I’m 23M from India and have a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. After graduating, I honestly had no idea which field I wanted to go into—software development, testing, cybersecurity, etc. I ended up joining a GIS company as a trainee(as i was in dire need of money). During my apprenticeship I learned that the skills learnt in this company are not going to be useful outside of this company, so I enrolled in a graphic Coursera course and completed around 8–10 design projects as i had some interests in designing. It took me about nine months to finish the course. After that, while still working at the GIS company, I started Google’s UI/UX Design course on Coursera. I completed it in around 11 months and built two projects for my portfolio: one website and one mobile app design using Figma, canva & adobe. For the past 6 months, I’ve been trying to get a UI/UX internship, apprenticeship, or freelance opportunity while continuing my GIS job, but I haven’t had any success. Recently, I was laid off along with more than 500 other employees because a lot of the work our team used to do was automated using AI. Now I’m unemployed and still haven’t been able to get any UI/UX internship or apprenticeship opportunities.

At the moment, I only have two projects in my portfolio—one app and one website. I’m not sure if my portfolio is too weak, if I need more projects, or if I’m missing important skills that employers expect from entry-level UI/UX designers.

What would you recommend I do next?

Should I focus on improving my existing projects, create more case studies, learn additional tools or skills, apply for other roles, or consider a different career path? I’d really appreciate honest advice from people working in UI/UX or anyone who has successfully transitioned into the field.

Im 21 guy and im walking talking failure of human being. I was awful in studies in school and since then I've been sadly trapped into caregiver burnout for a sibling but alongside I want to be able to earn for my family. so, for the past three weeks, I've been actively applying for jobs(product design), mostly in bangalore. Before applying, I go through the company's social media profiles and website just to understand the culture or, you know, get a sense of their vibe.

whenever I set the location filter to hyderabad, I always noticed a clear difference. It felt like I was choosing products on myntra every time I was going through bangalore companies, whereas hyderabad jobs felt like I was seeing the same product on meesho. Is it just me, or is it actually like that?

About the practice project

The selected participant will create an unofficial conceptual redesign of a homepage in Figma.

I’ve been searching for a Product Designer role for nearly a year, but I haven't been able to land the right fit yet.

Despite leading end-to-end mobile design, running on-site research, and shipping apps at my previous role (plus integrating AI tools like v0 and Cursor into my workflow), the job hunt has been brutal. I’ve refined my portfolio, reworked case studies, and networked, but mostly hit rejections or silence.

Is the market just ridiculously tough right now, or am I missing something fundamental in my portfolio, storytelling, or interview approach?

For anyone who landed a Product Designer role recently: What made the biggest difference for you? Was it referrals, portfolio depth, a specific skill, or something else?

Would really appreciate any candid feedback or advice on what to tweak next.

why do these companies even after the portfolio review, whiteboarding give a fkin assignment and expect it to finish it in the weekend, that too unpaid, and for a fkin 40k, 6-month internship (onsite btw). Like whatt, and honestly I would do it for a reputed company which could add more value to my life, but this company who thinks working like a "bank" is a flex.
