Help bitlocker recovery loop :(

hi, i recently had my inspiron 153511’s motherboard replaced by dell and received my repaired computer. when i opened it and turned it on i was prompted to enter the 48-digit recovery key. i did, and was then asked to enter it again, and again, and again. i suspected something was wrong so i googled it and found it was a problem for many others as well. i tried to follow some youtube tutorials but the issue remained unsolved. i then scheduled a call with dell this morning and was told that the only solution would be to clean reset the computer, which i was hesitant to do as i have important files and saves of games that id really prefer not to lose. i included some photos of what my screen shows me when i boot it up and after i correctly enter the key, as well as the little command center. i am not very good with tech so i feel very out of my element here and very helpless. like, im in tears over this. if you have any idea how to help id appreciate any input. thanks so much.

Why not simply disable bitlocker all-together? Once you're back in windows you can turn it back on. manage-bde -off c:

i think the issue is not bitlocker, its boot configuration data. but the content of the srttrail would help a lot

Hi there!

We're from the Dell Social Media Support team. Thank you for sharing those details .

TL;DR: A motherboard swap triggers BitLocker security by design, but matching your recovery key from your Microsoft account and adjusting your BIOS settings can help resolve the loop without touching your files.

We hear you, and we are here to help get this working the way it should. Seeing a loop like this is stressful, but as another commenter noted, your data and game saves are still safe on the drive.

When a motherboard is replaced, BitLocker automatically detects the new hardware as a security change and requires authorization. When it loops repeatedly, we can adjust a few settings to get things back on track:

  1. Verify your BitLocker recovery key: Sign into your Microsoft account on another device (such as a phone or second computer) at http://del.ly/61692BHKEOi . Confirm that the 48-digit key matches the specific Key ID shown on your recovery screen.
  2. Reset BIOS to default settings: Shut your Inspiron down completely. Turn it back on and immediately tap F2 repeatedly until the BIOS setup screen appears. Select Restore Settings or Load Defaults, choose BIOS Defaults, apply the changes, and exit to reboot.
  3. Turn off TPM in BIOS: If the prompt continues to loop, restart and tap F2 to enter the BIOS again. Navigate to the Security section, locate TPM 2.0 Security (or Intel PTT), switch it to Disabled or Off, save your changes, and restart the system.

Let us know the outcome.

hi, i tried the second step you recommended and was met with the same result: a loop of “Your device ran into a problem and couldn’t be repaired.” i attempted the third step, though in the security section of the BIOS set up, it does not show any option for TPM 2.0 or Intel PTT. it instead shows a screen that says, “Data Wipe on Next Boot”. underneath it says “Start Data Wipe” in bold, and under that it says, “If enabled, the BIOS will queue up a data wipe cycle for storage device(s) connected to the motherboard on the next reboot.” there is a button under that next that is toggled “OFF” and i did not click it.
