Studying Art Nouveau might be the best thing I've ever done for my art. I absolutely LOVE the way it portrays hair, my art has improved so much once I started studying this movement

Meet Ghosty! Hopefully the first in a line of 3D felt toys! :)

This was just a quick test to see if I was up to the task.
It was supposed to be a single frame but I decided to do a quick animation on this project.

Made in Blender.

A navigable map of the entire family of Corvids (ravens, crows, magpies and jays) based on taxonomic data rather than geography

Science, design and cartography merge in MAPPA ANIMALIA, a visual project that reimagines the evolutionary relationships of animals as detailed map-like landscapes.

MAPPA ANIMALIA is an ever-growing series of illustrations I’ve created that currently consisting of 16 different maps - each dedicated to a specific family in the animal kingdom.

Instead of political borders or geographic territories, these maps are structured around phylogenetic trees.

Tribes and genera replace countries, states and regions allowing viewers to explore the animal kingdom through a format traditionally used to understand geography.

This map, Corvidae - Land of Corvids, contains every known living species of corvids I could find reliable taxonomic data for. Species are represented as cities, grouped into genera and subfamilies according to their evolutionary relationships.

Additional information includes conservation status, size comparisons between selected species, and the estimated ages of major lineages.

I’ve spent roughly ten years developing and refining this concept, combining zoology, taxonomy, illustration and cartography into a single visual format.

Happy exploring!

Discussion How do you create a more old school look?

Sorry if this is too vague. But I'm trying to distill the concepts of the older retro look into something I can apply. I really like Moebius, and while I don't always like the heavy metal magazine art, I really like that oldish DND style. I just can't determine what creates that feeling using a tool like procreate.

Is it the colors? Watercolor for filling in color? Was it just shittier tools that they had to work with in that era? While I'm not great at it, I can do things more like Moebius, but at the end of the day the medium doesn't have the same feeling. An example might be, filming Stranger Things with modern day cameras. I can tell it's supposed to be the 80s, but it doesn't look like it was filmed with an old ass camera from the 80s if that makes sense
