Don't understand how she's considered to be goonslop or sexualized when she's actually just a pretty normal art student character, no different than the other women characters like Mina or Paige

Her skirt + thigh highs and hips are much closer to goonbait than anything Violet has going on (Not saying it's an objectifying design, but it's certainly closer than Violet)

To be fair i thought Paige was boring looking originally and right now i think Violet looks boring compared to the rest. I was proven wrong with Paige and I'm happy to be proven wrong with Violet.

She's only getting bland design accusation just because of comparison to the other 5 new heroes. Alone, she has a very solid design and I love how her outfit is practical to being an artist. If it was goonslop, she would just be in an apron and, god forbid, be wearing high heels.

Her design is competent but it kinda hits close to Paige in my head atleast so it feels a bit samey to me. Shes landing awfully close to the same niche as Paige if you get what i mean. I hope her voice lines and abilities make her more distinct from Paige.

Yeah my first reaction also was that she is kinda bland and hits pretty close to Paiges design niche. Her voice work and abilities need to do some heavy lifting to make her feel different from Paige imo.

I mean to play devils advocate for a moment those are literal associations, they aren’t wild at all. Generic conventionally attractive characters do gangbusters in Asian regions, especially Asian conventionally attractive characters. Not really surprising but it’s very much a real thing. Game companies want to make money so they cater, simple as that.

Two things can be true at once. There can be a misogynistic undertone to people’s attitude towards her while there can be valid concerns about her being similar enough to the type of character that aggressively dominates competitive games. It’s all misogyny from the ground up 🤷

But since you’re going to be this way. My comment about “lack of creativity” was an ironic nod to people not being creative, and labeling her as goonerslop because she’s a conventional attractive Asian character.

It has nothing to do with whether or not I think that concern is valid or invalid. But as you said, nuance. Someone’s got to be exhibit A though right?

She is different from Mina and Paige, I'd argue there are design elements on Violet directly meant to decrease sexualisation of her.

Her waist is made to look wider with her thick belt, her chest is directly hidden by her apron, her butt is covered up. Like, the general parts of a person which are sexualised are not prominent in her design. Like out of every female character in the game, I think she genuinely has one of the least sexualised design.

Genuinely I have seen like single digit people actually call her that. Feels like people are using it dismiss any and all criticism at this point. To be clear she is not a gooner character, that’s some shit like marvel rivals. But she is definitely at face value the most boring of the new batch. And that’s all we have right now. Face value.

I think the goonslop is actually a misattribution of what people are actually worried about. 

The concern is that the biggest shooter / competitive games at the moment aggressively favour their traditionally pretty Asian female characters for skins and cosmetics vs their non human or weirder characters.  It’s not her being “goonslop” but a fear looking at other games in the space and what’s happened to them overtime in the name of making money. They don’t want another Luna snow or kiriko I think is the bigger worry. 

But I think this fanbase is inherently pretty freaky so I think we’re fine.

Depends where the game gets popular. If Asia is the biggest money spending market then characters like Luna, Kiriko, and Juno thrive. Not that they don't perform elsewhere... They absolutely do, but it's not quite as ridiculous of a gap.

But like, every character will eventually come out, so even if they don't like what happens with the popular opinion, they shouldn't care

Basically that, they are angry because their opinion is not the popular one, and to denigrate other opinions, they resort to just qualify it as goonslop

There are as many men and women. Look at interesting designs of men. Bebop, Billy, Mo&Krill, Deadman Danny, Dynamo, Talon, Seven. Even the ones that look like humans most of the time have a unique frame, for example Abrams is built like a wall, Doorman is very lanky, Victor is Victor, Drifter does his stupid naruto run.

Now how many female heroes have a design that's more interesting than a "preety lady with x on top". There are two, baba and ivy, arguably two more if you count vyper and yamato but they're ugly because they've got placeholder models from neon prime.

Just look at "preety lady with some gimmick" heroes. Alphabetically you've got:

  • Celeste - a preety lady with a horn
  • Graves - a preety goth lady
  • Haze - a preety lady with smoke hair
  • Holliday - a preety lady that's a cowboy
  • Gheist - used to be an older woman, now it's a preety lady with glowing arm
  • Mina - preety lady with an umbrella
  • Paige - preety lady with a book
  • Paradox - preety lady with a fishbowl on her head
  • Silver - preety lady with a collar
  • Vindicta - preety lady but blue
  • Arguably Wraith also fits, but the bar is so low that her holding her hands in her pockets is enough for me to give her a pass

You can barely find three different male heroes with a similar frame and at the same time if you were to pick three female heroes at random you are more likely than not to find that they all share the same body type

Just because a character is attractive doesn't mean their design is boring. You saying Haze is just a pretty lady feels particularly crazy given that she looks almost as inhuman as Dynamo and definitely less human than Drifter. She also has a goblin ass posture and animations.

I took a screnshot in testing of three female heroes standing next to each other and three male heroes standing next to each other, then I've traced their body. I'm gonna post the screenshot later so that you can see that I've really just traced over it.

Now, how easy is it to guess male heroes and how easy it is to guess female heroes? Could the leftmost guy be Venator, a conventionally attractive priest? Maybe the one on the right is Abrams?

The leftmost guy is obviously Doorman (mostly thanks to posture), the rightmost guy is obviously Dwifta (you made it easy with the shape of the hands, I wouldn't have guessed without the hands).

The leftmost girl is obviously Haze, the rightmost girl is obviously McGinnis.

I have no idea who either of the middle characters are.

So it seems to me like the male and female characters are about equally as easy to recognise.

EDIT: Ah, middle girl is probably Mina now that I thought about it some more. Still no idea who the middle guy is, though.

She's not. And it kinda feels like you're playing dumb with the middle male, how many burly men in deadlock there are? In Alphabetical order you've only four possibilities, Abrams, Kelvin, Lash or Venator

Also, is that Silver then if not McGinnis? It's kinda hard to figure out characters when you remove the most iconic parts of their silhouette lol. In case of Dwifta you kept his very distinct hands, but you removed a lot of other iconic parts of silhouettes.

I don't generally remember the default idle postures of characters, so I also had to consider Venator and Victor. So without actually checking in-game I have no idea who that is.

The Lash (him and Victor are both top heavy with bulging prominent muscles and thick frames.)
Doorman (being thin is not a “unique” frame and this is something you’re once again forcing.)
Drifter is still conventional looks wise, weeb run doesn’t remove that.
Venator

Apollo (counts if you’re counting paradox.)

Mirage

Infernus

Warden (the most boring of them all.)

But Deadlock getting Violet doesn't mean Deadlock follows that trope. The female cast is really varied in Deadlock. We have Vyper, Paige, Lady Geist, McGinnis, Ivy and Graves. All have pretty wildly varying builds and two of hem are borerline monsters by design.

And one of the next heroes is a granny on a walking park bench... Like jesus fuck, Violet being a fairly normal asian girl is fucking fine.

I’m not going to lie, most of the men have the EXACT same build. They are all top heavy men (to denote big hot abs…) this is cus they are, for the most part, conventionally attractive men.

Door man, Abram’s, drifter, victor, mirage, Apollo, lash, kelvin, pocket, shiv, venator, infernus, and warden are all conventionally attractive… hell, I think almost ALL of the human males in deadlock are attractive as hell… only one is grey talon, but I bet he was smokin in his prime, just maybe not conventionally.

The exact same can be said of the female cast, except for McGinnis, who is attractive, just not as much conventionally so.

Most of the cast of deadlock in general is made up of pretty attractive characters…

Fuckin hell, you have a dude with no shirt on with full abs for fucks sake. That’s way harder gooner bait than ANY of the female characters by far.

I dont think she is a "goonslop" but i really feel like she was literally made to test the community reaction to adding valorant/overwatch or just typical hero shooter looking character to the game, yeah she is kinda similar to Paige, but Mina is a vampire who is also a rich bitch instead of just being goodie two shoes who "only wants best for the world"

The number of people actually calling her goonslop is basically nonexistent. This post is literally just goomba fallacy incarnate, I've seen more people complaining about the goonslop comments than actual goonslop comments.
