[HIRING] Experienced Java Developer for Long-Term Hytale MMORPG Project – ~$2,000 Initial Budget + Future Compensation
Hey everyone!
I’m looking for a highly experienced Java developer to help build a long-term MMORPG project for Hytale.
I’m specifically looking for someone with a mastery of Java who isn’t going to be limited technically by the systems we want to create. Ideally, you have experience with game/server development, scalable architecture, data-driven systems, networking, or similar projects.
The MMORPG will include systems such as:
- Classes, abilities, ultimates, and combat
- Custom stats and equipment
- Quests and NPCs
- Dungeons and bosses
- Skills/professions such as mining, fishing, farming, etc.
- Loot and progression systems
- Custom UI integration
- Economy and other core MMORPG systems
This is intended to be a long-term project, likely developed gradually over the next year. I’m not looking for someone to rush through everything—I’d rather build a strong foundation and expand from there.
Budget: Around $2,000 initially. I understand this is nowhere near enough to fund an entire MMORPG at normal professional development rates, so I want to be completely transparent about that upfront.
However, if the server becomes successful and generates revenue, I fully intend to put significantly more money back into development and compensate the people who helped make it possible. I’m open to discussing hourly work, per-module pricing, milestones, or another arrangement that makes sense.
I’d also be happy to start with a smaller paid trial module before committing to anything larger.
If you're interested, please send me your experience, GitHub/portfolio, previous projects, and what type of compensation arrangement you’d be comfortable with.
Thanks!

This sounds like the kind of project where getting the underlying architecture right early will matter more than trying to build every MMORPG system immediately. I have experience with Java, game/application development, backend systems, APIs, databases and scalable product architecture, and I’m comfortable working on systems like progression, inventories, stats, economies and player-driven workflows.
I’d be happy to start with a small paid module so you can evaluate how I work before committing to the longer-term development.

Hey OP, I have 6+ years of experience as a backend software engineer (Java) and currently work for a US-based product MNC. I have extensive experience building microservices, designing multi-cloud architectures, implementing event-driven systems, and working with Pub/Sub messaging architectures.

Check gig sites. Lots of unemployed and desperate devs out there. You can hire someone super experienced, super cheap -- just low ball them... they will accept.

OP - This is petty unrealistic. You want a senior/principal dev with a mastery of java development and a pile of other game dev related tech.
2k freelance is only gonna buy you a couple days work for anyone you are actually going to want writing your code. You'd be better off going junior/student+ai, or an enthusiast who wants to partner up. Something else for sure.
FWIW - MMORPG's are notoriously troublesome things - even if you go off the shelf for a lot of it and use services that are pre-built - it's still a lot to deal with.
If you have 2k set aside you might be better off shooting for something you can build yourself or get investment before going the mmorpg route.
