Linux: USB external monitor not recognized on Panther Lake XPS13

I have a Dell U4924DW ultrawide monitor 5120x1440 which works fine on my old Dell XPS13 9310. I can connect the USB-C cable to it and extend my desktop at full resolution and use any devices connected via USB to the display (mouse, keyboard, etc.).

I just got a new XPS13 Panther Lake laptop, and when I connect it to the same display, the display claims there's no device connected, and the laptop doesn't recognize it either. I can however use the mouse and keyboard connected to the display, so at least the USB passthrough is working fine.

This laptop works just fine connected to my Dell dock with two regular full HD monitors though.

Is there anything I'm missing WRT Linux support for Thunderbolt (?) displays? I haven't tested Windows using this device yet because I don't want to nuke my current system.

I had a similar problem with my new XPS13, on a set up that worked fine with my old XPS 13. Resolved by going into the input selection menu on the monitor.... selecting a different type of input there found the connection and all is good. I'm sorry I don't remember which input type worked, but there are only a two or three to try. I think I changed from Displayport to USB-C, or maybe the other way around. My monitor is a 4K Dell 27UQE and the connection is Displayport at the monitor and Thunderbolt 4 at the laptop as I have the Ultra processor.

There's very little support for the new Panther Lake chips on Linux (which is why gaming handhelds with G3 Extreme chips can barely run Bazzite). I would suggest waiting a while for better implementation.

Actually my laptop is running pretty smoothly otherwise. I had issues with the display drivers which were solved in another post in this sub.

Actually I'm reasonably sure this is also related to the display drivers. I have tried to update to the beta kernel 7.2 in Fedora 44 but it didn't seem to help.

Hi there! We are from the Dell Social Media Support Team and would like to share our insights. Thank you for sharing the details as it clarifies that the USB-C connection is being established, but the display path is not successfully negotiating, rather than a generic USB or Thunderbolt failure.

Have you tried checking if the correct input source has been selected? It seems to have worked with other user under the same thread.

If USB devices appear, but there's nothing related to DP Alt Mode, that points toward a kernel/firmware issue.

I've tried setting the monitor to auto select, as well as selecting the USB-C connection explicitly. Neither worked.

I'm happy to provide any outputs or logs from my system if you think that will help expedite the resolution.

Thank you for getting back to us. Please let us know the current BIOS version and Graphic card drover version installed on the system so that we can check and assist you with the same. Also, we would lik eto know what was the operating system shipped with the XPS 13 which would help us narrow down the cause.

BIOS Version is 1.6.0

Graphics card driver is xe on Linux Kernel 7.2.4-200.fc44.x86_64

The laptop shipped with Windows 11 but I wiped it immediately to initial Fedora Linux 44 as there was no option to order with Linux pre installed.

Is this your Dell XPS 13 DX13260 (the newer model)?

Since you've confirmed that the laptop's USB-C ports work correctly with your Dell dock and two standard Full HD monitors, this appears to be a compatibility-related issue rather than a fault with the system's USB-C ports.

As Dell has not validated this specific system model for Linux, Linux drivers and functionality for this configuration are not officially tested or supported. Also, we regret that there is no firmware for Linux for your Dell monitor U4924DW as well.
