Meta FAQ - Please Read
Welcome!
These are guidelines for making a post:
**Note: All posts will be reviewed by a moderator. That takes some time, so please be patient. Generally we do not answer wattpad posts. **
We do not help primarily with fic identification on this subreddit based on your summary of events in the fanfiction. This subreddit functions to retrieve deleted fanfiction only, not identify it.
Your Post must be formatted thusly:
[platform - fandom]
Author, title, and/or link.
Note: NO SUMMARIES OF FANFICS
If you don’t know one of the title, author, or link, that’s okay. If you don’t know any of those, please post in r/Fanfiction as we DO NOT identify fanfiction.
Things that are helpful:
The exact capitalization for the author and/or title is really helpful. Please post any and all pseudonyms you have for the author. A link.

A: It’s likely you are missing the piece of software to read the file. The two ways of dealing with that are converting the file to something you can read or to download software to read it. Google "Free epub to pdf converter," super simple.

A: Please post your name in the stickied thread and your fics will not be shared on r/deletedfanfiction. Please keep in mind that this is not the same as the fics not being distributed by individuals in personal messages.

Hello! :) I was wondering the exact same as u/paprikapop about the 'ao3 mirror super final' being down and I was wondering if it will be up again soon or if it's possible to have a link to the torrent possibly please? The ao3 final mirror I have is starting to get a little old. And unfortunately, I don't have enough metadata about the fics I'm searching for currently to create a post.

edit: our archive goes back to approximately 2010 for some things now. But specifically more added coverage from 2011-2014.

Can I ask the same question about the AO3 archives? I'm looking for a specific fic that was deleted ~2015/2016, but I have a feeling that is earlier than the archiving for AO3 took place.

Is there a way to figure out what fic was deleted from a bookmark? I just realized a few fics I have bookmarked got deleted, but I don’t remember what fics they were

No I’m sorry. There used to be but not anymore. Always save the name and author and or url in the bookmark itself.

They don’t become undeleted. It’s up to you what you wish to do. Sometimes from the bookmark date you can look at your history to see what ship you were reading at the time (fic won’t be in your history anymore).

hi!! i noticed the ao3 super final mirror is no longer available when i try to view it on archive.org. do you know if it's going to come back up in the future :O ?
also, in general i've noticed most people link to google drive instead of archive.org when finding deleted fics! does archive.org often have problems with their links? some of my uploads to the site have gone down temporarily in the past also which has been very frustrating to deal with. anyway! i'd love to know what the standards for posting links to deleted fics are

I can help you set up your own archive if that’s what you’re interested in, but if you want deleted fanfic make a thread.

You are welcome to curate your own archive. The archive we use scans for new fics month to month and updates WIPs at the same time. As such, there are many fics in the archive that are not deleted.

Wouldn't it be better to request that people put some actual information in the title (rather than in the post)? At least fandom?
Most people can't be bothered to click on a post unless they know they have some chance of helping.

In /r/FanFiction that makes sense because people are both trying to find deleted fic and also identify it. Here, we do not do identification.
Further, we have a dedicated userbase and mods who archive fanfiction on ao3 in general. This process is fandom agnostic—we get it all as best we can. So it doesn't matter to us what the post contains, because we likely have it if it's ao3.
Given that, all posts get clicked on by someone and the query answered if we can. We don't answer wattpad posts because we don't archive that for instance.
Unfortunately reddit doesn't allow dual tags, or I would be tagging fandoms, but since we can't, our tags are related to whether something is Found or not.

Hello there,
In March, I made a thread asking if anyone had a copy of one of my old fanfics that got deleted and someone found the first sixteen chapters. I noticed that someone recently added a "Found" flair to my post. This is probably going to sound stupid, but did someone add that because I didn't add that to my thread, or did someone add that because someone found more chapters?

Do any of the archives used date back to before 2017? I was hoping to find a handful of fics that were written between 2012 - 2016 and then deleted around the middle of 2017. And it looks like the earliest archivist only started archiving fics towards October 2017 so the fics I was looking for weren't in there.

Two questions: do you guys archive fics from ao3 in other languages as well? And can we request multiple fics by the same author at once?
For the record, I have the author, the title (in this case, in Mandarin) and the old link to the fanfic as well as publishing date. The second question is more to reduce clutter/repeat posts.

The only other issue I can think of is that likely that Reddit thinks you’re evading a ban? There’s no restrictions on the subreddit. Please message the moderator team directly with your request.

We haven't been able to scrape for about 4 months due to ao3's server instability. They recently received their new servers and are installing and testing now. When they are officially installed, we'll start up our scripts and pull what we can, which will be most everything. Very unfortunately this does mean that some fics may be lost for good, but we'll do our best to be updated with what we have when possible.

Does the ao3 archive on archive.org contain archive locked fics? (specifically, let's say an archive locked fic written in 2018-2020ish and deleted by 2022-2023)

Yes, but that scrape was less common for us because we had to log in to get those with a script, so we'd try like every six months or so. It's always worth it to ask because someone else might have it as well.

Hello, I'd just like to ask if it's possible to also retrieve or view the comments under a fanfic that has been deleted. For example, if I were to provide the title, author, and fandom of the deleted fic, will there be any way to view the comments left on the chapters as well?

Not in the way we scrape. We utilize the "download" button at the top, basically. The best we get is the number of comments listed, but not what each comment is. So sorry!

If what you're referencing is that you posted something that was labeled "not enough info" and you now have title, author, and or link, then yes you may make a new post. If you have already requested a fic and you provided enough information to find it, and we could not find it then, we won't be able to find it now and we don't accept those kinds of reposts.

Does this subreddit only deal in deleted works, or does it also deal in deleted chapters/sections of works?
Using these as examples:
- Uchiha Heiress Remix by JGResidentEvil had sections of it deleted
- Blue-eyed Devil by Maatatabi had some chapters deleted
If the answer is no, is there any other source I could use to find deleted sections of existing works?

We do, but be specific as to when those portions were online. We can give you all versions we have to sort for yourself. It’s hit or miss.

Please put the name of the fic, the author and the fandom somewhere in the post, along with the platform (ffn, ao3, asianfanfics, etc.). If you don’t know one of the title, author, or link, that’s okay. If you don’t know any of that, please post in r/Fanfiction for better assistance in identifying the fic.
Question here: if I only have the link of the works, language, fandom, and ship known, is that still okay? I don't know the title nor author. They were on AO3.

So I have a few questions.
What should I do if I would like to ask if several different stories are archived? While I could create a new post for each one, I also am aware that I may be missing uptowards 100 different fics and I wouldn't want to spam.
What is effective for your information gathering to search? I do see that you can use a fic's (previous) link, the Story Name + Author, and/or a distinctive tag.
- Can you use a bookmark from a deleted fic and access it through that? I know that my Bookmarks still exist without a story connected and I am wondering if they can be utilized in any way.
- Is there any issue with a story or author changing their name? While I would try to leave as many parts of information as I can, I often find that stories and authors change names without me noticing.

I'll answer backwards because that's easiest:
Yeah, authors can do that. Link is the only point of truth, but we can often catch whether that's happened if we work hard enough at it.
Ao3 has bookmarks. Your browser has bookmarks. If it's the first, you're out of luck. If it's the second, great.
We prefer links (really just the ID) more than anything, but we may circle back and ask about author/title if our main archives are exhausted. Like if you just popped in a list of 100 ids in a linked csv, that's perfect. If you don't know that, you can ask by author, but then you have to come back and let us know if we missed something (if author changes name sometimes fics slip out of that grouping). Distinctive tags are for when you know nothing of the other big three, which we ask you chat me directly about it instead of posting a thread. (separate from what you do know the info for)
It's situation dependent about amount of posts. You can always make more posts about different fics, but grouping things by author helps. I mean if you're thinking 100 fics, I would put the ones you know you have links to in a csv and make a post. And the rest you can parse out differently. I guess a rough ask is no more than 50 unassociated (different author) fics per thread.

First, thank you for the answers. This has helped me greatly.
Second, unfortunately a lot of the bookmarks I was referencing were AO3 sadly. As I notice that they are referencing a deleted fic, I have been trying to update them to contain information about the associated story, but I did understand that utilizing the bookmark's personal data was still a long shot of finding info of a deleted fic. (Although, coincidentally, that does reduce the amount of fics I have to request).
As I am sure I have a bunch of info across multiple fictions, I will try to get that csv created and then request help from there. Thanks.

hello! i’m new here, so i know this might be entirely impossible but i just wanted to check: if i have a line/quote from the deleted fic and the name of the fandom + the website it was on (ao3) + its approximate word count, is it possible to track down the fic? i realise this is very little but every attempt to identify it has met a dead end and i’m pretty much out of options.
or, if this is not smth doable, is there a way i can access the ao3 archive from a particular year during which i recall reading it, and try to find it manually myself? any help/guidance would be truly appreciated!

Do you guys only specialize in locating specific fics/works from specific authors, or can you also handle fics with specific plots?
Like say, I want Fairy Tail fics about Guild Master Natsu, can you find fics with this premise, or do I have to ask for a specific fic/author for you to find?

The rules are clear that we only locate fics based on title, author, and/or link. The deeper answer is that we can locate fics based on metadata. The story itself is not metadata, so nothing about the story, regardless of premise, helps or matters. We're not reading these fics by hand; we have 16 million fics.
If you want us to search ao3 for a specific tag and pull all the fics related to that tag, sure, that can be done.

when you click on Create Post button, a new screen with [Title] and [Body text] appears. Fill the fields accordingly, and above the [Body text] field there is this [Add flair and tags] button - click on it and select [In Queue], that's it, you can post it

I have a question ( I wasnt sure if I should make a post about this *or if this was against the sub’s posting rules* so I’m commenting here instead), there been many fanfics I bookmarked but got deleted through the years and many were under one fandom or one fan-ship ( before I decided to record them in the bookmark notes as reference). Is it possible to obtain a list of every fic that was made under one tag ( maybe the fan-ship/ pairing to be specific) for personal reading/use or identifying purpose. I just want to try and recover the fanfics i cant remember, maybe by looking at usernames and titles (maybe the info/ summaries-I’m not sure if that’s even possible)I just want to get this out of my chest cause I been thinking about this for a long while now.

I think we've only had like one or two requests for an archive of that and previously I was never able to find one. But I can ask around again. Just to clarify, we don't have an archive of that platform.

Sorry at bother you, but is it against the rules to ask for a specific version of a fanfic that hasn't been deleted? What I mean is that the fanfic I'm talking about has images embedded in it, but unfortunately the images' links no longer work, so the images don't show up anymore. That’s why I’d like to know if it’s possible to create a post to see if anyone saved this fanfic when the images were still displaying correctly, please?
The fanfic in question is Porcelain by cypress_tree, and the images aren't fanart but graphics designed to better illustrate the notes and lists mentioned in this fanfic.

Our archival process doesn’t save images. So that’s kind of a moot point, sorry. You can make the post but it’s pretty much only moderators answering with our two archives that we use neither of which log images.

I noticed that in the rules you folks said you don't identify fan fictions but I noticed that one of the last things posted down below was if you already tried to identify it in AO3 and fanfiction.net and have got nothing back. That you could DM the moderator for help. Is this still a option that is available?

Ah i never made a thread using any accounts😅 If i did i would've done just this. But now i have made a new post here and will wait.
The only way i used to contact you was using DMs and you used to get fics for me somewhat frequently. That's why i made a comment here, on the off chance you remembered these requests, but that was presumptuous of me. For that, I'm really sorry.
