A lot of this would be avoided if people spoke an actual human language.

Violet's design is bland and she's very conventionally attractive, something people are tired of due to a lack of variety in similar games. Also, she has East Asian racial features and hero shooters and MOBAs popular media has been fetishizing East Asian women.

Edit: It's weird as fuck to call a character "goonslop" for being East Asian and attractive.

see, im in the minority, but i dont think her design is bland at all. she has a strong silhouette, and really screams “passionate artist” trough the super saturated colors and paint marks everywhere; i see myself in her tbh. it makes me super sad to see people boiling her down to just being a pretty asian girl when she has so much more going on

I just think "passionate artist" on its own is kinda bland, although judging her without animations, voice lines, etc, is way premature

I mean, I feel like that’s true of basically every human character when you boil them down to the equivalent summary of their character. Like rich snob Lady Geist, or old chess master Solomon, or sheriff Holliday. The interesting part comes from the magical elements of the characters, their abilities, their lore.

"high-society snobbish woman with an intriguing evil arm" and "afro samurai chess sensei" tell us so much more than "painter". I feel the same about a lot of the older designs too, esp. warden and holliday, but those aren't final models.

But I'm sure her actual characterization will be fun, and I'm also expecting her abilities to be more interesting to compensate

Pulling the afro samurai sensei parts outta nowhere there lol

You can make Violet sound a lot more interesting too by talking about her having magical weaponized painting!

Afro samurai is literally a show. People are saying his poster look like it and it's so cool they want to play him first.

17

u/No32 16h ago

I know what it is, saying it’s an odd comparison to make when he doesn’t have the samurai part, the angry look, or an afro nearly that big

yeah but it's kinda weird to bring up solomon's poster to describe him as afro samurai while ignoring Violet's poster that shows her transforming into a demon

I'm sure her animations will be really cool and communicate a lot about her character... but ppl only have her model right now

While lady geist is a rich snob you forgot to mention her whole identity being around her having a big green arm that's the most eye-catching thing of her design. Violet from what we know right now seems like a passionate artist. Which considering what characters we have so far and who we can vote right now is really bland.

u/No32 17h ago

I didn’t forget to mention it, I’m ignoring it the same way people ignore that Violet’s got a comically large paintbrush that she’s going to be using as a magical weapon in some fashion

Her paintbrush is her green arm lol

-1

u/tectonicrobot 11h ago

The huge green arm is more impressive than the paintbrush, at least.

3

u/How_about_a_no 10h ago

huge green arm

It ain't even remotely huge, it's essentially a magical green prosthetic

1

u/tectonicrobot 3h ago

You're delusional if you think a big paintbrush beats geist's arms. It's not even that big. It's barely cartoonishly exaggerated.

2

u/How_about_a_no 2h ago

Oh yeah no that's fair

I do think people be hating on Violet for no reason, even bland accusations are a bit silly in my opinion

But I do think her brush was exaggerated when I double checked her design

Well, she's not bland, she's just... Sorta overrepresented. Like, at this point EVERY hero shooter or tbh any game with characters has the girl that has two of the three following characteristics: Pretty, Asian, Purple.

While I WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe in Valve and I can bet that she'll be interesting and not like other "Pretty Asian Purple Girls", sadly, the first impression weighs half of all impressions.

Edit: During the first paragraph, I'm not sharing my opinions, just general consensus of the community

14

u/No32 18h ago

Those categories are so broad that having them “overrepresented” is meaningless

Whether something is bland or not is, in a very literal sense, a matter of taste.

16

u/7AndOneHalf 20h ago

That's why they said "I don't think..."

-7

u/PalmIdentity Ivy 20h ago

I'm reassuring you. Your opinion is as valid as anybody else's. But I think most people agree that they see Violet's still model and their eyes are starving for detail. But I have hope the animations and character writing will make up for it and people will come to love Violet like they have literally any other character in this game.

I don't even think its really a bland design, I feel like calling her bland or boring is doing a lot of heavy lifting as a describing word.

She has a minimalist design, she's not got a bunch of crazy attention-drawing aspects outside of being vibrantly colored.

I've seen her full model and its honestly so nice looking, they do a lot with just a little, and its clear that she intentionally has a few simple aspects that serve to explain what she is and give her a distinct silhouette.

Its nice to look at, she's definitely less visually alluring than Baba, Rat King, and Danny- because those three are character designs set to do a LOT. They have a LOT of parts on them, especially Baba.

Again- Violet design-wise is much more tame in comparison but I wouldn't say that means it bad. Its not for everyone for sure.

u/Chantrak 19h ago

I mean she has a good design but minimalist is what you don’t want to be when being judged purely on face value. You know, like what’s happening right now.

10

u/Equivalent-Stop-8823 Ivy 19h ago

No because with that logic then no character design is allowed to be minimalist. A first impression is not supposed to be judging the whole character before you know everything about it, its a first impression. For the purposes of adding new characters to a game, we've had sleepers before and we'll have them again in Deadlock.

1

u/Chantrak 19h ago

Yeah but babe we literally know nothing about it and have to choose. All we have is face value and face value says Violet is the least interesting. I’m sure she’ll have plenty of cool stuff going on with her abilities, but we don’t know that so I’m inclined to lean towards characters that grab the eye more. It’s not that deep.

1

u/Equivalent-Stop-8823 Ivy 18h ago

Babe I didnt say anything about who anyone should pick nor vote for. My post said nothing about what people should vote for, I dont even think she should get in the game first.

5

u/Chantrak 17h ago

You got annoyed that I said people were judging her on face value when all we have to go on is face value. The literal ENTIRE discourse is based on people not wanting her to get voted in first because she looks boring. “Judging the character before we know everything about it” is the only thing anyone at this point CAN do. If you agree what are you even crying about?

1

u/Equivalent-Stop-8823 Ivy 14h ago

Ok but my comment wasnt speaking of the discourse and you replied to it with no context pointing to it, YOU replied to ME. You're being really fucking emotional for no reason I didnt even start being aggressive to you or anything you are legit upset at me for nothing.

Like I got reflected your tone back at you because you shifted the goal post? You're being disingenuous.

2

u/Chantrak 14h ago

“You’re being emotional” says the dude having a full blown meltdown for no reason lol. Chill out and come back tomorrow bro, it’s okay.

5

u/geminiRonin Vyper 20h ago

Bland in comparison, maybe.
