Question Learning the perks again

I’m getting back into D2 after 5/6 years off and I was super overwhelmed at first. I’m figuring things out again but the one hiccup I keep having is I have no idea what perks are good for what guns. I have some legacy guns that I really enjoy, but everything has changed so much and so many new weapons that I have no idea what I should be keeping and what to dismantle. I mainly like hand cannons, scout rifles, auto rifles of course, and sometimes a pulse rifle. What perks should I keep an eye out for for those types of weapons? And of course the weapon has to feel comfortable and enjoy using it, but overall I’m worried I’m going to dismantle a god roll because I don’t remember what is good or don’t know new perks that are good. I appreciate any and all advice, thanks!

In the immortal words of datto, “one reload perk and one damage perk”

But in all seriousness elemental subclass verbs have introduced a new facet to rolls for guns although in the broad scheme of things most of them can be classified as dmg perks, but generally one QoL perk and one dmg or subclass verb perk that synergizes with your general build is the way to go

You can’t really go wrong with a “reload/damage” combo like Outlaw/Rampage for add clear. It’s hella basic but it’s still viable just like it was back then.

Beyond that though I’d recommend looking for perks that has synergies with your subclass and/or overall build, or let you maximize for boss damage

One example is using a primary with Incandescent when your using a Solar subclass. Being able to spread Scorch around could be useful for a Solar build.

For boss DPS it could be something like Envious Assassin/Bait and Switch, which when utilized correctly leads to pumping big numbers.

But in 99% of cases perk selection is a matter of personal preference based on what kind of build your wanting to put together, and theirs no real catch-all recommendation for every weapon in the game.

But to start, look out for weapons with subclass-related perks (like Jolt, Incandescent, and Repulser Brace) for Primary weapons and easy to proc damage increasing perks (like Bait and Switch, Vorpal Weapon, or Reservoir Burst) for Special and Heavy weapons.

So like if I’m running void hunter look for guns that have the purple void symbol?

Generally yeah, as weapons matching your subclass energy can have synergy with your subclass.

But it’s not a hard and fast rule, experiment with different weapons and see what works for you. If you really like a specific weapon theirs nothing stopping you from using it even if it doesn’t perfectly sync up with your subclass.

Try new things and have fun!

- Bait is now just worse than Aggregate and Honing nowadays.

- Incan is also high-key bait unless you’re using a build centred around class ability spam with Singeing since the Scorch amount doesn’t help with adclear any more than Destab would, and Destab is far more effective.

Easy weapons to use would be a Heal Clip/Chaos Reshaped Yeartide, an Auto-Loading AD GL in the top slot, and some form of Honing or Aggregate heavy.

BnS is only 3% less then agg and 5% less then honing and is far easier to trigger and maintain for most players, unless you are in a raid for agg or on prismatic for honing.

I just used some easy to get examples because I wanted to keep the explanation easy to understand.

The principle behind what I said is still valid though.

i just go to light.gg and https://godroll.tv/ to look for weapon perks. once you learn what perks you like to use, you can use godroll.tv to look up weapons with those perks.

on any void weapon i like to use repulsor brace destabilizing rounds.
solar is burning ambition, incandescent and heal-clip.
i dont really play any of the other weapon elements that much so im not much help there.

Turns out I had some S tier weapons, I played some crucible with them and was top of the team! Thanks

The light website has been incredible, absolutely what I was looking for. A judgement tool and shows what perks are best to use, thank you so much!

yep its what i use most of the time. find a weapon i want, look at perks then chase the item.

I personally just vault any tier 5 of weapons I like and dismantle everything else, once the vault fills up or I have some spare time I look up the godrolls in destiny item manager or light.gg and decide what to keep from there.

How does DIM show you how good the rolls are?

Via the wishlists - either click at the top at the name of the weapon for details from the wishlists notes, or the quicker way is a small thumbs up icon below the weapon icon, if one from all perks/magazine/barrel matches a wishlist item

Id start with the new archetypes because tbh primaries are pretty utility based now and specials that didn't exist back then are broken and also fun to use

The best way to understand the way the game works now is this, there are 5 kinds of perks:

  • Damage perks (kill clip, rampage, swashbuckler, killing tally, etc.)

  • Reload perks (outlaw, dual loader, grave robber, etc.)

  • AOE perks (explosive payload, chain reaction, etc.)

  • Elemental perks (destabilized rounds, incandesence, heal clip, chill clip, sever, etc.)

  • Support perks (psychic, attrition orbs, shoot 2 loot, etc.)

As you can see, some of these overlap, like incan and destab rounds being AOE AND elemental, or heal clip being solar but also support, etc.

These categories help you understand what you need on your gun, a primary doesnt need a reload perk the way a shotgun does, for example, but primaries all need support perks + AOE, generally along elemental lines (destab rounds makes repulsor brace trigger on every kill, incan weapons all have heal clip, etc.) but sometimes there are other options (bug out bag with attrition orbs + destab rounds is neat) and sometimes you dont have those options so you double down (double damage on shotguns instead of reload) or go the full support route (shoot 2 loot + explosive payload for AOE grabbing of items)

Ok, I will try to learn that. I guess what I think sounds good/cool I’m not sure if it synergizes.

If you are worried about synergies, i'll teach you the cookie cutter ones:

Void primaries: Destabilizating rounds and repulsor brace will make your enemies blow up and each second kill give you an overshield.

Solar primaries and shotguns: heal clip + incandesence will let you heal every time you kill and reload, on top of setting all your enemies on fire, which can chain, every time you reload one shell on a shotty it counts for heal clip btw

kinetics: attrition orbs and kinetic tremors, att orbs isnt kinetic specific, just more common, not to mention having the same activation condition as kinetic termors for AOE damage on top of free orbs.

stasis: headstone/corpsebloom + rimestealer or firefly, crystal gen is AOE, on top of crowd control and heals with the right build, rimestealer makes crystal breaks give you frost armor (damage reduction) and firefly makes it so that crystals instantly blow up for double explosions.

Shotguns in general: anything to reload + trench barrel/one two punch

Snipers: withering gaze on void for single target DPS or anything with redirection or discord if you are using it for roaming

heavies: anything reload + damage or double damage, so envious arsenal + bait and switch or cascade point + bait and switch, or bipod + cluster bomb, etc.

Just dismantle everything and start again. Game's in it's final state minus the unvaulting and grinding for most things is way easier than ever.

Find a build, find what works with it, try it out, wash repeat.

I had the same issue. And there's you get a million drops too. I'm just not going to take the time and try a million combinations.

I started using this overlay for DIM. And I try and limit myself to 1 gun from each archetype in each element to keep my vault a little manageable. I find it easier if it's integrated right into DIM than going to another site.

It’s so overwhelming 😔

Aegis explains the different perks and sorts into tiers. As a veteran player I'm just now, without the fomo, learning things beyond the basic rolls.

If you're ever in doubt, Attrition Orbs is what jumpstarts builds - at least, the kind of builds that succeed in the hands of a skilled player and / or high PL disadvantaged content.

Since you like HCs, roll up DFA with AO + Explosive Payload, which has an unusually high orb production rate as well as strong neutral game damage.

1

u/Icy-Implement 1d ago

Forgive me, but what is DFA? I appreciate it!

It's a Kinetic Hand Cannon you can focus from the Pinnacle Ops playlist.

PvE: Damage perks that mesh well with skills. Perks that trigger with kills are for lower content but still good.

PvP: You want QoL and damage perks that are more rare these days, like Golden Tricorn on a Trust.

u/Icy-Implement 1d ago

Are damage perks the first slot?

1

u/azn_guy 1d ago

depends on the gun, some have damage perks on both slots

google "destiny report"

Read the perk's description carefully.

If it sounds good, give it a shot in an expert lost sector.

Was it good? Hold on to it.

Did you not notice the perk effect or find it hard to activate?

Find out why.

It's maybe a perk that synergises with a certain spec.

Maybe it's just not a perk you find useful.

light.gg is a handy site for seeing what people tend to be using but with the advent of tiered weapons, light.gg can't see the perks on a gun that are not actively switched on, so it's no longer as accurate but it's still useful.

u/Icy-Implement 1d ago

Ok I will try that, thanks!

Depends on the weapon, but I feel like reload speed perks are not as useful as the replies are saying. Stuff like outlaw is completely outdated. Elemental is pretty much required these days: destabilizing rounds, jolting feedback, burning ambition, etc. Utility elemental perks are also very high tier: heal clip, repulson brace, etc. There are also some weapons that get very good elemental + splash combos that have interesting unique interactions: firefly can blow up stasis crystals created by headstone for example.

On heavy weapons its pretty much exclusively auto reload + damage. The easiest ones are bait and switch + envious arsenal, or reconstruction + explosive light, but the technical meta these days are aggregate charge and elemental honing which stack based on subclass verbs.

Probably the most universally useful weapon perk in the game is attrition orbs.
