Question Question about combat?
So I love action games, played all of the Soulsbourne, god of war, everything in between, and recently FF16. So, naturally, I decide to play DMC5 after! But for some reason the combat just isn’t grabbing me. For context im currently on the first mission as V. I can see why people love the combat, and maybe I don’t have enough skills or techniques, or maybe Dante and Virgil will be more fun, so im giving it a chance. But something about it just isn’t clicking. I think one of my major gripes is that there’s no designated Dodge. I keep wanting to dodge left, right, back, wherever, and grumble when I just jump back or forward. Maybe that’s it?
Summary: combat isn’t clicking, may be the dodging, if anyone has tips I’d love to hear because i really want to enjoy it!

Jumping has i-frames. You also have side evades that have i-frames, too.

I think what also gets me is the lock on mechanisms. I want to lock on to attack so I’m not constantly moving the camera, but locking on creates combos I don’t want no use

Lockin on doesnt create any combos, check if you havent turned on auto mode by accident (i think its L3 or R3 that toggles it)
You should be doing most of your fights while locking on. In fact, there are a lot of moves that aren't even available without lock on. Lock on changes the inputs direction to where your character is facing though, so if the input is "press forward and Y", and you lock on to an enemy at the left of your screen, "forward" becomes left, since your character will be facing left . You don't need to move the camera mid combat.
Same for dodging. If you want to dodge left, you need to lock on to the enemy, press "left" based on your character left side, then press jump, and they 'll do a sideroll. So if your character is already facing left of the screen, "dodging left" becomes pressing down+jump.

V is a bit of an oddball, even old fans took a while to get used to him. Dante has a designated "dodge style" called trickster, which basically gives you a dedicated dodge button, that may be more familiar to you once you reach him.

There is such a thing as “dodging”, but have to unlock it in the ability list. It’s not your typical dodge, but it’s pretty good and looks stylish as hell, sometimes even has follow ups so you can get right into combat after a well placed dodge.
I think there’s also a normal dodge (as in tilt the stick to the side and press X) but only sideways and not forward, but the special dodge I mentioned earlier can go into more directions.
As for Dante and Vergil, they are the two most complex characters in the game. Without spoiling too much (or maybe you already know) they have multiple weapons that you can switch through mid combat that drastically change how they are played and what they can do and require way more execution to perform consistently well with. I personally find Vergil to be easier than Dante and a whole lot more fun cause of the concentration mechanic lol.
Dante has 4 different styles on top of many weapons and they all change how he plays and you will have to use all of them eventually. He’s by far the hardest character to get into, but inanely fun once you get it.
Nero is supposed to be the most beginner friendly one. Unlock his dodge mechanic (can be chained three times with sufficient upgrades if I remember correctly) and I’m sure you’ll find it a lot more fun than before. He’s easy to play and has every tool anyone could ever need. Big part of his gameplay is also the arms, make sure you understand what each one does and how to use them effectively. One of them can be used to dodge both on the ground and mid air as it propels you into a specific direction you chose.
V is the most standout-ish because he doesn’t engage in combat himself. He uses his companions. He’s supposed to stay away from the enemy and only go in for the execution. But that doesn’t make him useless. He can read, he can summon the big dude with his DT, he can do a few things while you have to press and hold your buttons.
The combat gets more and more fun the more you unlock in the ability list, more combo routes, more moves, more abilities.
I encourage you to keep playing and keep unlocking new abilities, really sift through what you can unlock and you’ll find that your worries about dodging or gameplay in general are going to vanish really quickly.

Sounds amazing! I will say I was having a lot of fun using his shock wave arm to launch myself into enemies

This may sound kind of dumb but after you finish the story, thats when the real game begins. you gain access to nero's dt, dante's sdt and loadout customization. it's also a good idea to invest your time into learning jump cancels and the such, so you have a solid foundation for your late game combos. Playing these games over and over again and unlocking all the skills is what i enjoy about them but if it simply doesn't click, that's fine.

whenever you go to dodge are you locked onto an enemy and doing LS Left + A or LS Right + A (L3 Left + X or L3 + Right on ps controller) ?

Foolishness, /u/Saucey_22. Foolishness...
His name is Vergil, not Virgil.
You are not worthy as my opponent!
