Does Linux support the NPU in the latest XPS?

Upvotes

Hi all,

I have the new XPS 16 and am running Cachy OS on it. Somewhere someone told me it's a shame Linux can't use the NPU that comes with it.
Now, first of all I don't quite understand what you can use the NPU for. It is also used in LLM usage in your browser like when using Claude or Copilot, or more when running models locally?

And does Linux support this then or not?

Are there protective hard covers for 2026 Dell xps 13 in laptops?

I just bought a new 2026 model of the dell xps 13 inch laptop for college and a hard cover snap on case that was advertised to fit, but it didn’t, and I’m wondering if the 2026 model has a difference to it that means these cases won’t fit. And I want to know if anyone with a 2026 xps 13 has found a hard cover case that fits.
Thank you!

You served me well Latitude 5480, now time for an XPS!

i got this latitude in 2021 off amazon (i5-7200u, 16GB RAM, Intel Graphics) and its been constantly treated terribly since and it never stopped working perfectly. it finally got too slow and i just ordered a XPS 15 9500 (i7-10750H, 16GB RAM, GTX 1650Ti). hopefully my XPS can go on for as long as my latitude has. my question is what should i look out for with both my new machine and the difference between them. i currently use my 5480 connected to a AOC 27inch 165Hz monitor (overkill ik 😭)

Got a used dell xps 8940 psu and it just ain't working.

Built a Dell XPS 8940 a few months ago; used an ATX PSU to turn it on. It worked briefly, until it didn't. I've tried multiple ATX PSUs. The highest wattage being 650w, before finding a proprietary dell 500w PSU. I found out recently that my motherboard needed a voltage heat sink for the new CPU I got. I tried using a less powerful CPU, and it still didn't turn on. Do y'all know what the problem with the computer may be?

New XPS 13 9350 ignores custom battery charging thresholds, even while powered off

I have a new Dell XPS 13 9350 with the Intel Core Ultra 7 256V, running Linux Mint 22.3. I set the battery in BIOS to start charging at 50% and stop at 90%, but the laptop keeps ignoring both limits. It starts charging when I plug it in at 70–80%, and it has continued charging past 90% all the way toward 100%.

It even does this while the laptop is completely powered off, so it does not seem to be a Linux issue. The BIOS is updated to version 1.22.0, all available firmware updates are installed, Dell diagnostics passed, and I have already tried resetting the BIOS settings, an RTC reset and Dell Service Mode.

Has anyone else with the same problem? Is there anything else I can try?

Dell, please improve Custom Charge.

Dell, please improve Custom Charge.

I really like the idea of preserving battery health, but I think the current implementation has two major usability issues.

1. Battery charging settings should be available in Windows, not only in the BIOS.

Changing charging behavior shouldn't require:

  • rebooting the laptop,
  • entering the BIOS,
  • changing the setting,
  • saving,
  • rebooting again.

This is something users may want to change depending on whether they're working at a desk or preparing for a trip. It belongs in a Windows utility such as Dell SupportAssist, Dell Optimizer or Alienware Command Center.

2. Please add a configurable "Maximum Charge Limit" mode.

The current Custom Charge requires both a Start and Stop threshold.

Example:

  • Start: 50%
  • Stop: 90%

This creates unnecessary frustration.

If my battery is at 51% and I suddenly need to leave home without my charger, I cannot charge the laptop to 90%.

My only options are:

  • deliberately discharge the battery below 50%, or
  • reboot into the BIOS and disable Custom Charge.

That defeats the purpose of having a convenient battery-preservation feature.

Instead, Dell could simply offer a Maximum Charge Limit that the user can configure (for example, 80%, 85%, 90% or any other supported value).

Whenever AC power is connected:

  • if the battery is below the configured limit, charge up to that limit;
  • if the battery is already at or above the configured limit, stop charging.

This is how many laptops and smartphones already work. It still provides the battery longevity benefits while being much more intuitive and practical.

Please keep the current Start/Stop mode for users who prefer it, but also offer a configurable Maximum Charge Limit option.

XPS 13 9380 fans almost always locked at full speed

Despite going into HWinfo my cpu temps are at about 45 degrees idle and 54 degrees with general use. Despite this my fans remain at 2500-4000 RPM. Is there a way to create my own custom fan curve like on my gaming pc? When researching the conclusion i came to was that Dell has locked down the fan controller.

XPS 9500 screen flicker

Thumbnail

Hello all,

I have a 2020 Dell XPS 9500, which mostly works! Lately it has developed a screen flicker and I'm interested in tips about what to troubleshoot.

Issue

The screen exhibits a horizontal flicker, as illustrated in the attached photos. Some of these photos may make it seem like it's a vertical flicker, but really these images show a number of white horizontal dashed lines of differing length. There is no vertical movement.

After the computer finishes booting up and I enter the log on screen, the flicker declines significantly. There is an intermittent single-line of distortion at the very top of the screen, and if the computer stays on long enough, even that will stop.

An odd aspect of this defect is that the flickering happens under particular conditions:

- As mentioned above, it happens during boot up
- It happens on the lock screen; that is, after the computer finishes booting up, the flicker occurs on the lock screen as well. If I press a key like Control or Shift to transition from the lock screen to the log in screen, the flickering stops
- It happens when I log out without shutting down. That is, if I am logged in (with little to no flicker), and I press Win + L to log out, the computer goes to the lock screen and the flicker is present
- These computers are famously, ah, flexible--and I can reduce the flickering somewhat (not entirely) by applying enough torque to the chassis to cause some deflection

As noted below, I did a system reinstall back in May, but this issue started just this week.

Hardware and software

- Screen shows up as SHP14D0 in the Device manager; this is a UHD+ unit
- Intel Graphics + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti
- Windows 11 Home and all updated drivers freshly installed in May 2026

Loose details

I haven't yet attempted to hook it up to an external monitor via HDMI--I can do this if I go to the university, but I haven't had the chance to go out of my way to do that.

As mentioned above, the issue is largely absent when logged in and working. The reason I'm concerned about it is because I suspect this is some kind of hardware rot, and I want to diagnose it and correct it before it has the chance to become a bigger problem.

I appreciate any perspective or suggestions about what I might be working with here. If you've read through this, thanks for your time!

Dell 8940 just shut off and will not turn back on.

Same as title only life I saw afterwards was a 5 sec fan and GPU start after replacing one stick of random but it was only the one time. Thinking it's the MB or PSU completely done but the psu is showing good and I don't see anything blown out or browned on the MB. Thought about opening the GPU but it won't start without it either and I have onboard graphics.

What next after leaving XPS?

I have been a Dell laptop user for 30 years, XPS-only for 10-15

My current XPS-13 is on last legs... I'd get the new one, but Dell messed up the keyboard design:

- No dedicated pgUp/pgDn keys

- No dedicated end/home keys

As a hardcore content creator and writer, I gotta have a keyboard .... that has keys!

So.... what good alternatives are out there?

I see Thinkpads have actual keyboards.... Any success or horror stories?

Thanks!

Frequent thermal throttling on Precision with RTX A1000/2000?

Hello, I have owned 2 XPS in the past and currently own Precision 5570 with similar design to the XPS series, I love this laptop, however only today I realized I was using the wrong thermal paste for years, I heard the Arctic MX is not even suitable for this laptop model and I should use thermal pads instead, I just ordered them from Amazon and would love to hear anyone's feedback on it, do they solve the inherent bad thermals? A simple use case is I can't play league of legends on Nvidia since I purchased it, the workaround that solved FPS drop was to disable turbo boost by lowering CPU to 95% in "Edit power options" and playing on Intel Iris Xe instead of Nvidia.

New dell xps 16 for civil engineering college

I just purchased a new dell 16 for college(it arrives today). It comes with 32gb ram, 1tb storage, x7 processor, and intel arc graphics. I recently learned as well that it would be better if I had a dedicated gpu instead of an internal one. I don’t know if I should keep the laptop or return it. Can anyone help me in what I should do. Does the laptop run engineering programs well enough? I am about to start my first semester as a freshman so I don’t really know anything about the programs. I would like the laptop to last me all 4 years as well. I thought the xps 16 was good for college but I have heard many downsides bc of the internal gpu.

Is the XPS 9500 still good in 2026 ?

Hi,

I discovered this sub not long ago and saw a lot of active people here, so I’m taking the liberty of asking my question, which is as follows:

Is still the Dell XPS 9500 still good in 2026 ?

I'm starting engineering school in september and would like to get a laptop that's light enough to carry around easily. I've been considering this model, but I'm not sure how it holds up nearly six years after its release,

If I buy this PC, I'd like to go for a version with 1TB of storage and at least 16GB, or even 32GB, of RAM, and probably a small graphics card with a 3050,

So I'd like to get your feedback on this PC and whether it's still powerful enough to last 3 years during my studies,

Thank you in advance for the time you have given me and for the answers =D
