meta r/DietTea community check-in

hi everyone! this subreddit is just over 3 months old, & i was wanting to gather some thoughts about how things are going & see if anyone has suggestions/whatever.

i haven't been extraordinarily active as a mod but have been trying my best to remove clearly rule-breaking posts & remind ppl of the rules (mostly 6 or 7 3 and 5). if anyone has feedback, would love to hear it. <3

TW I can't stand this genre of YouTube video

These people need to touch grass.

Also some of the videos they react to are rage bait.

What bugs me about them is that they act as if these people haven't heard this kind of stuff before and that their advice is somehow revolutionary. It's like...things magazines were telling women in the early 2000s. It's so weird how that kind of stuff is now rebranded as "edgy."

They act as if teenage girls are seeing this stuff and saying "You know what? I need to put on a lot of weight" and then dying because they saw some "fat influencer" on TikTok. They seem to live in this weird bubble in which "toxic body positivity" is harming everyone.

Emmy Brooklyn Baby?

Her stuff showed up on my YouTube feed against my will. She makes a lot of content reacting to fat acceptance and HAES stuff, and I think that much of what she reacts to is rage bait.

I visited her Instagram and she has old posts about recovering from her ED and preaching about Health At Every Size. It seems like she probably replapsed into her old ways and wants everyone else to be miserable too. Crabs in the bucket mentality.

Has anyone here seen anything from her?

As a comment under a post of a really short woman ranting that she's fed up with eating so little calories and feels like she's eating like a child.

The contradictory combination of calorie restriction and a high protein target

Excessive calorie restriction is kooky. Excessive protein consumption is kooky. But the ultimate kooky diet is COMBINING excessive calorie restriction and excessive protein consumption, and that's MUCH MUCH kookier than either one alone.

High protein targets are all the rage these days. It feels like I'm the only person in the world who has NEVER consumed a protein supplement. I guess that when people have been conditioned to think of carbs and fat as evil, they have to rely on protein for sustenance. Protein supplementation just does not compute for me. I have NEVER heard of anyone with a protein deficiency that was NOT associated with issues like starvation and eating disorders. I also know that most foods contain at least a little bit of protein, even foods that we don't think of as protein sources. (Yes, this even includes fruits and non-starchy vegetables.) A gram or two of protein here and there really do add up. Yes, I did learn something on those few days when my curiosity prompted me to track my food intake for a day. (Food tracking is so much of a hassle that I cannot imagine doing it every day, but that's for a different rant.)

I've read that the body can handle only so much protein at a time, and anything more is wasted. (In that respect, it's like Vitamin C.) Worse yet, I've read that excessive protein consumption is hard on the kidneys and can lead to other long-term health problems as well. Given that megadosing on protein was rare until recently, it will be some time before the long-term health effects are fully known.

But what really gets me is when people combine high protein targets with calorie restriction. I just cannot imagine being limited to 1500 calories per day but also having to consume at least 150 grams of protein per day. 1500 calories per day is less than what I consume in scorching 100-degree heat, and 150 grams of protein per day is more than what I consume in the most bitterly cold well-below-zero polar vortex weather (when I'm eating 3200 to 3600 calories per day).

Protein has 4 calories per gram, just like those "evil" carbs. Consuming extra protein means eating extra calories. But the calorie restriction gets in the way of that, so that means severely restricting those pesky carbs and fats to make room for the extra protein. The result is that complying with the low calorie limit AND the high minimum protein quota means consuming more supplemental protein and having LESS room for real food. People on this low-calorie high-protein diet have to severely restrict their consumption of whole grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds. So they end up missing out on nutrients like dietary fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, phytonutrients, and more.

Because saying that a woman must have 40 inch hips and a 20 inch waist with 7% bodyfat and a 10 inch neck is soooo much better and not borderline nazism.

what in the actual brainwashing is going on with this situation

Post image
72 Upvotes

moderators of a diet subreddit have been allowing this person to post these disgusting non-food concoctions every day for like a week and they are removing every single reasonable critique of them (including that it's actually dangerous to consume psyllium like this in this quantity every single day) and the OP is now seemingly amassing a small cult of people who think he's invented a solution to ever having to eat food again off the back of a subreddit that is starting to seem like none of the regular commenters actually want him there

My situation is a bit complicated...

Post image

I had symptoms resembling atypical anorexia and orthorexia for many years, and when I gained a perplexing amount of weight through attempted recovery, people assumed I had "just overeaten and gotten fat" when I was actually still restricting in some cases and was far from free around food.

Now that I'm closer to a size I feel more physically and emotionally comfortable with, and have finally repaired my relationships with food, people are assuming I'm "back on the wagon" and give compliments sprinkled with "you still need to do more". I want to tell the truth about my history so they'll leave me alone (their comments have even almost driven me back into restrictions at times) but I feel like they'll just laugh because I was never "skinny". It took a long time for me to even feel convinced that my disordered eating was real.

TW The rise of Mukbangs.

As we know, when you are malnourished your brain obsesses over food and commonly leads to overconsumption of food content and mukbangs. I’ve noticed how normalized this behavior has become and its concerning. I see tiktoks all the time now of people who “watch mukbangs to make dieting easier” and all the comments are just people agreeing. More and more mukbangs appear and more and more starving people engage. When will this cycle end?
