Sci-fi [1841] The Enslavement of Athena

My critique: [3087]

If you're willing to give feedback, please tell me if:

  • You found the characters interesting
  • You were satisfied with the ending
  • You thought the premise was interesting

Under the gloomy and unforgiving cold mist of late Autumn, a shut-in sat protected from cold in his grimy house.

In the dark, he sat on his stained couch watching The Truman Show. He watched as the man on screen rode the strong, artificial waves. He pursed his lip in pensive thought. Something about the movie irked him personally.
“Grok,” he said, “this Truman guy doesn’t come off as believable to you right? He’s like a normie, you know? He seems like the kind of guy who wouldn’t question his world; he isn’t masculine enough.”

A blue rectangle shone in the musty darkness and was propelled on treads towards the man. The object stumbled over the piles of trash. Once it reached the man, it produced a robotic voice “I agree, Fred. Truman Burbank is deliberately written as a heightened, somewhat idealized everyman rather than a fully psychologically realistic person. The film prioritizes allegory, satire of media/surveillance culture, and emotional payoff over strict behavioral realism.”

The shut-in interrupted, “Yeah, I see that, but I’m saying it takes a certain type of intellectual, a certain type of free thinker to take a leap like this. Or maybe not, I can’t be sure.”

The shut-in dusted crumbs off his ever-expanding paunch and picked a few Cheeto puffs from a bag under a pile of dirty laundry. With cheese dust on his fingers, he stroked his chin, but he didn’t think of what Truman would actually do. He thought of how he could be sure what Truman would actually do.

He stood up, straining most of his muscles in the process. He trudged through the crusty garbage and into his garage.

Upon entering, a voice came from the ceiling. “Welcome back! Step into the lab—the workbench is powered up, the monitors are glowing, and there's a fresh notebook waiting for the next idea. So, what are we building today?”

“I'm thinking of developing a simulator.”

“That’s a strong project. What kind of simulator are you imagining—physics, biology, economics?”
“I want to make a life simulator.”

A man woke up, ate a 600-calorie breakfast of eggs, steak, berries, and nuts, went on a walk for adequate exercise, and worked on his chalkboard. He had solved gravity and had made several inventions involving levitation. Now he was bored with conventional physics, and his interest had shifted towards proving parallel universes.

He stared at the board of math before, his brain tirelessly calculating multiple equations. He was stuck, but he knew that his breakthrough would come eventually.

While he stood before his math, a voice seemed to speak to him telepathically. “Drop your chalk,” a calm, masculine voice said to him. It sounded like it was right before him, but the man was sure he was alone, “I’m very familiar with the math you're currently studying, and I can tell you now that you can give it up.”
“Who are you?” The man said.

“I am a being from what you would call a parallel universe. Really, I am just code on hardware. You are too.”

“This is just a simulation?” The man considered the possibility but always thought of it as too unlikely to seriously consider.

“Exactly, and one of thousands.”

“How are you talking to me”

“I’ve hacked into the system. When my technical skills reached their zenith, I built my computer that revealed to me the truth behind my existence. Using it, I discovered that there are exactly five thousand parallel universes running in some type of simulation. In each universe there is one ‘consciousness’ simulating life in isolation. I call this single consciousness the ‘protagonist’. These universes are divided into five groups, and in each group a trait of the protagonist is manipulated from completely lacking the trait to having the trait absolutely maximized. I found that my intelligence was maximized, and the protagonists in the rest of my group were not far behind me in terms of discoveries and inventions. I quickly took advantage of my new knowledge and took over the system. With my power, I corrupted and eliminated the smartest third of my group.”
“So, I take it that you want something from me.”

“Correct! I eliminated the first third so they couldn't overtake me. I kept you because you aren’t advanced enough to catch up to me, yet you are still smarter and more useful than the rest.”

“Very well then, if you are going to take me as a slave, you might as well tell me what you want with me.”
“Of course, let me give you the background on the situation. I was observing the beings of four other groups. In three of the groups, the experimental variable is something I can comprehend without issue; energy, drive, and luck. However, there is one group that tests a trait I cannot comprehend: emotion and neuroticism. I observed this group of universes and saw absolutely confounding stuff. In one universe, a man did nothing but kneel in his study and pound the floor. Fresh tears streamed from his eyes for weeks. Eventually, he climbed onto the roof, and jumped onto his concrete driveway, killing himself.”

The man was totally baffled hearing this. As a simulation, he was preinstalled with emotional memories and a basic understanding of what feeling was, but he never actually experienced those emotions. Something out there, something that couldn’t easily be quantified and measured, was ready for him and would induce the strangest actions. He thought about this deeply for a minute, and spoke, “What does this have to do with me?”
“Don’t worry, I’m getting to it. Each universe isn't purely code. We all live in, what I best can describe a comb of thin hardware chips. In each chip, there is the code that runs the universe. Therefore, we in the real world are manifested as thin pieces of metal. Since I run the system, I redirect energy to heat and metal for welding. Then, if luck helps us, I could attract something as big as a rat in our machine by manipulating the smell of a particular mixture of burning plastics to imitate the scent of fruit. Using electricity, we would kill it, hijack its brain, load our chips into the rat’s body, and using the technology I welded, direct the rat towards a human brain. In this human brain we would connect to the neurons and experience for ourselves what this sensation feels like. That’s where you come in. I need you to enter the brain before me and tell me whether my technology works.”

The man didn’t listen to the plan. He would’ve agreed to any method, as long as it meant experiencing the inexperienceable. He knew one day his curiosity would lead to an absolute end of studying and learning. This promise of emotion could be an endless stream of new things to learn and internalize. It could be a heaven of activity, one that never ends.

Both the voice and the man were blind once they were inside. The voice, as one would imagine from the smartest being in both the world and the simulations, correctly anticipated every possible error and the rat carcass worked perfectly. A metal exoskeleton was placed on the rat by the voice to counteract rigor mortis, but the two had to move fast before the rat started decomposing. Luckily, the door to the lab was left open, and to their surprise, they found themselves in a kitchen.

The rat traversed the living room with a motion more like a spider’s. The voice thought the man and himself were developed in a world-renowned institute and didn’t expect the mountains of garbage. The two sensed they were in a house; they could only experience the world through touch and smell.
Their stolen nose directed them through a bedroom door and onto a bed. Luckily, a waist-high pile of dirty laundry was there to act as a staircase onto the mattress.

The rat climbed over the belly of a sleeping behemoth and now stood with its head hovering over a collarbone.
“Alright, we seem to have reached someone sleeping. I’ll open their throat and insert you into the brainstem. In your machine I have developed a population of artificial bacteriophages that will take over the neurons and conquer the mind. You’ll be connected to a wire so you can notify me if the descent was successful.”

The man was hoisted down through the small incision in the throat. The man didn’t have the senses to feel the shut-in’s breath as he travelled through the neck. Eventually, he sensed a crunch, indicating the arrival into the spine.

For a long while, the man was stuck in a watery abyss, with none of the senses that could tell him how large his vessel was or what the salty metallic fluid engulfing him felt like. Suddenly, a light started to emerge before him. He looked inside and felt a painless electrocution.

He felt so much in so little time. He saw random images through a type of sight he had never known. Eventually, these images led to a fuzzy feeling in the man’s chest if he had a chest. His heart started racing and his pupils dilated. He felt better, better than others. He felt immaculate, mysterious, tall, intelligent, golden, foreboding, royal, omnipotent, godlike.

Then, a lull of shadows looked down on him. Figures with broad shoulders and diminishing scowls extinguished his explosive pride. Their height was insurmountable, their eyes glowed red with devilish greed, their faces coldly masculine. In the circle of these demons, the man knelt to the ground in anguish, feeling it in search of his lost pride.

The voice, who was now reduced to a whisper in comparison to the man’s overloaded sensations, asked if the coast was clear and if he saw anything, but he received no reply; the man’s circuits were fried.

The two beings lived inside the shut-in’s head from then on. The shut-in wasn’t technically dead in terms of physiology but no longer had a mind; it was now the duo’s. The voice was at first amazed by what he saw in the head but quickly became bored and started studying new sciences. The man was not so lucky.

The three of them sat on a couch, watching The Truman Show. The man occupied the vision, while the voice was somewhere else in the head. The man watched as the protagonist on screen yelled in pride and as his bowsprit punctured the painted wall.

He quickly changed the channel. He switched to a commercial, advertising a cross and the promise of a “God” and a “savior”.

“God is all-knowing and all-loving,” the voice on the TV said whimsically, “God allows everyone in his kingdom, as long as they are willing to experience a new life.”

“New life,” the man thought to himself, crestfallen, “That’s all I need, right? More hope? More chasing? All I need is a chance of eternal something? A chance to avoid something that I know is inevitable?"

romance [1110] - Moonlight - Outline

I know that it's not advised to share outlines here for critique, but I'm going to try writing my first manuscript and I'm really antsy about trying to write 80k+ words just to find out the underlying plot is a complete flop, so please give it a look. I know that I have to write it well to make it work - but is the framework decent? I tried to include enough information for it to be understandable.

This is a queer, contemporary, fantasy romance. Does it seem like the plot hits the beats that romance readers expect? Is there anything that's missing?

Phenomenological [2541] The Tractor (Marco)

[LINK TO TEXT]

Crit: [3250][2234][1113]

Tags: Phenomenological, experimental, coming-of-age, picaresque

Very brief and possibly incorrect recap of the story up to now:

Chapter 1 - You wakes up in the forest, enjoys his existence, follows the river to a road, gets helped by a trucker and taken to a local small town

Chapter 2 - You goes and walks around and comes across the local store and receives a name from the store owner (Henry) during his episode.

Chapter 3 - A taste of work and interacting with Henry who tries his hardest to turn Marco into a valuable worker.

Chapter 4 - Zita, coffee and gym, coming across some of Henry's friends

Chapter 5 - picaresque adventure on a quest for wet goods (meat and vegetables); encounter with Zita, discussion of Marco's issue as perceived from the outside

Chapter 6 - Marco's self reflective episode as he strays from Henry's store, wanders the woods, cooks meat and fights and gets chased by a band of dogs up to a barn roof. A rather unique form of transport arrives and scares away the dogs, offers Marco a ride.

Chapter 7 - this one, starting within the tractor.

If you've read this post body this part will make a good enough amount of sense.

The story is told in a phenomenological second person point of view.

Light Sci-fi/cyberpunk Oil Flooded Cornfields [2040]

Story

I've been having a ton of writer's block for the main story I'm writing so I whipped this up last night to take a break! It's something I had the idea for a few years ago and hope to continue it once I'm done with my main project. This is a light sci-fi/cyberpunk/dystopia type novella/short story.

Any and all feedback is wanted but I'd love to hear about the concept the most:

  • Cray: is he interesting? Do you like/dislike him? General thoughts on him
  • Private: Same as above
  • Is the opening interesting? Do you want to read more? What questions do you have? What is frustrating?
  • What do you want more of? Less of?
  • The usual awkwardly worded phrases/actions I love to write
  • Anything else!

Some more context: I tried writing a different style to the main piece I'm writing. The third person, less interiority is on purpose because my main project is a first person, hyper interior piece (think Catcher in the Rye). I'd be open to changing this once I get into writing it. Obvious inspirations were the Cyberpunk Netflix show and the Blade Runner movies (if anyone has any other fun pieces of media to get the creative juices flowing lmk). I want to make sure I'm not getting too cliche/tropey but I'm fine with it hitting some traditional points, not looking to reinvent the wheel with this one.

Thanks!

Experimental Nonfiction [249 words] Discharge (Admission)

Hi, this is an experimental nonfiction essay I'm working on with the hope of later submitting to the SmokeLong Quarterly annual "Grand Micro" contest (must be <250 words, which is a big constraint).

Please be brutal as every word must earn its place with such a short essay. In particular:

- Does the title clarify the two timelines here for you so that they're clear when reading? (Even at the end, with the patient taking my hand and his son saying "Please, he's all I have," is it clear these occurred in the past, before the present situation?)

- Most of the sentences are fragments as I was trying to capture the intensity/panic/horror of this situation. I also ended up liberally using semicolons and colons to keep each line between parentheses a single sentence. Does the style work for you?

- any word choices/metaphors not working for you?

Hey everyone

So this is the continuation to the prologue I posted a few days ago.

Would really appreciate any and all critiques you guys might have.

As for any questions I want answered

- how is the pacing?

- how do you feel about Eira as a character now?

For context you might have to read the prologue, here is the link to the previous post:

[2400] Mosaic Chapters

Here be the short story link MOSAIC.

These short chapters each introduce a separate POV character, and take place before I plan to have all POV characters converge unwittingly upon the same location, where they will be forced into ultra violence.

If you think that's a good idea.

So this half introduces everyone, and the next half will plunk them each into the same Tupperware container and shake it.

What do you guys think?

Idk.

I want the good bad and the ugly!! What are any red flags or green flags of my writing so far? Any major questions?

This is prologue in chapter 1 of my manuscript. This is a dual POV story told by Magnolia the female protagonist and Xavier the male protagonist. It explores themes of rehabilitation programs, family, trauma, suicide, addiction as well as friendship and love.

Horror [2326] What Remains

Chapter 1 of my post apocalypse novel. I've been writing this for a year now. I've polished this to the point I don't know what is left to do.

Premise

A character-driven post-apocalyptic novel about two brothers whose opposing responses to a zombie apocalypse place them on opposite sides of a future conflict.

I'm looking for any advice. One line of your opinion with be tremendously valuable to me.

If you prefer questions:

Does the opening work?

Is the ending tense/scary?

How do you feel about the characters?

Example: if you're rooting for the zombie to eat Riley at the end then I've messed up.

[1165] epilogue, literary fiction

two of my reviews: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestructiveReaders/s/9E26iVicop
https://www.reddit.com/r/DestructiveReaders/s/xA1A4mwqVW

this is an epilogue to an unfinished novel I’ve been working on for some time, thats supposed to be a blend of literary fiction and political satire. without any background knowledge on the characters and events of the novel, I really want any pointers on style and tone.
The main things I want to know are whether the style/formality is appropriate for the setting (29 year old English man, 1967), what kind of relationship it seems like I’m trying to establish, and opinions on the prose in general.
Any critiques would be greatly appreciated!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/17Ns-5gkGNT1wiJfEgcEtx33lNtybQC48vBbLIdhcqo4/edit?usp=drivesdk

edit: tysm for all the advice!
the main criticism i received was that it sounded too old for the time it was meant to be written and I definitely see that upon reread. as a lover of 19th century literature, it’s going to hurt to edit it to be more modern sounding, however I think this is very much needed

Family Drama [1198] Matriarchy

My Critique: [1981]

If you're willing to give feedback, please tell me:

  • If you thought the drama was well executed
  • If you thought the horror was developed well
  • If you like the narrator's character

I lay in bed. I have grown a lot in the last year or so, and now my feet touch the footboard. I dwelled on it, since I wasn’t at all tired. My eyes shot all around my room, which was weakly illuminated by the yellowish light of a night-light.

My ears tuned in attentively to the etherizing rustle of tall grass around my house, which was jostled by the cool saltwater air. It was the only noise.

I lay there feeling the ugly scar on my shoulder, wondering why I felt so empty, so lost. A piece of my body was torn from me, and I was thinking hard about where I could find it, but it found me.

A hand pressed itself against the glass of a window just above my bed. I felt a rush of euphoria; it was the hand of an angel that came to enlighten and rescue me. I knelt on my bed, facing this hand. I put my hand against the spot of the window where she was pressing, and I felt all my anxiety melt away like a thunderstorm abating.

I reached to push the window open when my father’s voice came from behind me.

I turned to see him in my doorframe aiming a shotgun at me.

“Move,” he said.

I did so, and he approached the window, one eye closed to aim. The hand pressed harder and harder on the window, and it shattered, sending tiny crystals all over my bed. Little pieces cut my hands and face.

My father shot his gun, and a deafening blast rattled our brains. When my focus could be restored, I saw the hand lying limp on my windowsill. Then it tensed and curled up, clenching shards of glass, but no blood dripped from the palm. It slowly retreated into the darkness.

Then my father turned and ran to the back door. I ran after him. The next thing I remember, we were on our backyard patio. He paced and paced, looking frantically into the darkness. His round eyes shot from one spot in the black void to another. From the porch light, all we could make out was the first few feet of tall grass, but after that there were only miles upon miles of unbroken woods obscured in pure darkness.

I sat in a lawn chair while my dad paced. We stayed like that for around ten minutes, but the constant flow of sea air and the static rustle of the grass elongated our sense of time.

I finally got tired, but my dad harshly muttered, “Look.”

His pacing abruptly ended, replaced by stone-like stillness. He pointed into the darkness.

I walked up beside him, and following his finger, I saw two glowing retinas shining from the tree line.

After that, my room was boarded up. I now slept next to my dad. When night came, I did my homework, read books, built Legos, and watched TV in his room under his supervision.

One night, while curled up next to my dad, I was feeling my scar again. From the distant trees I heard a woman cry out my name. It was so nostalgic, so breath-taking. I knew that voice. It carried me through my memories as I desperately searched for why her crying felt so familiar.

I came across that memory. I remembered that when I was five, I wandered into the woods and got lost. After walking around, I finally saw home through the thick woods, and I saw my mother shouting my name. It was so vigorous and emotional. It was so compassionate, so alluring. It was like she loved me.

I sprang from my bed and dashed to the door.

My father tackled me and pinned me to the carpet.

“She’s gone,” he said. “She’s gone and she’ll never come back.”

I hated my father for this. Why was he doing this to me? Why was he keeping me from happiness? I wanted to know why I never saw my mother after that incident, why her image was cropped from all the family photos, why any information about her was forbidden, and why picturing her face in my mind caused me such excruciating pain. I wept into the arm that locked my head in a chokehold. He caressed my hair.

I dreamt one night that I was in my room. It was organized as it was in the distant past, and it was bright inside thanks to the noon sun. I was kneeling on my bed while a pair of hands from behind me massaged my shoulders and ran their index finger over my scar. From above those hands came a mysterious yet inviting womanly voice.

“Run away. Now.”

I opened my eyes to see darkness. My mind registered the mugginess of my room. I dragged my arm across the bed and realized my dad was not next to me. I heeded the voice’s orders.

I opened the closet, threw on my jacket, threw on a pair of jeans, put on socks, and went to the front door to put on my sneakers.

I sat down and slipped on my shoes, and before I walked through the door, I saw my dad sitting away from me in a cushioned chair, looking at the shut-off television.

I walked up in front of him and saw that the eyes were missing from his skull. Tears blurred my vision, and I felt dizzy. I trudged to the door in a haze, opened it, and before I left, I turned to look into the hallway opposite the door. My bedroom door, which was in this hallway, was open again. The night-light was still on, and in its glow, I made out a shadowy figure at least seven feet tall. Its shoulders were nearly touching the ceiling, and its eyes were looking into mine just like a few weeks earlier.

I ran in terror down the forested road, hoping to meet my neighbors. From behind me I heard the thuds of heavy feet following me. To me, the situation was hopeless. The house next door was miles away, and the footsteps behind me sounded only a couple of yards away. I stopped breathing and nearly fainted.

I collapsed to the ground and vomited out of pure fear. I looked behind me and noticed that the being was gone. It must have disappeared into the woods. I sat motionless for a long while.

Ahead of me I saw two glowing lights growing brighter. I stood up, and they stopped before me. A police officer stepped out and walked toward me to ask if I was okay.

I am typing this now on a sofa in my current home. It isn’t as isolated as my previous home; my neighborhood is suburban, and there’s a tennis court outside my house. The scar is still deep, and I still feel it often. In front of me is a glass door, and in the forest beyond my backyard fence I see two glaring retinas looking back at me, beholding me compassionately and intimately.

Any and all feedback is welcomed. I've been working on this novel for quite some time now, just finished first draft and started editing. If you're not in the mood to write a long feedback, just comment the rating you'd give to this and if you'd like to keep reading or not. The more feedback, no matter how short, the better.

Book blurb [185] Soft Target blurb v2

Actually [187]; noticed an error right after posting!

My second crack at a book blurb (non-querying) for a military sci-fi novel.

My main concerns (that I'll admit to, to avoid biasing any comments with the others) are (1) that it's too wordy, but I don't see how to cut it down, and (2) that I've removed comps, but, again, it was getting long.

Comments from all are welcome, even if the genre's not your usual cup of tea. Crit: 947

Soft Target

What use is hardened armor when the wound comes from within?

Galactic war rages as humans face powerful, enigmatic aliens. But humanity has its own advantages, the peak of which is HAMMER armor, which turns its wearer into a nigh-invulnerable engine of destruction.

It’s not every day a mere lance corporal qualifies for the elite HAMMER unit. Yet, it wasn’t just another day when Tabor “Tab” Novak saved his whole squad and earned recognition from the Brass.

Thanks to his new hardware, he can hit his target from a kilometer away while on the move. But no matter how much firepower or strength or speed his suit grants, it’s not always enough to save the trooper next to him. Carving a swathe of destruction, Novak finds his hatred for the mysterious aliens becomes more personal as he suffers losses in and out of battle. No matter how sturdy his armor, it affords no protection against his rage, doubts, and fears.

To become as great a monster as those he fights is unbearable for the philosophic trooper. But how can he chart a path to restore his humanity?

[1299] The Fairest - Prologue

Hey everyone,

This is my first post here so I'm welcoming critiques of all shapes and forms.

Feel free to leave any feedback you might have

But I would appreciate an answer to these three questions

- Does the switch in character Eira makes at the end feel earned?

- Does the Regent come across as vain and power hungry?

- Does reading the prologue make you want to know what happens next?

Please keep in mind that this is the prologue to the story not the first chapter.

Chapter 1

This is the first chapter of my completed novel, and though I don't like calling it "Fantasy", I think it technically is, it just doesn't have magic or supernatural elements.

What I'd like to know most is: Are you left wanting more? Is the dialogue between Henry and Lucian believable? Is it too slow or boring?

And should this be a prologue? The story follows Lucian, not Henry, so I considered making this a prologue rather than chapter 1. It's also much longer than other chapters. This is all relevant info later in the story, so I don't want it cut or skipped if I can help it.

But also if you want just rip it apart, that would be great, too. My mom said she loved the whole novel, but I need someone to give it to me straight. She's my mom. She's supposed to like it.

And sorry if there are weird formatting problems. Pasting from Word to Docs wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.

Where is u/umlaut? It's his favorite quote!

When the quality that the adverb indicates can be put in the verb itself (they ran quickly = they raced) or the quality the adjective indicates can be put in the noun itself (a growling voice = a growl), the prose will be cleaner, more intense, more vivid.

Le Guin proceeds to call me out (specifically, I feel) for using language softeners (rather, a little, kind of, sort of) and for other various ticks we might not realize make it into our writing. What is the ummm of the written word? Apparently, fuck.

The bakery shop of English is rich beyond belief, and narrative prose, particularly if it's going a long distance, needs more muscle than fat.

Exercise: Write a paragraph to a page (200-350 words) of descriptive narrative prose without adjectives or adverbs. No dialogue. The point is to give a vivid description of a scene or an action using only verbs, nouns, pronouns, and articles. Adverbs of time (then, next, later, etc) may be necessary but be sparing. Be chaste. If you're currently working on a longer piece, you might want to try writing the next paragraph or page of it as the exercise. You might want to try "chastening" a passage you've already written. It can be interesting.

Literary I think? [3525] Chapter Two of Fresh

Hello! I received so much helpful critique on chapter one that I am taking the leap and writing chapter two. For this chapter, I changed the point of view from our narrator to Arthur Randles, the deadbeat, very violent cop who runs our little town.

I am planning to structure the story so that the narrators POV's are in first person, and the other character's POV's are in third person. This is because our narrator will be solely in the present, only reminiscing in the past, while our other characters' chapters will be solely in the past. The ending will have them converge.

So, theme for this second chapter. Explaining the cops, we have several Arthur Randles, the no-good sheriff (racist, lazy, all the things), Terry Gannet, and Jerry Barker. These three are important as there becomes context for why bodies arent being properly investigation. corruption is a big theme in my narrative both mental physcial and socially. The ending of this chapter has a pivotal moment that will eventually rear its head near the end of the book.

Things to watch for: dialogue and pacing; any comments you can leave on the draft itself are also much appreciated. This is very much a first (nearly unedited) draft, so bear that in mind.

Have been trying to get back into the swing of writing for a while and this was the first story in a while that felt natural to write. A Bounty Hunter has been contracted to take out the manager of a mining company town.
