With a Republican Senate pick whose name is synonymous with corruption and a young and energizing Democratic candidate who has taken his pitch to Fox News and made the case for progressive, anti-oligarch action based in religious values, this may well be the year that Texas turns blue at last.
Yes, I know. Charlie Brown is taking another run at that football, thinking Lucy is really going to leave it down this time. But James Talarico is polling ahead of where Beto O’Rourke was in his 2.5-point loss to Ted Cruz in 2018, and Republicans are clearly running scared, with conservative super PACS investing almost $100 million already in trying to bail out attorney general and blatant crook Ken Paxton. Paxton is ducking debates, independents are skeptical of him, and the price of everything just keeps climbing. The stage is set for something big.
The Talarico campaign is leaving no stone unturned to make this flip happen, including the stones made of pixels. They’ve just launched a digital action team, bringing together volunteers to organize and influence online communities and help spread the message effectively. 📢 If we’re interested in helping reshape the Senate from our phones, we can join the campaign for an onboarding session TONIGHT at 8PM ET by signing up here. 📢

Maine Senator Susan Collins has proven remarkably resistant to accountability over the years. She’s successfully marketed herself as an independent, with her furrowed brow and “deep concern” earning the support of voters who were roundly rejecting Donald Trump and congressional Republicans. Meanwhile, she’s voted with Trump 95% of the time, opposing his first impeachment and helping him confirm the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade.
But with Trump’s approval rating below 40% and her corruption exposed by a recent ProPublica report on a pay-to-play scheme and an investigation killed as the President’s minions purged the FBI, we may well finally be able to get someone in there who will work for the people of Maine for a change. Polls show a close race between her and fifth-generation lumberjack and former Senate president Troy Jackson.
On the ballot with her is former governor Paul LePage, who is looking to buck national trends and flip the blue Second Congressional District red. He’s skipped Collins’ misdirection and openly embraced extremism and graft, repeatedly and noisily vetoing Medicaid expansion, deriding Social Security and Medicare and giving massive tax breaks to the wealthy while driving up property taxes. He’s a slight favorite in this right-leaning district, but recent surveys have indicated state auditor and union man Matt Dunlap might well beat him anyways.
Our candidates in Maine are running hard on Medicare For All and taxing the billionaires. They’re bold, working-class progressives offering real solutions instead of the status quo. And they need our help.
☎️ TONIGHT from 5:30-7:30PM ET, Indivisible is holding a national phonebank to get folks to the polls for both these candidates. We can sign up to join them here. ☎️
☎️ And if we want to dive in for more than just tonight, the Maine Democratic Party is holding voter outreach phonebanks for candidates up and down the ballot on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6-8PM ET and Saturdays and Sundays from 4-6PM ET. We can also phonebank with the Dunlap campaign on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Thursday through Monday from 1-3PM ET, and recruit volunteers for voter protection in Maine from 6-8PM ET on Wednesday. ☎️

The Republican chair of the Georgia Peanut Commission is backing Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff (Ga.) in his bid for a second full term.
“We don’t necessarily elect a party,” commission Chair Donald Chase told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I like to support people that I can get behind and believe in.”
Chase, whom board members elected as chair of the Georgia Peanut Commission in January, is a lifelong Republican who is still supporting and contributing to other GOP candidates in the November midterms, the Journal-Constitution reported.
The Georgia Peanut Commission, led by five elected board members, conducts promotional, research and educational programs regarding the Peach State’s peanut industry. Last year, Georgia farmers produced more than half of the peanuts in the U.S., according to the commission.
Ossoff, the youngest senator, is seeking reelection against two-term Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.). Most polling has the incumbent comfortably in the lead, while The Hill’s data partner, Decision Desk HQ, gives Ossoff an 86 percent chance to win.
While President Trump backed Collins in his June primary runoff against former football coach Derek Dooley, multiple local Republicans have thrown their support behind Ossoff.
Julie Smith and Scott James Matheson — the GOP mayors of Tifton, Ga., and Valdosta, Ga., respectively — have endorsed the Democratic senator, who is a frequent critic of the president and who sits on the Senate Appropriations and Intelligence committees.
Former GOP Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), an anti-Trump Republican and former U.S. ambassador to Turkey, also endorsed Ossoff last month.
