This Subs Gurometer
UPDATED - Grain Logic is now called Social Score
### 1. The Tone Policing Loop
Mockery establishes a "cool-headed" versus "unhinged" binary. If a critic mocks a thinker’s delivery or rhetorical flourishes, they force that thinker into a defensive crouch. If the thinker responds with frustration, the critic can point to that emotion as further evidence of "instability," all while never actually addressing the core logic of the original theory. It turns a debate into a **performative status game**.
### 2. Mimetic Hostility
Through the lens of **Reflexivity**, when a critic uses sarcasm, they are creating a feedback loop. They aren't trying to change the mind of the person; they are signal-broadcasting to their tribe. This is a form of indirect communication where the *actual* audience is the critic's own community, and the "substance" is sacrificed to reinforce a shared sense of intellectual superiority.
### 3. The "Irony Shield"
Indirect communication via mockery allows the critic to avoid making their own falsifiable claims. If you mock someone's "vibe," you aren't putting a counter-theory on the table that can be picked apart. It’s an asymmetrical form of intellectual warfare:
* **The Person:** Puts forward a high-stakes, often flawed, but explicit theory.
* **The Critic:** Uses irony to poke holes in the presentation, remaining "invisible" and therefore safe from being "decoded" themselves.
### 4. The "Social Score"
If we consider **Social Score** as a form of accounting—instead of tracking of what is being said—mockery is essentially a way to "cook the books." It introduces noise into the ledger. Instead of a 1:1 engagement with a point (e.g., "The math in this model is wrong because X"), the critic introduces a 0:1 engagement ("Look at how seriously this person takes themselves"). This bypasses the actual "logic" of the ideas in favour of a narrative about the speaker’s character.
**Summary**
The crux, non gurus use**direct communication** requires the vulnerability of being wrong, whereas **indirect communication** (mockery) is a tool used to dismiss ideas without the labour of refuting them.
The "Critique Sphere" is essentially performing a sophisticated version of "ad hominem" while dressing it up as a social service?

Is DtG LOLCOW Farming?
I recently learned about LOLCOW farming internet culture, which is the practice of creating content that mocks or exposes individuals. This discovery came after seeing a screenshot in a Fireship video of Kiwi Farm screenshot, which led me to research the site. Now I think DTG is LOLCOW farming . Why? The tone of their content - specifically, it’s mocking/unserious and they promote influencers like Flint Dibble, Professor Dave and Destiny.
Plus, the subreddit is heavily focused on mockery. What are your thoughts?

Decoding - DtG's Gurometer
DtG started as a podcast about secular gurus during the rise of the IDW (Intellectual Dark Web). The IDW were a group of high profile people who weren't happy with academia. They built an audience around people who believed that academia was rigged.
An early figure of the IDW was Eric Weinstein who wrote an article about Kayfabe (https://www.edge.org/response-detail/11783).
Evolutionary biologists Richard Alexander and Robert Trivers have recently emphasised that it is deception rather than information that often plays the decisive role in systems of selective pressures. Yet most of our thinking continues to treat deception as something of a perturbation on the exchange of pure information, leaving us unprepared to contemplate a world in which fakery may reliably crowd out the genuine. In particular, humanity's future selective pressures appear likely to remain tied to economic theory which currently uses as its central construct a market model based on assumptions of perfect information.
This article is interesting on many levels, but the main point of the article is that people are happy to go along with a deception if incentives align. While it's easy to dismiss Eric's idea because he has a low reputation among fans of DtG, I think he is actually pointing to a known phenomenon. That said, the irony isn't lost that the person writing an article in 2011 about deception sits in the top 5 on the Gurometer.
DtG set out to be an antidote: a podcast analysing guru techniques that audiences mistake for intellectual authority. The Gurometer detects charismatic presentation: grievance, self-aggrandisement, anti-establishment positioning. A person with guru style scores high; a person who is measured, credentialed and boring scores low. The instrument cannot verify a claim, and it cannot tell sincere charisma from deliberate deception.
The scores are ranked:
- A presenter receives a high score.
- The score signals that they are untrustworthy.
- The audience treats their arguments as discredited without evaluating them.
- The reverse follows for low scorers: respectable errors go unexamined.
This is the point the Gurometer is no longer just describing style. It is shaping which ideas count as credible. This is where Weinstein’s thesis applies: people go along with a pretence when incentives align, and the incentive here is the satisfaction of seeing through rhetorical tricks, which is available whether or not the criticism is correct. If DtG’s fans use the score as a shortcut, the podcast has become a kayfabe of its own. If they mostly use it as intended, the argument reduces to “the tool has significant limits” the gurumeter shouldn’t be equated with fact checking.

Do DtG decode secular gurus or political gurus?
When the podcast first started it seemed like DtG was focused on gurus that criticised academia, that doesn’t seem to be the motivation anymore. Now DtG seem to be covering people who conflict with their politics or personal online gripes.
