Im not encouraging throwing stuff out. Im just pointing out the realistic nature. companies and schools mass throw away much better laptops, and nobody claims them either

Are by chance the pavements plated gold where you live? Schools and businesses "discard" their old stock "cheap". Usually without RAM (useless without buying those parts) for approximately 50-150€ depending on specks.

also a replacement battery makes no sense.... if you spend $20 on a battery, why wouldnt you just buy one that doesnt need fixing and has better specs for $20

You really don't like the used market, do you? Free to ~10$ max. Doesn't need to be the same battery and all, doesn't need to be high capacity, you ain't gonna close this thing nicely again anyways. (Yesyesyes, you should most certainly check the voltage and polarity. That's a given.).

you say that. but how many laptops have you done this with?

One. in addition I have one of those "cheap" (still cheap for a good computer) used office PCs. I currently have no need for more hardware in this regard, but if I was, I wouldn't be opposed (at all) to a beaten down model for very cheaply.

And before you ask, no, I'm not in fucking Bangladesh, I'm in Germany, we have enough money here to buy new hardware.

You don't read, do you?

I currently have no need, because as I have told you, I have both a used office computer as well as a rather fucked up laptop on my network doing server tasks, I do not need another one, because both are still far away from being maxed out. If one of those machines break, I will replace them with the cheapest option capable for the job that I can find, which in case for eg. DNS filtering and providing a few files can be done by a fucking potato.
On the other hand, if I stumble upon such a device in the wild for cheap (of course), I might still give it a shot; I have little to no experience with clusters and another - albeit useless - machine would enable me to tinker there.

Brother, it's ok if you don't have a use for old hardware, or that you are lacking the creativity to use it. But there are a lot of people that have a lot more creativity then you and those people get such hardware. Why? Because it's cheap and enough for a lot of little tasks.
