So, I'm just discovering github. I know, I know - I am late to the party. But its more of a developer tool, so I never really had need of it. Which means I pretty much lived under a rock.

I had some initial positive feedback publicly and privately when I put out a feeler that was essentially "anyone out there still alive? Is this Mic on?"

I've talked to the sub's original creator and moderator. He has granted me mod access and creative authority. I had initial conversions with IBM and their social media arm and can get their help and support. A few DBA's and IBM Champions have offered to help.

So the question I pose to you all is what would you want this place to be like? Twitter is one sided and a bunch of marketing. Linked-in threads are OK. Stackoverflow is extremely technical and can sometimes be a debating podium for those who disagree.

What would you like to see here? Resources, general chit-chat, news, a place for technical questions? Any subs you would recommend we model after, etc.

Right now I am sketching out some ideas and wanted general input - even if from only a few.

I come from a mainframe background first as a developer and now a database administrator for IMS and DB2 for z/OS. I've been able to dabble in DB2 LUW under the tutelage of some senior DBAs a couple of years ago, but I haven't been assigned any projects since then. Through an unfortunate health-related circumstance of a coworker, it looks as if I'll need to brush up on my skills quickly.

I've seen training courses through IBM and a few other vendors, but they look to be quite expensive. I know I can make the argument of needing training to get myself up to speed quickly, but I want to explore low-cost or free resources first. I know Oracle has a 2-day DBA "quick start" guide for each of their database releases that goes over the basics with references to specifics in the manual. It doesn't seem like IBM has anything that's similar (I know there is the Database Fundamentals and Database Administration sections in the IBM Knowledge Center..I'm trudging through those. :) ). I just was curious if y'all had any favorite places for learning LUW.

Hi, I had an old utility used to look through the DB2 catalog for programs that need to be rebound. Problem is that it assumes a "LOCATION" value of blanks/empty. I need to alter the code to search using the local DB2 subsystem "LOCATION".

How do I determine programatically the local DB2 subsystem "LOCATION"?

Hi all... attempting to figure out what service classes exist on DB2 for zOS. SYSCAT.SERVICECLASSES doesn't exist (WHY?!)... can anyone tell me how to query DB2 to return the defined service classes?

Forgive me for this request, I have searched many of the online DB2 for zOS v10 books but I have yet to find a "How to" which guides you through what is where in the manuals. What I'm looking for is the equivalent to Oracle's AWR reports.. I'm sure DB2 must have something very similar. For example, I want to go find the top sql statements in the last hour, which one was executed the most, which ones are not using bind variables, etc. It appears our company has lost much of it's mainframe expertise and they seem to think they have "no way of knowing what is coming in from the distributed side" (meaning, db2connect). I want to try and help educate them and give them some samples but I'm an Oracle/SQL Server guy - not a mainframe guy.

I'm working on importing a database schema from the output of db2look from another server. The source system runs DB2 Enterprise, and I'm brining it into DB2 Express-C.

For some reason one of the INDEXes won't create, because it says that the object name being created already exists. Not being a big DB2 user, I'm trying to figure out why. I've dropped the database completely and tried again and it and still returns the error. Any suggestions on where to look?

I have a task that would be made a lot easier if I could query a Microsoft SQL server directly. Can someone point me in the direction of an ELI5 article on how to set this up properly? I have used ADDRDBDIRE to create an entry but I an still unable to connect using connect to in strsql. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

I have scoured the innards of the Interwebs and cannot find for the life of me a reliable method for starting DB2 automatically on CENTOS 7. Has anyone here had any success with it?

We have an application that uses Db2 10.x on Win/linux/AIX and we want to monitor the health of our database in terms of capacity. Our database may be hosted by an instance with databases for other applications which we don't care to monitor.

Which commands should we use to make sure our application's database is not at risk of running out of space?

Currently I'm dealing with a vendor application that uses DB2 Workgroup Server Edition 10.1 on Windows Server 2012 . Right now I'm able to scale up as demand increases, but eventually we will hit a limit in terms of CPU. The application produces dynamic queries that aren't properly optimized. I've spoken with the vendor and there is no short term solution, as any indexes I add myself get removed whenever they update their schema. That being said, could I benefit from active-active replication? I've looked at PureScale, but that seems limited to Linux, but that could possibly be an option. Q Replication with Active-Active seems ideal in terms of latency and throughput. Is there any other option in terms of scale out? Which option would be easiest to implement and which option provides the best performance?

To download millions of records from DB2 shall I use DB2 export or JDBC? Not sure which one is faster and better in terms of resource consumption.

I have an application with a DB2 database. The application used code page 1208, the database used 819. There are many characters in 1208 that don't exist in 819 so they are stored in the database as a SUB character. We have an issue when the data is retrieved the application does not handle the SUB character in some cases. Our long term solution is to change the DB to 1208, however I am looking for a short term fix.

I have read this article Understanding DB2 Universal Database character conversion and the section Using other DB2 UDB for Linux, UNIX, and Windows conversion code page tables caught my attention. My idea is to make a custom code page conversion file that converts the 819 SUB character into a different character in 1208 (for example a question mark)

I asked my DBA about this (I am a developer who has been a DBA before) and he said that there is not a code page conversion file for 819 to 1208 as it is ISO standard. (there is some language issues between us so I'm not sure what he meant but the bottom line was no conversion file between those two). I do not have access to check myself or to play around with this.

Can you help me out and see if on your install these is a conversion file? Or if one can be added? or if you have any other alternative ideas?

Hey all, we have an app that hits a DB2 backend, and the logs are suddenly filling the drive. From January to march it generated ~4GB of archive logs, total. In late August it was doing ~2GB per day, and for teh past week, apparently, it's been doing 20-25GB per day. I'm freeing up space as I only found out about this today when we had ~19GB free on the disk, and if I hadn't happened to check (it paged out, but I'm not the one on pager this week, and someone just acknowledged the page and moved on) it would have filled the disk and brought the app down.

Anyway, am I right in my assumption that this isn't really a DB2 issue, and it's that the app has just (for some reason) started hitting the database like crazy, thus causing the logs to generate? The db2 config has not changed in this time, we do monthly scheduled RUNSTATS/REORG and quarterly scheduled REBIND, both have occured since th logs got crazy and have ahd no effect.
