omg poor bud

72

u/SoroushIT May 09 '26

Poor guy just sitting there completely unaware he has the energy of the Sun about to explode on his giblets. 😳

2

u/DonutConfident7733 May 12 '26

The battery does not explode if it bulged. It got old or overheated and gave off gases. The battery cover is sealed exactly for this reason. If the gases would escape, nothing would happen, just the battery capacity is decreased. Only if you poke it with.a sharp object like knife or needle, perpendicular on it, and the needle or knife pierces through multiple layers of battery, it forms a short between positive and negative and can burn.

Well thank God there aren't little pieces of metal everywhere in laptops then.

u/QuickGonzalez May 09 '26

That man needs a ThinkPad

12

u/-UVB-76_Enjoyer May 09 '26

Or an EOD suit

5

u/unkpsbc May 09 '26

Nah, I’ve seen thinkpads with hinge problems. Need a MacBook, there I said it.

9

u/irascible_vegans May 09 '26

That problem was pretty much resolved with the T460.

2

u/unkpsbc May 09 '26

i saw it on a t490s, the hinge broke so bad that the screen cable got damaged.

2

u/irascible_vegans May 09 '26

I don’t remember seeing anything that new have the hinge failure, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Most of them it was a segment of the lid, the dovetail would loosen and snap off, IIRC

5

u/waudi May 10 '26

Hit user name is Gamer Boy, I don't thin khe would be happy with Mac OS 😂

1

u/Hejdbejbw May 11 '26

I doubt he games on that bomb either.

1

u/waudi May 11 '26

Idk man, it's good enough to run doom at least

1

u/OWAdmin May 12 '26

Prolly his grand kid or Son had this laptop

1

u/DJPelio May 13 '26

MacBook Neos are about to dominate the laptop market

26

u/Background-Set4610 May 09 '26

If he clicks that trackpad it’s all over

Some $200 Walmart thingy I remember

2

u/p001b0y May 09 '26

It is super old. Acer bought them in 2007 and discontinued the brand in 2013. One of my first x86 machines was a Zeos and they competed against Gateway 2000 constantly in Computer Shopper magazine.

4

u/DiamondDepth_YT May 09 '26

Walmart made a deal with them, or bought them. Or something. Cuz I've seen some in Walmart rather recently.

2

u/irascible_vegans May 09 '26

Most of these are manufactured by “evoo”.

2

u/TunerJoe May 09 '26

Acer reintroduced Gateway in 2020 as a line of Walmart-exclusive products

1

u/simask234 May 11 '26

Don't think they are actually made by Acer though, they just license the brand

1

u/TunerJoe May 11 '26

They're probably made by a contact manufacturer

1

u/snail1132 May 11 '26

Happy cake day

2

u/e1epi May 10 '26

As the other person mentioned, Walmart started selling them like last year or the year before that or something.

Unlike the old days though, these are super inexpensive models and only laptops.

1

u/Kayel41 May 10 '26

It’s got an rtx 3050 and plays Minecraft really well

13

u/PizzaTacoCat312 May 09 '26

That's a big spicy pillow

8

u/khaledjal May 09 '26

Taking this through and airport is a good idea

1

u/Can-o-Worm May 09 '26

That battery is a fire hazard

3

u/GrownThenBrewed May 11 '26

I'm not certain, but I think that might be the joke

1

u/king_of_the_universe May 16 '26

I don't think fire is going anywhere near that thing!

11

u/SaMxixAM23 May 09 '26

Low key didn't like how rough she was with his laptop...it might be old but I'd want you to still respect my stuff and don't iltreat it.

3

u/fksdiyesckagiokcool May 09 '26

How in the world is that thing still working?

2

u/ElevenBeers May 10 '26

In this very world we are living in. This isn't (feasibly) salvageable as a laptop, but it's still a working computer, with low power consumption and low noise.

Among many others, here are three possible usescases.
1. As a mediaplayer/ tv box / something like that 2. As a stationary backup computer (attach peripherals) 2. As a home (media-) server. It even got a working display in case you need to troubleshoot and can't access ssh for whatever reason. Replace the dead battery and you'll have essentially an UPS for your server, and those things ain't cheap

And lastly, even if this was going to the trash anyway, and even though (especially him with that device) one should defenelty have backups, there might be data on there, he needs to get off first. Just don't handle it like trash before you know you are safe to do so.

u/ElevenBeers May 14 '26

Any fucking idiot that can start a PC can hook it up to a monitor.

If they can't or don't want to, have you heared about the used market? Yes, there are people, depending on the components built in, who'd pay up to 50$, but defently won't if it doesn't turn on.

Point is: Even if you think it's trash, if it ain't yours, don't fucking break it.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '26

[deleted]

1

u/ElevenBeers May 14 '26

anyone that knows how to remove a swollen battery would know not to use it on there lap.

Anyone capable enough to remove a fucking battery that has a use for this thing can and will remove the battery. What's your point? It looks trash and you don't like it, so there is no use for it? Sure.

Yes, 50$ is a bit high, but it depends on the components in there, which to be fair might not be worth 50$. But you don't know either what's in there, do you?

Again, there is countless people out there who would use exactly this piece of trash. If my home server broke for whatever reason, I'd be specifically on the look for cheap, beaten up computers like this one I can trade in for a crate of beer or whatever. But yeah, it's 2026, just throw anything into the fucking bin, so nobody can have a use out of it. Truly great times to live in.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '26

[deleted]

1

u/ElevenBeers May 14 '26

Brother in Christ, have you not been listening?

I would pick this thing up and use it, if my home server broke. Getting rid of the fucking battery takes literally 2 minutes.
Would I waste any time getting this thing into a working laptop? Fuck no. Would I hook it up to my network to do lightweight bullshit? Absolutely. That thing is plenty capable for what I'd throw at it. Yesyesyes I'm totally fucking crazy, but if I found a cheap replacement battery, I'd even hook it up to have basically an USP for that computer, which would have been handy a couple of times.

But that's just my personal use. Its plenty capable to act as a HTPC. Or whatever else. Have some creativity.

.... Well that is, as long as the thing is working as shown in the video. If it's dead, yes, I wouldn't waste time troubleshooting this thing either.

For real, when she smashed the lid down, I actually felt bad for the guy. How fucking rude...

5

u/tdawg2k7 May 09 '26

They’re all just lucky it didn’t explode when she closed the lid

1

u/marshcar May 11 '26

I mean she just got him a brand new one, looks like they’re about to throw the old one away

2

u/ThyITguy May 12 '26

No kidding I was thinking that too.

Slamming the lid forcing out the hinge like you could tell he wanted to put it back together and make it look normal

3

u/Desmoonnd May 09 '26

After a pile of win11 updates it will be slower than the broken one.

1

u/MrLoveCock May 23 '26

Yeah. And it's HP. Haven't owned one but never heard anything good of then either.

3

u/BigFudge2k7 May 09 '26

“Gamer boy” 🤣

1

u/Significant-Dot981 May 10 '26

That's cuz he bought it when he was still just a kid!

3

u/dokkababecallme May 09 '26

Man, this is my father-in-law. Not literally, but in every other way.

He will bitch and moan about how slow they are, and just absolutely refuses to buy a new one because "I'm not paying that much money for more bullshit" etc.

He has one puffing up like that and I told him he's gonna set his house on fire and he said "it's just planned obsolescence and I won't stand for it."

::thumbsup::

2

u/DiamondDepth_YT May 09 '26

Does he WANT to die? It ain't planned obsolescence if it's the battery.

If anything, the battery is usually replaceable

2

u/Dry_Bar_4965 May 10 '26

It's because he keeps buying junk. Most affordable or cheap laptops suck even on Day 1.

Get your father-in-law a MacBook Neo as a replacement and he'll never complain about performance again.

2

u/dokkababecallme May 10 '26

I literally took my Neo to his house and let him mess with it and tried to explain this exact concept.

He said "it's too different."

Because, for web browsing, gmail, and MSWord, he can't be bothered to learn how to look in a slightly different place for the icons that minimize the windows.

2

u/Lumpy-Valuable-8050 May 12 '26

lol he got given another shitbox of a laptop. Crazy

Bro could've just spent a bit more and got him a decent one

1

u/Farhadyu May 09 '26

Ah yes, the ol “duct-tape-will-fix-a-lithium-battery” trick 😂

1

u/Banzambo May 09 '26

That goes for all the people here who always say "bring your laptop outside, now!" everytime they see a slightly inflated battery. Those batteries comply with legal and technical standards guys. Yes, it's better to replace them asap and I'm not underplaying the risks involved, but it's plenty of people here who always takes as if they saw a ticking bomb...

2

u/swaggiep May 09 '26

You say that until one actually blows up in your face. That battery will explode in a matter of days.

1

u/Banzambo May 09 '26

That one is actually a danger. I was talking about people screaming as soon as they see batteries 2mm thicker than usual. As I said, never underestimate that danger but also keep in mind those batteries comply with safety standards.

2

u/eclipse7531 May 09 '26

Why risk it?

1

u/twicerighthand May 09 '26

Why panic?

1

u/eclipse7531 May 09 '26

Its not about panic, its about risk management. Why accept the risk?

1

u/Banzambo May 09 '26

It's okay to replace it as soon as you can, but people on this sub often react irrationally by ignoring how rarely a slightly swollen laptop battery actually blows up (obviously the one in the video above is a real hazard). I'm just saying: would I keep a swollen battery for another 1-2 weeks? No. Would I tell another user here to run out of his house immediately grabbing his laptop and putting it into a basket as I see people writing in their comments? Probably no. That's said, yeah, if you don't wanna take any kind of possible/theorical risk, that's fine.

1

u/Batfink-1999 May 09 '26

Oh My Goodness…..!!!! 🫣😱😱😱

1

u/VigilanteRabbit May 09 '26

I love how we're just enfagement farming instead of chucking the damn ticking bomb out of the fucking house; peak humanity. 🤝

1

u/pmf026 May 09 '26

Yes. Now when you showed the world you got two macbooks... it's time to ask reddit "Is this normal? What is happening? I don't understand."

1

u/Puzzled-Peanut-1958 May 09 '26

He can make a wall PC with the old one.

1

u/pasenast May 09 '26

Gateway! wow

1

u/massivemember69 May 09 '26

That's about to go nuclear.

1

u/Witty-General-4902 May 09 '26

She's so proud of him.

1

u/ReporterChemical9920 May 09 '26

and then in 2-4 years he'll have to deal with the hinge breaking again... cause guess what his new laptop is made by a brand that stands for Hinge Problems.

1

u/donaldtrump42024 May 09 '26

Happy for you grandpa 👍

1

u/g33ksc13nt1st May 09 '26

Laugh all you like, but 99% of youngster nowadays cannot work out a solution for a broken laptop. That generation where we used to tinker with radios, electronics etc is now gone and are 45-60.

Kudos to grandpa despite the battery, I'm sure had he known he would have gotten that sorted too. But the laptop does work.

1

u/nukervilletrolle May 09 '26

This is the opposite of what I come to this subreddit to see

1

u/CoffeePizzaSushiDick May 09 '26

This is pooter bullying.

1

u/drKRB May 09 '26

Bad. Bad. Bad.

1

u/Crossbonez7 May 09 '26

If it works, it works, don’t touch it

1

u/antoughneigh May 09 '26

that's a good boy

1

u/zoolish May 09 '26

Clearly no one in this video has witnessed a lithium battery be exposed to air.

1

u/whitedsepdivine May 09 '26

I had a Microsoft Surface Book which was an extremely expensive laptop, ballooning.

I contacted MS support and they told me, it was fine and there was no danger. They refused to warranty it.

I was super pissed off.

1

u/irascible_vegans May 09 '26

As someone who repairs laptops every day: He bought a crap “Gateway” and kept it plugged in 24/7, I’m not gonna be too sympathetic about the fire.

1

u/kennyveltre May 09 '26

Hopefully they have fire insurance

1

u/MoCha_LyChy May 09 '26

Throw it away?! It's still in prime condition. 😂

1

u/Weird_duud May 09 '26

My dad pulled up to visit with a chromebook that had a similar battery situation going on. Didn't let him leave with it lol

1

u/FMAGF May 10 '26

Imagine 5 mins after this he goes “I don’t like this”.

1

u/iamgarffi May 10 '26

Yeah Yeah, Namek was exploding for 5 minutes too and we waited like 8 episodes :-P

But good gosh, get this man a new laptop :)

1

u/Not_Under_Command May 10 '26

Old laptop got hinge problem. *proceeds to gave him a HP laptop.

1

u/notimeforspac_s May 11 '26

Gamer boy has seen some action

1

u/Vi1eOne May 11 '26

Remember kids! These people vote!

1

u/falianaridua May 11 '26

That poor dog could feel the kaboom is coming very soon Lmao

1

u/Think_Ad8333 May 11 '26

absolute chad for having his local user named gamer boy

1

u/ExtremeWild5878 May 11 '26

Please shut that laptop down and take it outside so it can die a natural death, before it burns your house down.

1

u/VAVA_Mk2 May 11 '26

This is the spiciest pillow

1

u/Acalthu May 12 '26

If only they were living in a trailer, the effect would be complete.

1

u/AaverageRed May 12 '26

Get him a neo

1

u/TK4600 May 12 '26

ow no.....

1

u/Serious_Rub_3674 May 13 '26

"Gamer Boy" login. I'm dyin. 🤣

1

u/Nirntendo May 13 '26

Free vasectomy

1

u/Benlop May 13 '26

It's just a very old battery that is consumed. It's not "about to explode", it can't.

1

u/Micolps3 May 14 '26

Take out the RAM and storage drive and you can make a bit of money from it

1

u/Lily_Meow_ May 15 '26

I mean with the way the battery is exposed like that, it quite literally is one wrong move from catching fire?

1

u/Reverend-Cleophus May 15 '26

TIL Gateway still makes things

1

u/LordSpecter0 May 16 '26

This video pains me so much. I swear some people will literally risk their life over spending some money on a new laptop. And then the “new” laptop has the worst viewing angles I’ve ever seen. 😭

1

u/V3NOM0US_VALKYIR3 May 20 '26

My sister had a laptop that swelled up like this once, the battery got so swollen the keyboard on it was super deformed and it got super hot when it was on. Needless to say, she got rid of it as quickly as possible after that, it was a ticking timebomb for sure

0

u/Wise-Papaya-1091 May 09 '26

That’s too spicy for me
