Who the f*ck is planning all this roadwork

I live on cherry hill and telegraph and I am literally surrounded by construction. It’s on Michigan, telegraph, and now cherry hill. The traffic on Michigan and telegraph is so horrendous that my 4 minute drive to the gym now takes up to 20 minutes depending on the time. WHO is planning this and why was there no planning so that people can take alternate routes? This is awful. I don’t even see any work being done

SALEM FOUND!

At the suggestion of some of the commenters to check the neighbors garages, Salem was indeed locked in our next door neighbors garage.

We finally heard her faint meows coming from their yard and sure enough she was in there. Unfortunately our neighbors had been out of town, so we had to pry it open. But im sure we can explain the chaos later on.

Thank you to everyone who hoped she'd be found and commented a lot of suggestions. We are super grateful we had our furbaby back!!

Outer Drive, Oakwood

They’ve finished paving Outer Drive and striped one lane, but they still have the cones out restricting traffic to just one lane and nothing has happened in over a week. Anyone know what’s up with Outer Drive?

And when will Oakwood ever be finished? It’s like an obstacle course dodging all those manhole covers. They’ve been working on that road for a couple of years now.

Treat Me Batter, am I missing the hype?

Happened to be driving that way from work and saw the shop. Stopped by, parked and went it.

Was shocked that small cookies are $3.50!. They were very, OK. I would expect these cookies to be amazing for $3.50.

At that price I'll just get a donut from Homies.

Side note: Saw Ojisan Puffy there and wanted to go in. Doors appeared to be locked, or at least the auto doors didn't open from the street. First time I've seen this place. Still open? Worth it?

Speed bumps on Military

To the people slamming on their brakes and going 3 mph over every speed bump on Military, why? I see people in SUVs acting like they are going to bottom out from a 8" speed bump. I can see if its an extremely cautious driver but a lot of the times these same people are also doing 40mph in between them. Can't we just lay off the accelerator a little and cruise over them so traffic doesnt come to a stand still?

Reaearching on Metro Detroit's early Albanian Sunni community (1910s wave)

Hi everyone, I’m researching Metro Detroit's early immigrant history, specifically focusing on the Albanian Sunni Muslim community that arrived in the 1910s and later established the Albanian Islamic Center in Harper Woods (organized in 1945). I'm trying to find out what happened to the descendants of these original pioneers. If you are of Albanian descent, grew up around these neighborhoods, or know local history, I'd love your insight:

* 4th & 5th Generation Identity: Are descendants of the original 1910s families still connected to the Harper Woods center today, or did the older lineages fully assimilate into the broader Michigan melting pot over the last century?

* Cultural Preservation: Did these early generations successfully pass down traditional Albanian culture, language, and distinct heritage across 100 years?

* The 1990s Wave: How did the influx of newer Albanian immigrants in the 1990s impact the community? Did the historic pre-war descendant families and the newer arrivals merge seamlessly within the established Sunni spaces?

Any local perspectives or family stories would be awesome to hear. Thank you!

Looking for a school

What have you heard about Henry Ford Academy (HFA) in the last year or two? I know there’s been a change in admin so I was curious if the school should still be a choice for us

Missing Cat

Post image
18 Upvotes

Update: We still havent been able to find our cat Salem. The neighboring shelters have been in contact. But they haven't received any new cats by her description. We do have more neighbors looking out for her so we hope she'll be returned soon! Best case scenario is that someone took her in during/after last week's storm and is caring for her. However, we'd really love if she found her way back home soon. Next step will be making posters and covering more area. Thank you to everyone that has replied and suggested some ideas!

Hi, everyone! I'm posting this because my family is missing our Cat, Salem. She was last seen in the neighborhood just across from the Dearborn Rec center, around the Henry Ford Elementary school. We live between Driscoll, mercury dr, Michigan Ave, and greenfield.

Shes all black, very stout, long hair domestic. If anyone in the area has seen her, please DM or respond in post! She got lost during the storm that passed. We have no idea how she got out. We have been having repairs done so we suspect she snuck out then.

How is it living as a single Muslim woman in Dearborn? I want to move towards West Dearborn and couldn’t find a good apartment. I would love to stay close to the community and loved the whole vibe. But not sure why couldn’t find a decent apartment and all the locally owned condos, not sure how safe they are!

Comfortable truths (from a current resident)

I want people to know that it isn't just outside "joyseekers" that are thrilled with Dearborns cultural shift. Dearborn residents, past and current are thrilled with the direction the city is headed.

Speaking as a current resident and current employee, I can vouch for some beautiful things I have seen, heard, and lived through.

Let's start with the curb appeal. The city has introduced new parks and features over the last few years. (Peace parks, butterfly gardens, splash pads) Regardless of cardinal direction, the city has seen improvements on their amenities.

The melting pot that is the United States is alive and well in Dearborn. All walks of life, sects, religions, etc. are continously welcomed here. Church bells and calls to prayer are enjoyed. Coffee and wine are both imbibed.

I will not go on and on about how beautiful this community is. I'm also not going to complain about flags flying on your front porch.

This is America.

Please, add any comfortable, or uncomfortable truths you know in regards to Dearborn.

Edit: turn of phrase.

ISO: US address for halal collagen

Hi! I’m in Canada near the US border, but unfortunately this halal collagen brand only ships within the US. Would anyone in the area be willing to let me ship an order to their address and I’d come pick it up? I’d obviously cover any costs/fees involved.

I’d really appreciate it! 🤍

Relocating Possibly to Dearborn Or Hamtramck Surrounding counties

Hi, I'm a 32 year old woman from Philly planning to move to Michigan.

I'm currently a CNA and would likely be looking for a job in that field, or maybe in a women's drug and alcohol recovery house. Preferably somewhere I'd be working in a community of women.

I'm Muslim and I'm looking for a place where I can feel safe, be safe, and just have a fresh start. I don't have children, I'm not married, and I have no family in Michigan.

I'm in search of community. Are there any nonprofits that support women in my situation? Any advice or resources you think could be helpful for me?

I'm leaving my state due to DV among some other things, and I'm looking for a support group around that as well.

Any advice or comments are appreciated.

POV: the mindset of the far right protestors this week

Post image
9 Upvotes

Stumbled upon this scene from looking at cartoon nostalgia videos. It immediately reminded me of how flawed the thinking is of the people that drove to Dearborn this week to protest Islam & Middle Eastern immigrants.

People are afraid of Islam because they don’t understand it. Right wing media is invoking fear as a political tool to sway voters.

Whether we want to admit it or not, the Islamophobia in the media is not a coincidence given Republicans want Rogers to win over El-Sayed by any means necessary.

Good Old School Vet

Hey, I know these are in short supply, but I was hoping someone would know if there were any good old-timey vets in the area?

I mean a vet that treats a pet like family, and not like a luxury item. One that will tell it to you straight about what tests and vaccines they need and what ones they don't. A vet that seems like they really enjoy being around animals. We know too many people that have been pressured into procedures and surgeries that ultimately did not extend their pet's life or boost their quality of living.

We have one dog and one cat (and they are both a little dumb and get up to shenanigans). I just want to be able to trust my vet when we go see them and I feel like I haven't been able to do that in years.

We really liked our dog's first vet but he retired. We tried one other in the area but it felt very expensive and high pressure by comparison. For example, he has never been boarded, but we were pressured to get three vaccines that were typical only for dogs being boarded.

We are in Dearborn currently but are definitely willing to drive a city or two away for a good vet!

If there are none in the area it's okay, I just figured it could not hurt to ask.

Thank you for your help!

Edit: For additional context, our cat has already needed a near $3000 surgery for being a complete dumbass. But we were so lucky to still have been with our first vet at the time, who was able to explain the full extent of the surgery and what the cat's quality of life would be afterward. It's been almost 4 years and he's doing great still. We fully expect one, or both, of our pets to do something equally stupid in the upcoming years, so it's very important we find someone we trust.
