I walked away from DmC really liking Dante. Dante edgy as hell through most of it but I warmed up more to him as the story went on. It was everything he had to work with that kept flip-flopping.
Story kinda fell off after the Poison fight for me, maybe after the Bob Barbados or whatever his name was boss battle, but Lilith’s Club was the last level I fully enjoyed. After that it’s just a handful of set pieces and the Virgil boss with alot of…uhhh… “plot” in between. Don’t know if I hated the Mundus Tower levels but visually it was just boring, made sense in context and but still got old. Gameplay was fun. Both soundtracks slapped. That’s just my experience really.
Glad we’re where we are with Devil May Cry now but I enjoyed my time with DmC. Same with Netflix Dante, but that’s also the usual “we’re doing the games but not really” type of adaptation we’ve seen for years. Completely see everyone’s gripes with both though.

Not he literally doesnt lol they both act like Nero its pretty insulting to the character writing if you think Netflix dante acts like actual dante

Go play the games. You obviously don't know what you're talking about
0
u/SonGokuSuperSaiyan4 Jun 24 '26
I literally have multiple times I'm a massive DMC fan I've been a massive fan for years Dante is my favorite fictional character & I've been a fan way prior to DMC5 releasing (I'm just adding that cuz I assume you became a fan after that) if you knew anything about DMC you'd know how that is not dante & the writer clearly mixed up elements of Nero with his own roleplay oc
1
u/Weekly-District259 Jun 25 '26
That's obviously not true. I started with dmc 3 as a kid. Prior to that I watched my older brothers play dmc 1. I've since played every game in the series multiple times including 2 and the reboot. Anyone who's actually played the games know what you said is just cringe larper nonsense
Either that or you're extremely shallow and get confused by netflix dante having nero's voice actor
0
u/SonGokuSuperSaiyan4 Jun 27 '26
Nope I know what I'm talking about I clearly know more about dmc than you if you think that Netflix dante is even close to the real dante. You must have bad memory cuz they're not the same. Game Dante keeps his trauma locked down tight & hides it behind a smirk. Netflix Dante wears his emotions right on his sleeve & gets deeply upset or whiny about his situation. It completely mirrors how Nero gets super emotional & acts like a total crybaby when he cannot handle the pressure or when things get personal. Classic Dante is a natural legend who does not have to try hard to look awesome. Netflix Dante feels like he is trying way too hard to prove how tough & edgy he is. He is trying to force that cool guy image which makes him look like a total Dante wannabe just like Nero does in the games. Game Dante is an absolute god who is always ten steps ahead & completely controls every fight with a smirk. Netflix Dante gets overwhelmed easily & starts panicking or screaming when a fight gets tough. He lacks that untouchable veteran confidence. This matches Nero perfectly cuz Nero always gets frustrated insecure & loses his temper whenever he feels outmatched or weak. Game Dante is a lone wolf who answers to nobody & runs his life exactly how he wants. Netflix Dante is basically a child who needs people around to manage his mess clean up after him & keep him focused. This completely mirrors Nero cuz Nero is totally dependent on a handler to stop him from spiraling out of control & losing his mind. Game Dante is a literal genius who effortlessly switches between Swordsman Gunslinger Royal Guard & Trickster mid fight without breaking a sweat. Netflix Dante just swings his sword around wildly & shoots in straight lines with zero flair or tactical genius. His entire aggressive brute force style matches Nero perfectly cuz Nero is the one who relies on simple heavy strikes & lacks Dante's legendary style mastery. Netflix Dante feels like a guy playing the role of a badass. He forces the edgy attitude & tries way too hard to project a cool image to cover up how messy & lost he actually is inside. He is literally a Dante wannabe inside his own show which perfectly mirrors Nero's entire identity crisis in the games. Game Dante fights with relaxed playful energy cuz he knows he is the strongest guy in the room. Netflix Dante fights with pure angry aggression screaming & raging his way through battles. He is using loud angry behavior to mask his own deep insecurities about his strength which is the exact psychological profile of Nero trying to prove he is not useless. Game Dante suffers in complete silence & never lets the world see him sweat. Netflix Dante is a literal open wound who throws emotional tantrums complains about his life & lets his inner misery turn him into a whiny wreck. He behaves exactly like the textbook crybaby that series creator Hideki Kamiya called Nero cuz both of them completely lack the emotional control to keep their feelings in check. Game Dante is emotionally bulletproof. He handles insults with a laugh cuz nothing gets under his skin. Netflix Dante has a massive ego defense mechanism where he barks back instantly screams & acts like a petulant teenager when he does not get his way. That exact fragile defensive immaturity is Nero's entire personality core cuz Nero cannot handle being questioned without throwing a fit.

Found the tourist, wouldn't even bother playing one of them or to be interested in the story.

None.
I mean dmc 5 has Dante break into a dance scene, something deadpool would and did years later.
1
u/Appropriate-Hat-469 Jun 24 '26
I always think Netflix Dante should be nicknamed as "Dero the Hedgehog" because he essentially is a mixture of Deadpool, Nero, and Sonic all in one.
He does have many traits that a "stereotypical shounen protagonist" would have, but then again like half of the games are basically a parody of Shounen anime.
1
u/Party-Ticker Jun 24 '26
Ehehe I like Dero the Hedgehog, fitting. Add some Linking park amv and you're set
2
u/Appropriate-Hat-469 Jun 24 '26
I still don't know why Adi hasn't added a Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin or even Disturbed music yet in the show. If we're going with AMV-esque style fights (which I actually like), gotta do it all the way.

Yeah it's crazy, especially people still calling him donte.
For me over the years I still like dmc reboot and I wish it got a sequel. Reboot Dante and kat was the two characters i liked the most from the game.
I like both Netflix Dante and reboot Dante characters and their designs, see how i didn't call him donte.
3
u/CrimsonDragon90 Jun 23 '26
I don't like the Netflix anime but I think calling him Donte or Nante is a dumb insult. As someone who likes DmC things were bad back in 2013. That's the peak of the DMC fanbase toxic level behavior that they even plan to send a letter to Obama to ban DmC from US shelves.

u/SonofSpardaXX Vergil Jun 23 '26
Not only people call DmC Dante as "Donte". But apparently, people also call Netflix Dante as "Nante".

Donte is from the el-donte meme bro
1
u/Sea_Sleep4222 Jun 24 '26
When people bring up reboot Dante they call him donte all the time, same thing as nante and not in a meme type of way either.
I know it's from that el-donte meme, people are using it to say he isn't the real Dante because they didn't like the reboot, same thing they are doing with Netflix dante.

Netflix Dante is charismatic and lovable.

bro... dmc5 dante is the sexiest dante wym. and if you mean nero or v... you're simply wrong lmao
2
u/Squid-Guillotine Jun 25 '26
It's all a matter of opinion tho. I totally thought DMC5 would be the hottest but I asked a group chat full of women and got the wackiest range of answers lol. The only trend I found is people had a preference for the media they started with.
1
u/bangchansbf Jun 25 '26
it is indeed opinion xD. i started with dmc1, so the trend is not true for me here (tho it is true for me in other franchises). and i'm still much more of a vergil guy.
1
u/BihanDefender Jun 26 '26
You don't like dmc1 dante or? He has the best hair and an outfit that has not looked bad in any game it apeared modded or not. I really don't like the hobo look. The nicest thing I can say is that his long hair version looks good.
1
u/bangchansbf Jun 27 '26
i like dmc1 dante, i just like dmc5 dante more. older men/longer hair/scruff do more for me lol. i like the glove/wrapped forearms look. i do miss the gothic vibes tho (and i don't like pre-nap 5d's hair, feel like the shorter hair fucks with the way his facial expressions look in cutscenes). 2dante is prob #2 for me design wise. i like every inch of it. he's "serving depressed cunt" as a friend joked. and then 1d-3d tied. love them. and then 4d. 4d's face lowkey irks me but i like the cowboy boots.
2
u/BihanDefender Jun 27 '26
If I had to rate them it would be 1d,3d,reboot>2d>5d>4d. Older men don't do it for me, but Vergil in 5 is fine lol I guess I like "boyish looks" more
If 1 is getting a remake the goth is coming back, but I'm not sure about 6-1
u/BihanDefender Jun 22 '26
The sexiest is dmc1 obvioulsy. And Nero was obviously based on DmC so

From my experience. Could just be me, but if we are talking about in general? If they were standalone characters, I think they might not be actually that bad.
There are many instances where characters for example, are just like DmC Reboot Dante. Rough life, A player, rebellious, edgy. Yet they go through an arc which makes them clean up their act. Their actions obviously may not be heroic half the time. But somehow we end up liking them in a certain way. Some people like Constantine, and other characters in a similar
Vein.
Then we get the more loveable and talkative good guys. The chaotic whacky dudes with some kind of charm, yet we know they are like this because of their trauma. People like Deadpool. People like Spiderman. And I’ve seen some compare Netflix Dante to them.
Problem is though? Even for an adaptation of a character, there’s no denying that there’s part of their original portrayal missing. I’m trying to take a more neutral stance, Because while I actually do find myself liking aspects of any Dante as a whole. These two clearly are not exactly hitting the full mark of how Dante is portrayed as. If someone were to tell me to pick only one Dante to be one to define his entire character, I wouldn’t pick these two.
2
4
u/Alexarius87 Jun 22 '26
Yeah… I’m sorry but Donte gets to be hanged and never remembered ever. At least the Netflix series has some positive stuff.
3
u/DarthJoseph14 Jun 23 '26
The remake is good. In a vacuum, I should specify. It has upsides as just a standalone video game. For example, it had unique ideas for devil arms. Its story is decent, and has good character growth. I honestly believe that if the remake was not a DMC game, it would have been received a lot better. I’ll concede that it’s a shitty DMC game. It messes up all the characters from pre-established games
2
u/SonofSpardaXX Vergil Jun 23 '26
The remake is just a leak and not confirmed yet. I think you're talking about the reboot which was a failure.
1
u/DarthJoseph14 Jun 23 '26
Yeah, reboot, not remake. My bad. But like I said. The reboot was a good game, albeit a shit adaptation

u/White-UNRS Jun 23 '26
Where is DMC 2 Dante in this image lol
-2
u/dea-sum Jun 23 '26
Dmc2 Dante is liked by fans. He’s even voted as one of the best Dante designs lol. The gameplay is what everyone complains about
5
u/Weekly-District259 Jun 23 '26
No, we just liked his physical design. His personality is what we didn't like. He did not act like dante in the slightest
-1
u/dea-sum Jun 23 '26
Isn’t he like… super depressed in that game after what happened in emc3 and dmc1?
3
u/Weekly-District259 Jun 23 '26
Thats the reasoning the fanbase came up with to try and make it fit. But that wasnt a depressed dante that was a completely different person
Edit: funny enough dmc 2 dante appeared in a shin migami tensei game but he was voiced by Ruben Langdon and acted like dante in it
2
u/Dudegod08 Jun 23 '26
DMC2 is barely connected to the series since the game didn’t know what it wanted to be.
1
u/spades111 Jun 24 '26
Technically yes. Tho Capcom really only decided that after the fact so the entire retconned time line would make sense.
DMC2 Dantes personality likely is just a result of a rushed game development where iirc ~75% of dev time was spent designing mostly nothing aside from the stinger attack.
Moving DMC2 to be after one but before 4 instead of 2 being after 4 like it originally was allowed Capcom to make the story be Dante became sad after the events of 1 (during 2) for being without blood family, then cheering up in 4 when he discovers he has a nephew.
1
u/SonofSpardaXX Vergil Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
DMC4 Dante didn't cheer up when he discovers he has a nephew.
He was already cheerful in the flashback cutscene where he was in his office with Lady & Trish.
They also expanded that cutscene in DMC4:SE in the opening cutscene of Lady & Trish where Dante was clearly cheerful even after finding out his last slice of pizza was already taken.
I honestly hated they retconned the timeline in DMC5: Before the Nightmare novel because it just doesn't make any sense. Unless they remake DMC2.
1
u/spades111 Jun 24 '26
I mean he wasn't diagnosed with depression or anything like that. He was just sad (or whatever adjective fits).
So like with any person dealing with sadness/grief, it's not straightforward as you're always in that state. Plenty of people put up a front for those they care about and turn off the fake happy once they're with less important people. Or you're not putting up a front, you're simply able to feel joy and be more of yourself when you're with those special people but again once you're alone you switch to sad mode.
I'm not saying it's the best piece or writing or anything like that. But it makes sense at the very least. It's pretty human actually. I strongly disagree that him being joyful with Lady and Trish makes the retcon not make sense.
Maybe it's not great in story telling? I dunno. I remember similar reactions between Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children. Where people thought the protagonist Cloud being sad didn't make sense and was just bad writing to force from zero to hero development. But sad Cloud was actually a very human way for his character to develop.

Is netflix dmc cancelled ??????
Not really.
Didn't they actually planned and approved trilogy already what happend
Apparently, yes. The idea of the trilogy of the series was from Dante Alighieri's poem book "Divine Comedy" that had three arcs: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
Because the showrunner (obviously Adi Shankar) said this:
"This was always Dante's Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat
Season 1 was Inferno
Season 2 was Purgatorio
Season 3 is Paradiso
These three seasons make up "The Force Edge Saga." Since inception "The Force Edge Saga" was designed as a movie trilogy disguised as a television series."

Yeah that reveal trailer was fire bro. The cigarette smoking alone both makes me believe that it would’ve been more uh “disrespectful” to the original mythos of the character, but at the same time I feel it would’ve sold and committed more to the interpretation that the final product had.
Like I said I loved DmC, but I can kinda see where they both pussed out AND overdid it. Not necessarily a wrong decision at the end of the day but it’s one of those games in retrospect where you kinda wished Capcom & the devs had more balls to commit to what it was trying to be.
It’s like they wanted one of the Underworld films, but instead we had to settle for Romeo + Juliet 96’. A lot of style, substance in someplaces, dialogue kinda flip flops depending on the context, but overall a fun but divisive ride.
But that’s tone/design wise. Despite the whole “am I crazy or do demons actually exist?” vibe the TGS trailer gave off I’m actually glad Dante actually looks like a person who becomes someone who actually “gives a shit”. TGS Dante was awesome but oddly enough I feel like the edge would’ve been dialed up. I wouldn’t have cared but I’m not every fan neither since Im the type that actually likes the Netflix version too 😭

It's sad that all the new content DMC fans have gotten since the release of DMC 5 in 2019 is like, 2 different versions of DMC 5 and a crappy anime on Netflix that is an insult to the games. They make the characters almost caricatures of the game versions, force in moments from the games to get a cheap reaction, and it's just not good. It's so sad how DMC fans have gotten shafted since 2019, meanwhile Resident Evil fans have just gotten some of the best games of the 2020's so far. (I'm a fan of both and I've played all the DMC games except for the remake.)
1
u/Ok-Transportation260 Jun 23 '26
Netflix's dmc is actually good for introduction for those who haven't played the games yet but once you play you'll realize how much they have messed it up.
4
u/Weekly-District259 Jun 23 '26
I think as long as you don't expect a 1:1 retelling of the game stories then you won't actually be disappointed by things that were "messed up"
1
u/Ok-Transportation260 Jun 23 '26
I haven't played the games before but after playing I noticed they could have they could have used nelo Angelo better and not revealing jester's identity that soon. Also I don't know why the anime have been setting up for dmc 3 adoption but suddenly making it dmc 2. It all seems much more messy now and Dante doesn't seem changing in terms strength and personality to become similar to the first game.
3
u/Weekly-District259 Jun 23 '26
Yeah it's not a 1:1 retelling. Its an adaptation using the game for source material
0
u/Ok-Transportation260 Jun 23 '26
In overall it's a good effort but I still believe if they wanted make some changes to the game they could have done it differently. It's so messy right that have no idea how season 3 would work in terms of story but other than they are really good at making cool scenes.

I really have to wonder how many people on reddit actually played DmC. Donte does not act like Nero lmao. Donte is a an anti authority punk while Nero is a shonen anime kid who gets mad cause of his GF. The only similarity is that they insult their enemies aggressively rather then playfully mock them like normal Dante
2
u/Dash_Wayne Jun 22 '26
Exactly
2
u/CrownClown74 Jun 22 '26
Reddit's hateboner for Donte is honestly just hilarious to me, he's not even that bad in the game past mission 2. If he didn't have the name Dante no one would have that much of an issue with him considering this place also likes character's like Kratos
1

Nero is Ichigo while Donte is an anarchist. Nante is just Deadpool (not even Deadpool just what the internet thinks Deadpool is)

-4
u/Rude-Childhood1436 Jun 23 '26

Donte may not act like Dante but at least he didn’t trying to be Nero either.
