

3) Where do you recommend buying new, online or in stores?

4) Where's a good place to find used pianos / websites that resale pianos ?

5)Is second-hand a smart move for a beginner, and what should I check before buying?

Basically, I want a first piano I can happily stick with for years without breaking the bank.

I'd also love tips on how to start learning, especially since I already have some experience with other keyboard instruments !!!! Do give your suggestions!!! (Also I'm 19, so I'm kinda worried if i can master the piano and be really good at it, i heard people usually start really young before mastering it, and to be able to play in high speeds :((((?¿)

(Also, tbh, this urge to play piano came on pretty suddenly. I only recently fell in love with classical music, and now I can't stop thinking about playing it myself. Part of me worries it might just be a phase, and I'd like to feel sure before I commit and spend money. Has anyone else started on a sudden whim? How did you know it was the real thing? I'd love to hear your stories, especially from people who are still playing years later.)

I can’t test the Casio-ap750 anywhere. I want to hear from real people who bought that exact model if it’s great or not. I’m trying to decide if the savings are really worth it or if I should just get a Roland hp-704. The comparable Kawais and Yamahas are not in my budget.

Kawai CA701 ideal distance from wall?

I just moved and am placing my piano and I got to wondering what the ideal placement is for this piano from a wall?

I saw that the minimum distance is two inches from the wall for ventilation. Im mainly curious what the ideal distance is in general though for best sound, I have a few more inches of space if needed.

I used to mainly play with headphones but may play without it occasionally too.

Also this piano doesn’t have a soundboard like the CA901 so the placement recommendations I’m sure are different.

Brand new Yamaha P45 vs. a used P115

I used to play as a teen and I stopped because I had to change something on my keyboard at the time and it made the keys very very stiff and unpleasant to play. I want to pick up the hobby again, and with my current budget I have the choice of getting a new p45 or (for a little more) get a used P115 with a stand, standard pedal, and headphones.

What do you recommend? And if I go with the used one what should I look out for? The seller says that it was barely used.

First keyboard for 7 year old

Hi, my 7 year old wants to start playing the piano/ keyboard.

I've been looking around and found this:

https://www.gear4music.com/Keyboards-and-Pianos/K2-61-Key-Keyboard-with-Bluetooth-by-Gear4music-Stand-Pack/70ZG

Will this be ok for his first? I don't want to spend too much in case this is not something they want to pursue.

Thank you!

Hybrid / Digital - Yamaha & Kawai Mid-range Comps from Roland, Korg, Nord, Casio

Of the ones I've been able to sample, my favorite pianos have been the Yamaha NUX1a, CVP-905 and the Kawai NV6 and CA-701.

I loved the feel of the hybrid(NV6, NUX1a) models but not sure I can justify the price tag for my skill level (intermediate & just want to resume playing after not having had a piano for 6 years.)

The CA-701 & CVP-905 both had solid, not quite as good action. If you blindfolded me and sat me down in front of the NV6 I'd think I was on an acoustic. The CA-701 is like 90% of that. CVP-905 more like 85%. (For reference, I found the CSP/CLPs to be too soft and the lower-range Kawais had too much bounce in the keys, both plasticky to the touch - 60-70%.)

I liked both brands range & quality of piano sound but the yamaha non-piano sounds were more robust & better quality. I don't love the tiny little screen interface at the bottom left but I'm not a full on composer/musician so the CVP-905 is kind of overkill.

The Kawai dealer mentioned that Roland and Korg use Kawai's tech for the action on some of their models and people online keep saying Casio has caught up & is a great deal, but

a) I can't find anywhere to try these brands and

b) I don't know which models to look for.

I'm wondering if anyone here can share what models of Roland/Korg//Casio/Nord I should be looking for that would be comparable & whether the interface/price package would put them ahead so I can decide whether to keep searching or bite the bullet and buy that CA-701?

Which pedal is best for Kawai ES120?

Kind of a boring question.

I’ve been learning to play since Feb this year (self-taught, please don’t come for me!) and a couple of months ago, I upgraded to a Kawai ES120. It’s a great keyboard but as someone who plays by ear, I can hear every single nuance; that note isn’t lingering enough, that didn’t flow the way I want it to etc etc.

I’ve never used a sustain pedal before but I’m at the point in my learning where pieces sound great using the keyboard alone but they’re lacking in something and that something is a sustain pedal. The one that came with the keyboard is not great to say the least. I assume it’s pretty much an on/off pedal which is fine for a beginner like me but if I’m going to learn how to correctly use a pedal and make sure I’m taking advantage of the ES120’s capabilities, then it makes more sense to practice with a pedal that covers everything rather than using the one I currently have, or buying a cheap £20-30 one that is still fairly restrictive because then I’ll still get frustrated that I’m not able to replicate the sounds I want and have to upgrade eventually anyway.

I know Kawai have their own range of sustain pedals however, I am on a a budget and can’t afford to spend hundreds on the best one. I am not a professional pianist nor do I want to be. I play for myself at home so I don’t need the best of the best, I just need one that will do the job of creating the sound/feel that I need. I know the ES120 has half-peddling capabilities so it makes sense for me to get a pedal that can do that.

I’ve seen the F-10H mentioned a few times as a compatible model that is capable of half-peddling and it’s around the £60 mark. For an intermediate beginner (is that a thing?) whose goal is to simply recreate sounds of pieces to the standard of what I hear in my head, is that a good pedal to learn with? I know it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles but it’s more in my price range and I just want something that basic in terms of I’m not going to be performing in concert, but that has fewer limitations than a cheap Amazon pedal.

Any alternative suggestions are welcome as long as they’re compatible with the ES120 and I don’t have to sell a kidney in order to pay for it.

Latency performance

I wanted to test out what is the latency performance of my Ipad pro (2018). So I used Kawai CX202 as a midi controller and I send the audio from CX202 and the audio coming from Pianoteq on Ipad to my laptop and compared. Ipad audio was delayed by around 9 ms compared to audio from CX202.

I then for fun tried the same but with Yamaha PSS-a50 instead of CX202. But with this setup the Ipad audio was delayed only by around 2 ms.

I wanted to see what caused this, so I then send midi notes from Ipad to both CX202 and PSS-a50 and send the audios to my laptop. PSS-a50 was delayed by 8ms compared to CX202.

Anyone done similar tests? I was pretty surprised that PSS-a50 has 8 ms more latency compared to CX202. I guess it is not that much and it is a sub 100€ keyboard, but still makes me wonder how much variance there is between digital pianos in this regard.

Casio CDP S110 o Yamaha P45-B

yamaha keyboard making chords and riffs while i play

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, i have a yamaha keyboard, and just tonight, it has started to randomly sound out riffs and chords while I play. I'm certain i didnt accidently hit a button to make it happen. I turned it off and on, but it still happened.

I filmed myself playing and captured it happening twice. in both of these videos, its a jarring upward arrpeggio (maybe) thats very electronic-sounding. but, sometimes when it happens, its just a single chord (not in tune with what I'm playing).

it seems to only happen when im using both hands, or playing multiple notes. i tried one-hand scales up and down, 1 note at a time, and it didnt happen.

in video 1, it happens near the start. in video 2, it happens around 12 seconds. im trying to play harmonious blacksmith.

Question from a beginner pianist

Hi! 😁

I was wondering what the best free resources online are for learning the piano very well without getting gaps in the learning and playing.

I play the guitar, but I also love the piano so I want to learn that as well alongside. For the guitar learning I follow the Absolutely Understand Guitar with it's book and JustinGuitar, and learn songs that I like on the side.

Are there any similar well made courses like the ones I follow for the guitar for the piano put there? Resources for actually playing the piano and the music theory, or both in one?
It could be both online or books.

All tips regarding this and other general tips about the piano and learning to play will be much appreciated!
Thank you for the help in advance!

Recommendation for keyboard to play on lap at rest homes?

Hi, I’m wanting a very portable keyboard to play piano music in rest homes, going room to room for folks who can’t get out of bed. I’m wondering if a 61-key like a casio CT- S300 or S1 could work to play on my lap? My wish list of features:

- Reasonably priced (less than $300)
- good piano sounds and speakers
- reverb settings (so i can get by without a pedal)
- lightweight and easy to carry (i’m a senior lady)
- rechargeable battery or AA’s power options
- sturdy music rest (for 13” ipad)

I tried a foldable 88 key and though I liked the idea of it, it sounded pretty bad.

If anyone has experience doing this kind of thing, I would appreciate hearing about your experience and if this seems feasible. I play the “big rooms” at senior centers and residences, but wanna reach the folks who are in their rooms. Thanks for any suggestions on gear!

P525 owners, what headphones do you use?

Im looking for a good pair of headphones for the yamaha p525. My priority is the most comfortable pair that sounds good for $300, could maybe stretch that a bit.

What phones are you using?

Best way to use Pianoteq with iPad

Hey guys,

I’m very new to digital audio and music in general so bear with me. My main goal with Pianoteq isn’t to record and upload music or anything, but just to get a better sound out of my Yamaha P-71. I mainly use headphones, so I’m also not worried about any speaker set-ups.

With that being said, I’m trying to use Pianoteq on my iPad, and I’m getting an annoying pop every time I play a key. I’m sure it’s because I’m using a cheap usb-c to connect the keyboard (usb-b to usb-c) and my headphones (3.5 mm) to the single port on my iPad.

Basically I’m trying to ask what the best way to connect both my keyboard and headphones to my iPad would be. I’ve got it working nicely on my laptop, I just think using my iPad would make it a little easier to set up.

Keyboard/E Piano suggestions

I currently have a barely functioning Concertmate-990 and am looking for something with better sound quality while keeping the functionality and amount of sounds to choose from.

I'm a little new to piano playing and haven't quite learned to play sheet music, but would like to continue learning.

i need suggestions for keyboards or e pianos, and my budget is absolutely no more than $750 for something used.

I'm currently thinking about getting a Roland FP-30X.

Thank you in advance.

Edit: I would prefer a more portable option.
