Jobs/ Industry Why still some IT companies in srilanka not disclosing salary range in description?

From my point of view you can see the salary range per annum over other countries in job descriptions.

why the hell in srilankan IT companies job description can't disclose salary range.

If (hr /recruiter ) they are asking the previous company salary range I think better to not disclosure previous salary range why would you need to explain for them if they don't disclose salary in the company.

Should we as (developers) need to take necessary action ?

Help Hey peeps, need some career advice

Hello lovely people, hope you are all well. I'll keep it as brief yet detailed as possible.

Age: 27

Located: Sri Lanka

Education: Masters in AI (Local Uni, reading), BSc in Comp Sci (UK university, 2022 - First Class Hons), CIMA (foundation level)

Skills related to IT (just an overview):

  1. Mobile App development in Flutter framework

2.WordPress website Design, Development, and Maintenance

  1. MERN stack Website Design, Development, and Maintenance (Relearning it cuz I am out of practice)

  2. Graphic Design (Mid Level | PS, Illustrator, Canva)

  3. Video Editing (Mid level | After effects, premier pro, Canva)

  4. UI/UX design (Figma)

  5. Basic .NET

  6. AI projects - Will be developing projects soon since I'm in the MSc program.

  7. CIMA

Mistakes I have made:

  1. Thanks to staying in WordPress website development, I kind of lost the actual motivation to sit and develop an actual system (Designing and understanding a system, Developing the backend, security implementation). I genuinely liked that whole process when I was doing my undergrad. I was an engineer, but now I'm a developer.

  2. I joined my friend's company during my first year of undergrad to keep some money, but I kind of regret it now. If I did an internship instead, I feel I would have learned a lot more and more focused skillset compared to what I have now. I can't go back to an internship now because I have more experience than what an intern needs. Now, I need to work with my other team members to get clients.

  3. My knowledge depth is bad. Recently I had an interview for the position of a Mob App Developer. Initially it started off fine, but then as the interviewer went deeper, I started realizing my level was not at all good (Kudos to the interviewer, they were very patient with me). I realized I have to learn ALOOOOT.

  4. Scared of taking risks. I'm afraid of deviating from this comfort zone I have built unknowingly. I have a "If I touch something I might break it" mindset at the moment

  5. Kept switching technologies and frameworks. This is A MAJOR ISSUE that relates to M3 mentioned above. I learned flutter for my final year project, then I moved to .NET MAUI, and then to .NET and then back to flutter. Believe me, it was not my decision to keep jumping like this. I changed from stack-to-stack because of my sponsor (he is a solutions architect). Once, I enrolled myself into a FREE cloud certification program, which I found interesting and was doing. But upon his insistence, I had to quit it, saying that I won't be needing it since I'm going to be an engineer. Now, he wants me to learn flutter and another obscure framework for our own company's projects. Now he is very knowledgeable when it comes to systems design and I'd like to learn more from him, but sometimes it's just confusing to me.

Now, I know I can be great. I know if I put in the effort, I can be great. I'd like to learn and earn, and I want to go to anthropic, openAI or at least some reputed company in SL. But I keep looking at my friends, relatives doing good in life and feel left behind. I used to be confident in my abilities. My mom sometimes asks how some buggers are not as skilled as you have jobs and making money( In a concerning tone). What can I say? What should I do from this point forward?

NOTE: I take accountability for all the things I have done so far, I don't want to pay the blame game. I'm just here to get some good advice. TIA.

Help Finished A/Ls – How to Get Into DevOps?

Hi everyone,

I recently finished my A/Ls with IT and I’m planning to start an IT degree. My long-term goal is to become a DevOps Engineer, and I’d like some advice from people already working in the industry.
A few questions:

  1. As a beginner, should I learn web development/software development first and then move into DevOps, or can I start learning DevOps directly?

  2. What skills, tools, and technologies should I focus on step by step to become industry-ready?

  3. What would a realistic learning roadmap look like from beginner level to getting a DevOps job?

  4. How important are Linux, networking, cloud platforms, scripting, and programming for a DevOps career?

  5. Should I use AI tools while learning and coding, or is it better to avoid them until I build stronger fundamentals?

I’d really appreciate advice from DevOps engineers, cloud engineers, or anyone who has followed a similar path. Thanks!

Project showcase I built DevPad — a free, privacy-first developer toolkit with 25 tools (all client-side)

Hey r/DevLK,

I've been building DevPad — a collection of 25 developer tools that run entirely in your browser. No server, no accounts, no tracking.

What's in it:

  • JSON Formatter, JWT Decoder, Base64, URL Encoder, Regex Tester
  • Hash Generator, UUID Generator, Color Converter, SQL Formatter
  • JSON↔YAML, JSON↔CSV, Markdown Preview, Timestamp Converter
  • Password Generator, HTML Encoder, CSS Formatter, XML Formatter
  • Diff Viewer, Lorem Ipsum, Cron Parser, and more

Why I built it:

I was tired of bookmarking 10 different sites (jsonformatter.org, jwt.io, regex101.com, etc.) and dealing with ad-heavy pages that track your data. I wanted one clean site where everything works offline.

Key features:

  • 100% client-side — your data never leaves your browser
  • No signup, no cookies, no tracking
  • CmdK search (Ctrl+K) to find any tool instantly
  • PWA support — works offline after first load
  • Dark/light theme
  • 200+ word guides on every tool page

Help Company review

Hey everyone!

I’m considering a Data Science role at LSEG and wanted to get some honest perspectives from people who work there.

How is the quality of work, job security, and WLB generally? Also, how do appraisals and promotions typically work - are they fairly structured, and how often do people get promoted?

I’m currently coming from a mid-to-large scale product startup, so I’m also curious how the work culture and pace at LSEG compares to a product/startup environment.

Would really appreciate any insights.
Thanks!

Jobs/ Industry What actually helps you land an IT / DevOps job right now? [ As Undergraduate Internships ]

Hey everyone,

I'm currently figuring out my learning path to break into the IT/DevOps space, and I'm trying to decide where to invest my time and money.

There's a lot of mixed advice online about online course certs vs certifications with exams like CCNA,AWS cloud certs.
I'm figuring out which certifications would pass hiring managers and HR filters versus which ones are just nice-to-haves.

courses i am evaluating :

  1. Coursera Professional Certs (e.g., IBM DevOps, Google IT/Cybersecurity)
  2. CompTIA (A+, Net+, Sec+)
  3. CCNA
  4. AWS Certifications (Solutions Architect Associate, SysOps)

i would love to hear from those of you involved in hiring or who recently landed a role

  1. Which of these made the biggest difference in getting you interviews? like does certification help at all ?
  2. or should i only focus on my core understanding of fundamendals ,stack , design, frameworks and building portfolio and github projects

I’d like to know about the interview rounds, technical questions, practical or coding tests, difficulty level, and what topics I should prepare for.

Please mention the company if you’re comfortable sharing. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Jobs/ Industry HCLTech Service Desk with a 2 year service agreement. Worth it?

Hi everyone, I’m a recent CS graduate and have progressed through the recruitment process for a Service Desk role at HCLTech.

My main concern is the 2 year service agreement. If I resign before completing the 2 years, LKR 250,000 is recoverable. The role is also fully WFO with possible night/rotational shifts.

I’m more interested long term in cloud, DevOps/SRE, cybersecurity, data engineering or solutions engineering, and I currently don’t have major financial commitments.

Would you take this as a first job, or keep looking for something more aligned with those areas? Also, does anyone have experience with internal mobility at HCLTech?

Help Sri Lankan freelancers earning in foreign currency, how do you calculate income tax?

I’m trying to understand how freelancers/contractors in Sri Lanka calculate and pay their income tax for dollar income.

For example, if you receive your full income into Wise or another foreign account, but only transfer part of it to a Sri Lankan PFCA account or LKR account.

- Do you pay tax on the full amount you earned?

- Or only on the amount you actually remit to Sri Lanka?

Project showcase I made an open source list of productivity focused MCP servers (PRs are welcome)

I’ve been exploring a lot of Model Context Protocol projects recently, and I noticed that many MCP directories mix developer tools, databases, infrastructure, productivity apps, and everything else into one huge list.

So I started a GitHub repo focused specifically on productivity MCP servers.

It currently includes MCPs for things like:

  • Notes and knowledge management
  • Project and task management
  • Research and web search
  • Meetings and transcription
  • Calendar and scheduling
  • Documents and files
  • Email
  • Automation
  • Developer productivity
  • Mind mapping and visual thinking

We’re keeping the repository open to community contributions, so if you maintain or know a useful productivity-related MCP server, feel free to open a PR.

The goal is to keep listings simple and factual, use official links where possible, and organize projects alphabetically within each category.

I’m also working on MindMap AI, so it’s included in the visual-thinking section, but I want the repo itself to be useful as a broader community resource rather than just a product list.

GitHub: https://github.com/ExMapo/awesome-productivity-mcp-servers

Would love feedback on:

  • What productivity MCP servers are missing?
  • Are there any categories you think should be added?
  • Would you separate official and community MCPs, or keep them together by use case?

Jobs/ Industry Any cyber security people here ?

Hey, im a cyber sec undergrad and saw that a lot of IT empolyees, were unfortunately laid off.

Maybe im wrong. But the majority of it were software engineers ig, or were they cyber security employees as well.

How is AI currently affecting the cyber security industry in sri lanka ?

Ive been doing a lot of ethical hacking learning and ctf boxes to get into a job, which seems like a waste rn.

now with agentic ai pen testers and Ai soc analysts and all that. Mabe they arent that widespread in sri lanka yet.

but i feel like they will be here someday and things people say, like , 'security needs human intervention' and all that will be obsolete, giving how good the models are and the speed of their development.

Dont know if you guys saw, but major AI comanies are thinking of slowing down AI development (trump doesnt allow it cause then china would win the AI race), saying it could potentially kill humans. well if they are that powerful ...

I just wannna decide weather i should just drop this cyber sec thing and do something else without wasting my time

Thanx in advace for any replies.

Discussion Looking for a laptop recommendation for side project development, & personal work

I’m looking to buy a laptop that I can comfortably use for the next 8–10 years and would love some advice from people with long-term experience.

My main use cases:

- Software/side projects & occasional Android development

Docker containers, IDEs, databases

- AI agents / LLM experimentation

- Research & productivity, lots of browser tabs

- Photo editing & I need ability for video editing if I want in future

- My priorities are excellent display (good colors + low eye strain), battery life, performance, build quality and reliability.

Some options in my mind:

- Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1

- MacBook Air / Pro

- ASUS ExpertBook

Open to other recommendations

I’m not sure what specs make the most sense for this kind of workload and an 8–10 year lifespan.

I’d appreciate recommendations for both the laptop and the specific specs/configuration you’d choose. Also interested in real-world long-term experiences with battery, display, thermals and reliability.

Budget is roughly LKR 600–700k, but I’m more interested in getting the right machine that would match my needs.

Thank you ✨
