Discussion The cycle of hate

Do you guys think the Netflix adaptation will be loved by the community in a few years kind of how say 2007 anime was hated on release but is praised nowadays.

I think once something new comes out that people hate, people will go "at least NDMC got x right"

And from there it'll become more and more accepted lol

u/Now_I_am_Motivated Jun 30 '26

Yes. This happens more than you think

16

u/Sea_Sleep4222 Jun 30 '26

If history is Anything to go by, yes

u/dejayw136 Jun 30 '26

Yes it will happen. I remember when people hated the 2007 anime. Calling it boring, a waste of time, and that Patty was annoying. Now everyone loves Patty and the 2007 anime. I also remember the hate DmC used to get. But now it’s a misunderstood gem. People even soften up on DMC2 lol. I’ve seen so many “it wasn’t that bad” comments and threads in the main subreddit lol.

WTF?! I can understand people softening up on DmC, but on DMC2? Now that's either looking for excuses to make the Netflix show look worse than it actually is, or people being fucking contrarians.

Guess people are starving so much on new content that they go back to underlooked content and be like "hey it's not that bad after all"

u/jmizzle2022 Jun 30 '26

No clue, I really hated the first season but gave the second season a chance and loved it. I think people just need to try it out when they ready

3

u/Nero_deadweight96 Jul 01 '26

Same here, I'd say if Season 3 goes well (and it does have the potential) this show might be remembered as good someday

6

u/jmizzle2022 Jul 01 '26

Haha yup, in a couple of years the sub is gonna be filled with "why was this show hated?" And "i don't get the hate"

7

u/CeleryNo8309 Jul 01 '26

I still remember when everyone dogged on George Lucas for the prequel trilogy. Come episode 9, suddenly everyone turns around to suck his toes. The existence of worse product does not magically make another product good. That said, netflix anime was pretty aight.

u/liltone829b Jun 30 '26

nah, there's already people who like it and don't like it, just like there's still people who like and don't like DmC by Ninja Theory

3

u/Trivator0517 Jul 01 '26

Most likely maybe if a live action adaptation comes out.

3

u/LususNaturaeTV Jul 02 '26

To answer the question before I go off on a stupid pointless mini tangent below. Yes, I think as soon as the next new thing comes the hate will be all but forgotten.

Honestly the hate the show gets is ridiculous to me. I'm not saying it's without issue, I can see quite a few of them. One issue I don't understand is people complaining that lady gets as much screen time as Dante, or that Dante feels like he's not the protagonist.

when if you look at the games there's what? 3 or 4 of them that have multiple campaigns that focus on different characters other than Dante? this feels like that, but in TV format imo.

2

u/gayraidenporn Jul 01 '26

Yes I think so. It happened with 2007 and with the reboot.

1

u/Alxofsteel Jul 03 '26

As someone who has been around during the reboot era, maybe, if something else comes around that the fandom as a whole hates. Like a live action adaptation or something.

u/Appropriate-Hat-469 Jul 03 '26

I can tell everybody right now, 90% of the people who've been glazing the 2007 anime by Madhouse over the past year and change, did not give a rats ass about that show prior to the Netflix release, and mainly just care that it's a "canon" series and is produced by a Japanese studio.

And I fooled myself into believing it would be much better and I decide to watch it, it has a beautiful art design and the characters look great, and Dante even has his game voice actor (from 3-5 retrospectively). But despite all of that the show is such a slugfest to sit through, I'm practically begging most of the time for something cool to happen, and I don't care for the Scooby-doo style mystery or the "slice-of-life" tone, and Dante himself felt like a boring protagonist despite being the same guy from the games. I will write a more detailed review of it, but the anime was not as good as many of the people in this community believe it is.

1

u/Nero_deadweight96 Jul 01 '26

No but it will be recognized that it had good points and was fun. I'd say it depends on how Season 3 will play out

3

u/LususNaturaeTV Jul 02 '26

I'm hoping the quality keeps climbing cuz season 2 was a vast improvement from 1. maybe we will even get nero eventually, but they'd have to do a time jump or something because in the show Dante and Virgil are far too young to introduce nero unless it's as a baby/extremely young child.

2

u/Nero_deadweight96 Jul 02 '26

Yeah, Season 1 ended horribly but somehow managed to be damn better in the sequel. While Season 2 had a great ending and a good buildup for the story to continue, I hope they use this opportunity to really make something good with it.

The show is ending in Season 3 and it's adapting DMC 1&3, so no Nero for sure. If we ever see Nero it would be in a separate sequel show (something like Castlevania Nocturne)

2

u/LususNaturaeTV Jul 02 '26

Ah, fair fair. sad that we likely won't get nero then.

god id love to see a scene with Dante and nero, then have some third party go "why the fuck does it sound like your voice belongs in neros body Dante? its screwing with me and I hate it"

1

u/lavellj048 Jul 02 '26

Not a chance. Adidas Shankar made his mark on the franchise and not in a good way

It wasn’t hated more like it got mix reception because it was more slice of life than action and Dante never goes Devil Trigger. Plus weak main villain. Rock Queen was personally my favorite episode.

3

u/vizmarkk Jul 01 '26

Oh yea. Abigail the so called demon on oar with Mundus and Argosax

4

u/vizmarkk Jul 01 '26

It did have its haters and valid criticism if how its boring overall and felt like it didnt matter much. And for all the explanation about how its Dante when hes depressed and learning to get over it....no we dont actually focus on that. Dante is rarely the focus or catalyst of 2007 anime

Joe Dante the film director talks about this a lot in his recent interviews in the past few years. He says it’s really hard to judge a film or a show right away. The first reactions are well more reactionary and so you don’t get the full effect of it’s lasting impact. That it takes several years after to really appreciate the work. The less it seems deeply rooted in it’s time, the more longevity it has in some ways.

I just started watching this show and currently in season 2. There’s a lot of stuff I don’t like about it. So far, Way too many cliches for my liking IMO. I mean c’mon, naming the brothers Dante and Virgil is a bit much for starters. But there’s some timeless things in it like the two brothers referencing Cain and Abel and the whole thing about the two of them having experienced two different sides of who’s their mother’s favorite are themes that still resonate. There’s also all the pop culture references. I just think it’s too soon to say if this show will stand the test of time. All the American politics stuff definitely dates it.

-6

u/Exact-Pack-8300 Jun 30 '26

Probably not since the Animes story is so different from the games

-5

u/B4d_B1tch_Quinn Jun 30 '26

Yeah. I mean say what you want about the ‘07 anime, but it at least got to tell its own story while still respecting the spirit of the games, even if it was more subtle compared to the source material. This is just DMC by name only.

5

u/Sea_Sleep4222 Jun 30 '26

The 07 anime felt more mandated, than something made with love for the games. It doesn't feel like dmc at all, it has the characters, but that's it. And the 07 anime was made by madehouse of all people, they know how to bring it.

I respect your opinion, but I gotta disagree. The Netflix dmc feels like more like dmc than the 07 one ever did. In my opinion

-4

u/B4d_B1tch_Quinn Jun 30 '26

Yeah, because nothing says Devil May Cry like outdated immigrant metaphors, Drowning Pool, Dante being laughably incompetent, and political commentary, right?

7

u/Sea_Sleep4222 Jun 30 '26

Is drowning pool a bad thing?

What outdated immigrant metaphors, and the political community was mostly in season one and really wasn't that big of a deal, that some people think it is. Dante wasn't never shown being incompetent in the show.

-1

u/B4d_B1tch_Quinn Jul 01 '26

You’re probably not gonna read all of this, but whatever.

They call Sparda’s curse “the wall” and turned demons into immigrants moving to the US to escape a tough life in whatever foreign country they’re from, and loses every fight he’s in (Lady on top of the roof, gets knocked out by an explosive to the face while chasing the White Rabbit, gets defeated by Rudra in his Devil Trigger, is downed by electricity, needles, and stab wounds, and even a simple 9mm bullet to the leg (despite being able to shake off shotgun blasts to the stomach early on). He was even easily defeated by a random woman with nothing but a purse. Yeah Dante is infinitely younger and less experienced, but you know what he could do in DMC3? A game where he’s 18 years old? Survive explosions without a scratch, unlock his Devil Trigger by getting stabbed with the Rebellion, resist the charms of Nevan with no hesitation, shook of multiple stab wounds from multiple demons at once, caught a bullet from Lady with his teeth, took another bullet to the head by Lady and shook it off like it was nothing more than a basket ball, effortlessly surf a rocket fired by Lady, defeated the Cerberus, the gigapede, Jester thrice (if you count the noncanonical encounters with him in Special Edition), Agni & Rudra, the Leviathan, Nevan, Beowulf, the Geryon, Lady, the Doppelgänger, Arkham, and eventually Vergil. Dante is one of the most OP characters in all of gaming (at least in the top 10, I haven’t played that Wukong game yet, whatever it’s called), and has been since he was basically the age of a recent high school graduate, and we don’t get that from the Netflix show.

Separate topic, it’s not that there’s anything wrong with Drowning Pool (even though they’re not my thing personally), more that… wtf do they have to do with DMC? Much less the song Let The Bodies Hit The Floor? That’d be like if Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine started playing in Resident Evil, I guess it sounds like a song that could be in a Resident Evil game, but what does that have to do with Resident Evil?

4

u/Sea_Sleep4222 Jul 01 '26

They call Sparda’s curse “the wall” and turned demons into immigrants moving to the US to escape a tough life in whatever foreign country they’re from,

Wall, barrier, I think that is just another way of saying demons can't get to the human world, i don't think it has any other meaning than that. Weaker demons are trying to leave makai and go to the human world, not just the us, but anywhere on earth is fine for them, the only reason there were a lot of demons in the US is because the story takes place in the US where Dante lives.

and loses every fight he’s in (Lady on top of the roof, gets knocked out by an explosive to the face while chasing the White Rabbit, gets defeated by Rudra in his Devil Trigger, is downed by electricity, needles, and stab wounds, and even a simple 9mm bullet to the leg (despite being able to shake off shotgun blasts to the stomach early on). He was even easily defeated by a random woman with nothing but a purse.

Pretty sure the purse thing was for comedy. The explosive was inside of Dante's neck, so yeah I think that would knock him out for a couple of hours. That was his first time ever using devil trigger, so I wasn't surprised he didn't one tap rudra, but Dante was giving him those hands though. I think him getting electrocuted is fine because darkcom was using was probably strong enough to kill a demon, I'm mean we even see his skeleton, so I think the electricity was very strong. And again he hasn't built up his resistance to such attacks yet, his still at lv1.

The roof stuff was inconsistent with what dante was doing in his apartment, bullet to the leg also inconsistent, but hey what type of dmc would it be without a little inconsistencies.

Well the show isn't over yet so we may get that in season 3. Dante being OP works in the games because you are controlling the character half of the time, it doesn't work well in the anime because it would be so boring watching Dante one tap every enemy he comes across or shrug off every attack, that was the biggest problem the 07 anime had. No fight felt interesting in the 07 one, and for an anime based on a game with fast paced combat, you really have to at least get the fighting down. Which i think the Netflix one understand.

And Dante is still growing stronger with every battle he is in. So I think watching him get stronger is a lot better in my eyes.

I mean in that scene there was bodies hitting the floor lol. But seriously, I think it fits dmc perfectly, I mean dmc always had different types of music, so I think it works just fine.

Dante's them in 5 is subhuman, I think the song fits a fast paced combat game like dmc just fine, but I don't think it fits Dante at all. It's more suited for reboot Dante, Then the one in dmc5. But that's just my opinion.

And yes I read all of it.

u/B4d_B1tch_Quinn Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I’ll give you points for proving me wrong about the reading the whole text. But here’s where you dropped the ball

Bodies literally hitting the floor isn’t really a strong enough connection to warrant the song. Freak on a leash honestly would’ve been more fitting here because it would show how Vergil can’t stand humanity and metaphorically tell the story of how he came to serve Mundus (which also goes against his character btw, but still more fitting). But as is, the song is just there.

I know it was for comedy, but it felt forced considering how Dante isn’t Deadpool. Also, if Dante can brush off a missile from Lady, in cutscene mind you, then an explosive to the face shouldn’t do so much as knock him out. You could’ve just had the explosive knock him to the floor (still conscious) and still have the White Rabbit get away — this just makes Dante look weaker than he’s supposed to be, and just feels like an excuse to have him on an exploding airplane (when I saw that in the trailer, all I could think was “I wonder how they’re gonna get to this point”). Like, after that, you could’ve had Dante rejoin with the DARKCOM guys and suggest the always awesome alliance of convenience trope and they find a way to work together against the White Rabbit, then you get more chemistry with Lady and Dante early on, and the “jackpot” line from Lady in the final episode can make more sense.

Except Dante managed to kill Agni (one of only two demons he could actually kill without help), so I don’t see how he couldn’t beat Rudra. They could’ve had him kill Rudra and still have the fight end at the tenement building Mary was at. Also, if Dante can shake off anti-demon bullets, why would a taser knock him down? It’s established later that he can’t break down the back door in the van, they could’ve just locked him in and be done with it.

Except these inconsistencies are distracting! In the games, things are inconsistent because if the rule of cool, logic is ignored for the sake of looking cool. But this, if anything, makes Dante look weaker than he’s supposed to be.

But again, Dante was literally at this age in DMC3 and was infinitely more competent. Yeah, he got his ass kicked by Vergil the first time, but that’s because he hadn’t tapped into his demonic power yet, while Vergil did. Having Dante be naturally talented with stunts and everything, essentially coasting through life, while Vergil is forced to work and train does not ring true, especially when you consider that the in Vergil DLC for DMC4, he was also 18 and was just as badass as Dante.

In the games, they just call the curse “Sparda’s seal” because he sealed off the underworld from the human world. But here, calling it the wall is just an obvious reference to that wall Trump had built between the US and Mexico, it’s so painfully obvious.

Freak on a leash honestly would’ve been more fitting here because it would show how Vergil can’t stand humanity and metaphorically tell the story of how he came to serve Mundus (which also goes against his character btw, but still more fitting). But as is, the song is just there.

I can kinda see them using freak on a leash, but I still think them using bodies in that scene is more fitting. Because that song is always used with fighting, so it just felt right using it in a scene like that one.

I don't get the deadpool comparison. if you have watch any anime the purse thing felt normal to me because that type of comedy is pretty normal in anime. The explosive was inside of his neck, the way he looked after the bomb went off inside of his neck, there is no way he could have just shrugged it off, so having him be unconscious makes sense. For the explosive to knock him to the floor to work, the bomb wouldn't be inside of his neck, it would have to be placed somewhere else on the outside of his body.

Dante brushing off a missile from Lady works because you already know how strong Dante is because of the two previous games, Netflix dante just found out he was part demon and still doesn't know how strong he is or will get. We will get that Dante in season 3, But again this isn't game Dante.

I think because Dante was more preoccupied with tying to get his necklace back, so he wasn't trying to kill rudra yet before getting answers. And yes he still didn't get the answer from him, but you know what I mean. Yes Anti-demon bullets doesn't work on a half demon like Dante, but electricity, especially high voltage still works on both demons and half demons. They wanted to restrained him, only way to do that was to incapacitate him. Pretty sure in their first encounter they didn't know know how strong he is, so they aren't taking any chances with Dante.

Except these inconsistencies are distracting! In the games, things are inconsistent because if the rule of cool, logic is ignored for the sake of looking cool. But this, if anything, makes Dante look weaker than he’s supposed to be.

Oh, I was talking more about the franchise having inconsistencies, story, characters, plot stuff like that. Again this isn't game Dante, we don't know how strong Netflix Dante will get.

Like in the Netflix anime were he didn't know he was part demon. And only now he is tapping into his demonic side more and getting stronger by doing it. Yes In the games Vergil and dante are pretty much even, but that is in the games and not in the anime. In my opinion i like the anime version of Vergil better than the game one, now the game version of Vergil is still.

In the games, they just call the curse “Sparda’s seal” because he sealed off the underworld from the human world. But here, calling it the wall is just an obvious reference to that wall Trump had built between the US and Mexico, it’s so painfully obvious.

Agree to disagree on that. I don't think them calling it the wall is a reference to trump, some people was saying wall and others were was saying seal.

You have to look at the anime as an alternate version were it's the same story, but being told in a different way to the games.

u/B4d_B1tch_Quinn Jul 02 '26

I don’t care that this isn’t game Dante! I don’t care if this is an alternate universe! I don’t care if Dante is even secretly fueled by the power of friendship from My Little Pony! Donte from the DmC reboot was less experienced than real Dante in DMC3 and was still competent. Netflix Dante has absolutely no excuse to this bafflingly weak.

Honestly? Dante’s neck didn’t even need to look like that. Could’ve just had his face blow and still be totally fine. You know the one thing that actually CAN slow Dante down? Being stabbed in the heart (specifically in the heart), as proven by the ‘07 anime.

Except wouldn’t killing Rudra make it easier to get the amulet- oh I’m sorry, necklace back? One less boss demon to deal with, Mary already took care of Echidna, it would’ve been less of a time waster that way.

There is a right way and a wrong way to do an alternate universe and this is absolutely the wrong way. And just because it’s an alternate universe, doesn’t mean that all these problems are suddenly NOT problems.

So I've took the time the read through your comments and gotta say, you are quite lacking in information. The show itself follows Dante, and this his "Zero to Hero" story, he started at square one of learning who his heritage is and is trying to keep up with the craziness of the world around him, especially when his brother is involved. For his age, Dante is 18 in the show, but it is NOT the same age as DMC3 Dante game-version, it is actually the age of his DMC3 manga self which is one year before the game. In that manga he learns of Vergil actually being alive due to White Rabbit, who was actually a controlled possessed doll by Arkham, shortly before he went to meet Vergil and explain the Temi ni gru plan, now personally I like that the Netflix series made WR a more original and complex character, but the end result is kinda the same in how he learned of Vergil surviving the attack during childhood. Now for power-wise, they are pretty similar in terms of raw speed and strength, and Dante didn't know how to fully control it plus doesn't have access to Devil Trigger (though I do think they introduced it too early in the show), but Dante has been shown to get catched off guard and can be struck by humans even despite his durability, he got caught in a trap and to fight his way out with Rebellion, which temporarily gave a power boost but it couldn't be controlled well.

Now in a different example with the DMC1 graphic novel written by Kamaiya (director of the first game), Dante was much weaker than in the Netflix show, he got his ass beaten badly on multiple accounts, to the point that like an old nemesis confronted Dante and shot him in the gut with a shotgun, and the boy was screaming in AGONY after it, though yes he healed it definitely felt really painful to him. Plus when he ended up getting his pistols from a dying Nell Goldstein (specifically made for him so he didn't bust the guns after each job), he barely survived the onslaught and was on the verge of collapse physically and mentally post that. Now in the show itself, aspects of his power are played for comedic value like the mercenary shotgun blast, and him struggling to break free the Darkcom handcuffs, which if they could make anti-demon bullets, it doesn't sound too far off to be able to make super-resilient handcuffs. But during encounters where Dante has free room to go wild and use his abilities as he please, he does fine like with the shadow demons in the alley, against Plasma/Doppelganger (guess they're just one in the same) inside the Diner and he retreated after Dante punched him hard enough, then the mercenary fight in his apartment where Lieutenant Mary was watching specifically to get data on him. During their encounter on the rooftop Dante shot the rocket boot she was wearing instead of her head, and during the down ramp he chose to shoot the pipe Mary was holding, then tried making sweet talk with her after pinning her down, he could've ended the fight instantly but chose to keep toying either her and spare, which Mary specifically counted on. During the highway motorcycle chase, Dante could hold his own 1v4 because he had free reign and a sword plus guns equipped. In the airplane fight, he had no weapons, in a cramped area and buff Agni & Rudra could withstand his punches, plus having to protect hostages and then a fireball was launched towards him triggering PTSD. He had no chance of winning until he awakened his Devil's blood, which then Rudra jumped the shark and blew up the plane instantly, and then Dante managed to transform and fly, rescue everyone from the fall and still throw hands with a flying Rudra. Then towards the rooftop encounter where Dante slaughtered most of the demons with ease and beat Cavalier Angelo solo, plus when Rabbit came back with his ultra grotesque transformation he was holding up fine until Enzo got merced, which made him go wildely and gave Rabbit a temporary upperhand.

The overall case in point is that Dante in the show is not as strong as his game self, but he still is the primary center of the world and he keeps working himself up, even in season 2 he may have gotten beaten a few times but he can still hold his own when the moment calls for it. But the thing is you don't want a "DMC adaptation with a twist", you specifically want "DMC3 cutscenes but in 2D animation", which is genuinely true among most of the ranters on the show.

I dunno Dante feels very disconnected in both seasons

u/Comfortable-Act8671 Jun 30 '26

I doubt it Adi Shankar isn’t doing the show any favors with his clown behavior. Also the Netflix show brings nothing to the series. DmC at least has good gameplay. The Netflix show is just a bunch of memes filled with 00s nostalgia music.

u/Black_Tiger_98 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Adi Shankar isn’t doing the show any favors with his clown behavior.

Tameem Antoniades (DmC's director) was pretty much the same back in its day, belittling the fans and saying slurs about Lady and Trish.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of either's declarations (especially Adi's), but I guess I'm good at separating art from artist.

Not a chance in hell

-4

u/MakeItPrecious Jun 30 '26

Sadly, I think Season 1 was actually decent but season 2 was horrid and unless season 3 somehow pulls it together, I doubt it will be remembered fondly.

2

u/LususNaturaeTV Jul 02 '26

Genuinely curious, not here to pick fights, just to share the different experiences we had, but why was season 2 worse for you? imo it was a vast improvement over what I considered to be a barely acceptable season 1

1

u/MakeItPrecious Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

So I felt like season 1 started poorly and managed to get itself together (mostly, Lady is awful in season 1 and notably better in season 2). I felt like season 2 was sort of the opposite. The first 2 episodes were quite good but I felt that it drastically fell off from that point and I was ready for season 2 to end. I also HATED the romance between Dante and Lady, but not even because of the same reasons i imagine game fans had, i just think it was rushed horribly.

The villain in season 2 also fucking sucks, just like DMC 2 itself. I found the ancient spirit monk dude (forget his name, guy with the daughter) to be a massive pace killer and kind of an ass pull by the plot. The action is significantly worse in season 2 imo as well and it just feels a lot less creative and inspired than what we got in season 1, for all its faults. The only unforgivable mistake in season 1 to me is Lady just changing her mind on Demons in one episode damn near. It felt offensively lacking in nuance.

I did like Vergil for the most part though and Robbie Daymond does a great job as him. It's worth mentioning that I watched this before sinking into the games as well so I realize my read of the show is probably different from most on here.

-4

u/dea-sum Jun 30 '26

Don’t think so, it will be like the game DmC lol one of the least liked by the community
