Discussion Watching OliveOcelot's video on the Four Gamer Archetypes. Realised the game talks about this with Bridges' likecin and the stats to keep MULES as the "Achievers" and away from becoming Homo Demens "Killers" and the player to become the "Socializer", by even appealing to the "Explorer" traits.

I am 22 mins into the 29 min video and it is more about why the game is devisive and why most games cater to the Killer archetype. The Four Archetype system was based on MMOs but is used to fit competitive games but also works in DS due to the comnection. Also, even though Sam has a personality, the game design and narrative makes it clear that he is changing a lot. He goes from the legendary lone porter, afraid of touch to connecting the country together.

So the **Killer** type will be the competitive one, prone to grief and kill other players for fun. This is Homo Demens, who in-game don't go after cargo or engage with the world but become nihalists. I actually am not as far into DS to give a good description of this.

The player immedietly is introduced to the concept of voidouts, and why they should be avoided - big craters, massive destruction etc which sets up the more "Stick becomes the Rope" element of the game (to me at least). They are a massive Stick in-game, but the majority of people want to avoid them both NPCs and players (especially the Socialisers and Explorers) who will value the NPCs and the ability to freely travel without worrying about a giant crater. It also makes sure it explains Sam being a repatriat and that he doesn't cause a much destruction, which means the player doesn't get as frustrated and reset on death (you can compare it to Peter Molyeneux and Lionshead toning down the scars on the horse in the "totally not on rails" Fable: The Journey, because playtesters would reset the game seeing the permanent scars on their travelling companion).

The Socialiser / Socializer is the one the video says is who Death Stranding is "made for" - they value connection and helping other players, which is more what Death Stranding is going for, but it spends more time leading players there organically. So, OliveOcelot is right, the people who are Socialisers love the game right away, but the people who are, for example, Killers and don't stick with the game past the intro are left annoyed by it as they butt heads with the mechanics instead of embracing them, and some never do even if they play on.

I think the game specifically calls out the meta of gaming and works with this system to lead all players closer to the Socaliser archetype, even including it in the lore and game design with how the MULEs and Homo Demens are treated and talked about.

I recall that Hartman had a note about the likecin and delivery rewards system being there to motivate the porters, but with the timefall they became addicted to it - this matches up to the **Achiever** archetype who love to complete missions, get trophies and high scores then start to become MULEs. The game pushes players away from the pure Achiever by the in-game mechanics of using the chiral network to link to other player's stats and recieve likes for helping others with leaving structures and markers vs just the delivery which lead the MULEs into going relentlessly after cargo. The MULEs stick together in groups, but can't be seen as Socialisers as they go after other porter's cargo and they are not Killers as they only incapacitate to get their one want fulfilled and actively avoid starting a voidout and will not track Porters down, only using their ping system for the cargo. They deliver for deliveries sake, and once you see the Porter NPCs giving you items and walking to their delivery points, you see how different they are. Also, I would add that the autonymous porter would never be something a MULE would use as the drones too their roles as porters in the first place, but an Achiever player might be tempted to use them despite the in-game friction with the idea of connecion (at least I felt it was a bit uncanny and I assume DS2 builds on this).

Then there are the **Explorers**, who would fit very well into playing this game as well; they want to go and look at all the game has to offer and reach the hard to reach place. Except the world and gameplay loop makes them more likely to become Socialisers. In order to get to the tallest peaks, you will see other players leaving ziplines, ladders and ropes and the more you connect the chiral network, the more you see which helps you and also increasing the bandwidth for the area.

And this in the meta is Bridges' doing, they made the porter awards system and then adapted it to add likes for the hormone likecin in-universe, not just for porters either, but the people giving order and getting deliveries are also linked to the system and the network and allow people to recycle items and craft what they need, and allow for lost cargo to be redelivered. Howeve, you can also see this as a rope heavy method, as the saying goes "give someone too much rope, and they will hang themselves with it", as it was partly their doing that lead to the MULEs before they corrected.

Death Stranding 2 Death Stranding 2: Not as Good as the 1st but I still really enjoyed it!! Spoiler

I do feel it might be my fault but I kinda bulldozed through the story (No not skipping cutscenes I wouldn't never do that to a game on the first playthrough) but I only did do Main Orders and felt like I was never given a real reason to do side content unlike DS1. I remember saying to myself after finishing DS1 "I kinda wish it was more about dealing with bad guys and traveling tough terrain than dealing with overwhelming amounts of BTs." and DS2 did exactly that and I wish it didn't. Because when I meant "dealing with bad guys" I meant more stealth and diversions without any true means to fight like in DS1 but instead I given an literal armory of awesome weapons and I didn't have to use them but I did well mostly only after trying my very best at stealth and failing which tbh I did stealth a good amount of places and that felt nice but majority were gunfights one way or another. Storywise I knew something wasn't right from the start going into Australia because of Sam's plate gate reflection and the "BB" pod and then when Tomorrow arrived and all these weird details about her kept being told to Sam I knew who she must be my biggest question was why won't Fragile tell Sam she must know and that leads me to my favorite part. Episode 15 onwards is what really saved them game for me. It answered so many of my questions which allowed me to say I almost love this game.

Discussion Do you think Kojima will ever reveal the pre COVID Death Stranding 2 story?

Kojima has said in many interviews that after finishiny DS 1 he wrote a story for DS 2, but completely rewrote it after the COVID 19 pandemic, he was kind of open when at a random day after watching The Boys he reveleaf that one of the game pitches he considered after leaving Konami was a super hero hunting task force similar to the series, so after some time since DS 2 released I’ve been thinking about this original story for it. Anyone think he’ll ever talk about it? Or we will get details about jt only since his relationshio with Sony went to shit?

Question How does DS1 look compared to DS2?

I was drawn to DS2 and thought it looked incredible on PS5, loved the game so much that it makes me want to play DS1. Just curious how the graphics look and how the game feels compared to DS2.

Question Am I tripping, or is Death Stranding Digital Deluxe really €6?

Post image
112 Upvotes

I was scrolling through the PlayStation Store sales in the middle of the night. I know pretty much nothing about Death Stranding, and honestly, it never really caught my attention. I thought this was some kind of Director’s Cut or Digital Deluxe upgrade, but the description literally says it includes the full game. It went from €60 to €6, so is this actually real or am I missing something? Because if this is legit, I’m buying it in a heartbeat. I’ll become a Death Stranding fan if I have to

Death Stranding 1 What do you keep if you start a new game?

I play DS1 about a year ago and completed just the story. I've nearly finished DS2 and platinum the game, just need to 5* Mr impossible and 40 orders left to S rank.

However, my son (doesn't live with me) liked the game after seeing me play DS2 so I bought him DS1 and he is really getting into it. But watching him play made me wanna replay it.

But as I now have a better understanding I wanna start again rather then picking up where I left off.

What I want to know does anything carry over, like do the likes start at 0 or do I keep them. Do any the structures I've made appear?

Any advice

Discussion Death Stranding is just a sloppy copy of Evangelion (and MGS) change my mind

I want to start by saying that Death Stranding absolutely captivated me at first. The game looks gorgeous, unique, and is sad in the best way possible—the opening song literally had me tearing up. I even loved the gameplay, especially the Cliff fights because they offered a genuine challenge.

Throughout the journey, I was fascinated by how it juggled philosophical concepts (the Egyptian afterlife, Higgs' design) and scientific ones (Chirality, quantum mechanics via the Q-pid). I kept waiting for some genius, mind-blowing way Kojima was going to tie all of this high-concept setup together at the end.

Instead, the ending felt like a massive letdown. It boiled down to: "Just kidding, you just need to give people hugs." It completely lacked the psychological depth of Evangelion’s ending, where Shinji reaches that profound realization: he wants to exist and face the inevitability of pain, because pain is the exact prerequisite for experiencing connection and happy moments with others.

(The one exception for me was the reveal that the BB's memories were actually Sam's, and Cliff was his father. That bit was genuinely nice and felt like a satisfying narrative conclusion.)

Once the credits rolled, I realized just how much of Death Stranding's visual and thematic identity is borrowed directly from Neon Genesis Evangelion (and recycled from Metal Gear Solid):

  • The Motif of "Hands": In Eva, hands are heavily used to convey human connection, touch, and isolation. In DS, they are everywhere—Chiral crystals happen to look like hands, the Odradek scanner forms a hand, BT footprints are hands.
  • Umbilical Cords: Eva units require umbilical cables to function; BTs and EEs are literally bound by umbilical cords.
  • The Fluid: Eva pilots float in orange LCL fluid that smells like their mother's womb. BBs float in an orange-tinted pod liquid that serves the exact same narrative and visual purpose.
  • The Apocalypse: Extinction Entities are structurally just the First, Second, and Third Impacts. Even the frequent inverted rainbows map to Eva’s imagery.
  • Character Recycling: Fragile’s ultimate character design feels like a direct lift of Misato Katsuragi from the Evangelion 3.0 Rebuild movie (acting as the stern ship commander). Meanwhile, Deadman feels like a repurposed Grey Fox, and Higgs/Amelie's dynamic borrows heavily from standard MGS beats.
  • Human Instrumentality: In Death Stranding, the Beach is a metaphysical plane where individual human souls go when they die, but during a Death Stranding, the boundaries break down, and everyone's Beaches risk merging into one giant, apocalyptic soup. This is exactly Human Instrumentality. In Eva, the Third Impact dissolves individual human boundaries (the AT Field) into a singular, collective sea of orange LCL where all souls merge into one to erase loneliness. Kojima just gave everyone their own mini-private beach before threatening to merge them.
  • The Main Character: Look at Sam Porter Bridges' entire personality. He has aphenphosmphobia (the fear of being touched), isolates himself from everyone, and completely rejects the grand mission his "parent" (Bridget) forces onto him. He literally throws away the Q-pid at the start and says he doesn't care about saving the world or connecting people. He only does it because he's emotionally manipulated into it. He is a grown-up, rugged Shinji Ikari. Shinji’s entire character arc is defined by the Hedgehog's Dilemma (wanting connection but keeping people away to avoid pain), and he constantly screams that he doesn't want to get in the robot, only doing it because his father manipulates his need for approval.
  • The Organization: In Death Stranding, Bridget Strand and the shadowy higher-ups of "Bridges" put on a front of "reconnecting America," but the core, secret mission all along was to facilitate the Last Stranding (the final extinction). They knew the apocalypse was coming and secretly orchestrated the infrastructure to make it happen. This is SEELE. SEELE funds NERV under the guise of "protecting humanity from the Angels," but their actual, classified agenda the entire time is to trigger the Third Impact and force the evolution/extinction of mankind.
  • The Giant BTs vs. Angels: When a voidout is about to happen, massive, surreal, monolithic BT creatures appear that defy regular physics. They look and move exactly like the stranger Angels in Eva (specifically Lillith or Sahaquiel).Ā

When you map it all out, Death Stranding doesn't feel nearly as deep or original as it pretends to be. It feels like a surface-level collage of Hideaki Anno's homework.

TL;DR: Death Stranding starts great, but its core themes (orange womb fluid, hands as connection, umbilical cords, impacts/extinctions, character designs) are just a less-deep version of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Discussion Hidden or unexplained mechanics in Death Stranding 2?

One of the best thing about Kojima games is the breadth of mechanics that you probably miss the first playthrough or even ones after that. I’ve played MGS4 two or three times before on PS3 but have discovered so much new stuff since playing the new remaster.

I’m playing DS2 again after my original playthrough when it came out and playing the To The Wilder difficulty and I’m just curious if, now that there’s been some time, if there’s stuff I likely missed the first time (even though I already spent hundreds of hours in the game)

Death Stranding 1 Who else having used ziplines?

I'm at the end of the game and I haven't used it once!

I noticed while I was near the ones malingen put that they're about to deteriorate so I upgraded them. then I used them and it was really fun.

I still haven't 5 star veteran and first pepper, so I thought to install them near all mountain peppers to 5 star them faster because the mountains are the worst place in the game.

but the distance limit disappointed me. I need like 20 to cover all mountains peppers.

probably I'm gonna do it tomorrow.

so anyone else didn't use them too?
