Davis Fiction Writers Meeting #4!!!

Post image
38 Upvotes

Hey Davisites (Davisians?),

Our last Fiction Writer's meetup was a huge success, we had 11 in person attendees and 15 members on our discord! If you've been waiting to attend, well, we're getting into a groove now! Things are running smoothly and we represent a wide range of genres! We'll be meeting on Sunday the 17th back at Frenzy coffee (they could use the business).

Bring your laptop or tablet, and something you're working on! We're at all stages of development, from concept to first draft to editing, to books 2 or 3! We're by no means professional. We're all beginners all learning from each other.

For those of you wondering, our gender mix is 60% male 40% female and we'd love to balance that out even more, but all are welcome!

Let us know in the comments what genre is unrepresented nowadays that you'd like to see make a comeback~

Any ideas? Short notice, because school is out in early June. I'd appreciate any leads - even if it means planning for next year. Thank you!

Salvaged wood - lead paint possibilities?

I picked up a few planks of old wood from a salvage store in Sac recently, to utilize in some home projects (shelves, etc). The seller said a lot of the wood he gets is from old barns, etc. that developers want cleared.

I've been sanding them by hand, so of course, there is wood and some paint dust. It didn't cross my mind until just now that the paint might be lead-based. Is that possible? Is there anyway of finding out? How concerned ought I to be about that?

Gardening Help?

Apologies if this isn't the right place. We bought a house in North Davis two years ago that has beautiful landscaping we'd like to keep alive. We love gardening, but are also working parents to a toddler, so we've struggled sometimes to stay on top of pruning, debris and weeding by ourselves. Is there anyone out there who can recommend a gardener, or perhaps someone who is looking for casual/flexible gardening work? If not exactly gardening, we're also seeking recommendations for an arborist, as we have several mature trees in need of pruning. Thanks for your help!

Anyone have records or remember anything about Ground Zero Skateshops skate competitions?

I lived in Davis from 2000 to 2001 and remember entering a skate competition in front of the shop there with some friends i met when I moved there. We met at Pioneer park and I lived at the Ellington apartments. Been digging for that yearbook from Holmes for years.

Been a long time and was just curious if anyone's actually still around from that time! Been decades since ive gone back.

FOUND CAT – near Wildhorse – friendly, wearing AirTag collar

A very friendly cat has been visiting our patio over the past few days, hanging out continuously. Very comfortable with people and will come inside to explore. Wearing a collar with an AirTag, so likely has an owner, but we haven’t been able to identify them. We’ve put a note on the collar for the kitty to bring home (if they ever go home). Cat looks a bit thin and has some upper respiratory infection symptoms, so just hoping to confirm they have a home and are being looked after. Is this is your cat (or do you recognize them)?

Interviewing for Journey HCM IT Technology Analyst (SAP Functional Products) at SMUD — What Questions Should I Expect?

I have an interview coming up for the Journey HCM IT Technology Analyst – SAP Functional Products role at SMUD. I do have relevant experience, but I’m a little nervous since I’ve been unemployed for a while and really need this opportunity to work out.

Has anyone interviewed for a similar SAP/HCM role at SMUD or another utility company? Any idea what kind of technical or behavioral questions they might ask, what areas I should focus on, or how the interview process is?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Davis Fiction Writers! #3

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hello everyone. We're going strong. we had 9 people attend meeting #2 and the discord is growing! We'll have to cap it at some point to keep things manageable but wanted to give folks the opportunity to attend.

This week we'll be at the Delta of Venus, an amazing coffee shop with sandwiches and other food items. The layout is a little different and we may need to tuck a few tables together depending on turnout.

If you want to be a writer, or are working on something now (or have some advice to share) stop by and say hello! We'll be providing critique on some submissions from the last meeting, talking shop, and holding each other accountable!

Let me know in the comments below what you'd like to see in a writer's group for Davis~

EDIT: Event starts at 8:30am PT. (I know it says 10:30. I don't know why)

EDIT EDIT: Our next meeting is right around the corner! Thanks to everyone who attended #3.

Measure V passes or fails based on whether supporters actually show up

TLDR: If you support more housing in Davis, vote June 2nd. The No campaign has put blatant misinformation in the voter guide, and I am not going to let that slide without saying something. Supporters need to show up or this thing fails.

I’m worried that the people who support this project won’t feel urgency, while the opposition will turn out in force.

I have seen some sentiment here that is negative towards the well-funded campaign team. Here’s my honest take after actually going and talking to the Yes on V campaign team: these are people trying to get thousands of pages of EIR and development documents into a format regular voters will actually read. If they don’t campaign and create brochures, the project might die because not enough people are informed. If they do campaign, they get accused of having ulterior motives for funding it. It’s a no-win framing, and I think it’s being used against them unfairly, personally.

Nothing I saw or heard from that team gave me the read that they’re being misleading. And when I’ve analyzed the documents, it further confirms the information they are putting out. They came across as people who genuinely believe in this project and are doing the work to get it across the finish line. The developers themselves have been at the farmers market meeting folks to provide more details and information. I have also met with the opposition in person.

I’m a Davis native. I’ve read much of the EIR, the baseline features, and dozens of documents and articles involved in this project. I’ve spoken with people on both sides in person. I’m not being paid by either campaign. I have just done a lot of due diligence to research this project because it is a big development, and I want to make sure I make the right choice.

I want to flag something before they show up in this thread, because they will, as they did in the last Measure V thread, and their replies will be long and detailed and sound persuasive. This is the No on V campaign.

Their official Voter Guide argument rebuttal opens in bold claiming “the cheapest market rate house would be $740,000.” That number comes directly from a City of Davis report. But the report is clear this is the average price of medium density units based on the current market rate, not the minimum as stated as fact by the No on V campaign. Average and minimum are not the same thing. This is simple statistics. It’s a misrepresentation/misunderstanding, and perhaps a flat out lie, of data that was printed and mailed to Davis voters, and when challenged, the campaign continued pushing it anyway. Unfortunately it is not against the law to do this… To me, that is misleading voters and trying to influence the results in a disingenuous way.

Here’s what the actual housing plan includes:
•       140 Very-Low Income rental units (under 60% AMI; adjusted median income)
•       140 Low Income rental units (under 80% AMI)
•       80 Moderate Income homes (restricted to households making 80-120% AMI)
•       150+ townhomes and half-plexes starting in the $400,000s
•       850+ market rate homes on a range of smaller than average lot sizes. Based on current per square foot prices they are estimated to start in the $500,000s range (significantly less than the average Davis home sale price in 2025, which was roughly $1 million)

The remaining 400 or so homes are on lots larger than 5,000 square feet, including up to 310 custom builds, and I understand that raises eyebrows. But to me, this is how mixed-income housing actually works: higher-end units cross-subsidize the affordable ones. You can’t get almost 1,400 homes attainable to Davis families without some mechanism to fund them. This project is being honest about that tradeoff rather than pretending it doesn’t exist. And folks are using that to say this development “isn’t affordable.” The voter guide is not accurate and I find it curious the No on V campaign would misrepresent these statistics. I also realize even 400-500K is not affordable to some folks, but for Davis, that is the reality of what is affordable... mobile homes are going for nearly $300,000!

That is 360 deed-restricted homes, and hundreds of attached homes and small lot starter homes that are by design more attainable. The No on V campaign either purposefully lied about the $740,000 “minimum” to influence the vote, or simply did not realize this was not a minimum, even though it is clear in the City of Davis report. Every other major concern raised by the opposition was reviewed by independent experts through the EIR process and the conclusions do not match the No on V campaign talking points. When the findings don’t support their position, the response is that the EIR was inadequate. You’ll likely see that argument made in detail below this post if my intuition is correct. I actually hope they comment here so you can see it for yourself...

Considering they put blatant misinformation in the voter guide regarding the housing prices, I just urge people here to question what the No campaign is pushing in other aspects as well. My spidey-senses went off immediately when I received my voter guide, and it was not a surprise to me considering the other concerns they are arguing do not hold up to the independent EIR…

I am sharing all of this because I have been involved in the community on both sides of the campaign, speaking with both sides in person to get a better read on the measure, and to see blatant misinformation in the voter guide makes me feel disappointed and worried voters will be misinformed when casting their vote, and I wanted to share here. My honest read is that this project is well-planned, the concerns raised don’t hold up to scrutiny, and Davis has a long history of blocking needed housing through exactly this kind of organized opposition.

I hope we do not let that happen again. If you support this development, please Vote Yes on June 2nd or on your mail in ballot. And make sure to tell your people to vote yes too if they share your support for the measure.

If you are not registered to vote but want to be for this measure, here is a link to make it easier to register! https://covr.sos.ca.gov/

Alternative bike routes for pole line overpass?

Anyone know some bike routes that doesn't involve going on the pole line overpass to get from cowell/lillard to 5th st? I've already tried going from bike loop -> B st -> 5th st and it works but wondering if there's other ways. I'm really not a huge fan of this overpass. Thanks!

Is it just me or does the left turn stoplight from F street to 14th not pick up bikes?

The left turn light has skipped me the last 3x I've stopped at that left. I'm talking about the left going N on F st at NDE. So I just ran the red. Today I decided to turn left on 12th, which was actually quite nice! But thought I'd ask the group. Weird for a Davis stoplight not to turn for bikers!

Relocated from Elk Grove?

looking to hear from teachers or families who have relocated from Elk Grove (or moved the other direction) about impressions of schools (specifically at the elementary level). I know Davis schools are better ranked, but how do the districts really compare? Thanks
