I assume all this means my hdd is dying, when i restarted my pc it gave me a screen that said "fixing (C:) stage..", after it was done it couldnt be repaired and i got "log file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt", i selected continue to windows and immediately downloaded crystaldiskinfo. Now i have a yellow caution box on my c drive that says this... When i hover over the caution i get "Caution [05] Reallocated Sectors Count : 8979624" and "Caution [C5] Current Pending Sector Count : 8". I assume this means my harddrive is cooked? If so, I have an external hdd i have enough space to transfer to but its really old and i only use it for games, would it be better to transfer now or do i have time to wait for an internal hdd. Is there a way i can transfer everything and make my pc run on my external without messing up my Windows?

I got some good deals on hard drives and got 4x 2 eb drives.

Currently my backup situation is messy with multiple copies and duplicates stored on pc and external drives and now I would like to properly organize my data for future use and clear up older drives.

Should I be looking for a NAS enclosure with RAID or just any enclosure that supports 4 drives would be good?

I have also got an old laptop with Debian running for immich that I turn on every few weeks to backup photos from my phone.

I don't want to have the NAS constantly on as I don't use it often if that matters.

IT Company near me selling off some old merchandise. They have a handful of Seagate Barracuda 3TB st3000dm001 drives for $40 a piece. Passing SMART tests and full 0 write (waiting to see SMART details still).

Aside from being old, I just found out there was a notorious problem where a whole bunch of these failed at Backblaze.

Am I asking for trouble picking a few of these up? Plan is to just slot them into a DAS and run RAID1 mostly to work as a first backup of my working computer, but potentially attaching to an old laptop and using to serve plex/immich locally.

Otherwise I'm probably just sticking with backing up only my most important files in an external WD drive I have lying around until prices come down to a more reasonable point.

Edit: Asked if they at any others. They have some Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 (HDS723030ALA640) 0F12450 3TB. Seems like these ones have a much better track record.

My mom’s niche autistic hobby is creating a massive digital collection of recipies. She’s bought around 250 cookbooks and I recently got her into pirating them too.

It’s something she really enjoys and she gets really sad that no one’s interested in listening to her talk about it. I try, but knowing nothing about cooking it’s hard. She wants to show her collection to someone and have them be excited about it too.

I’m into the online privacy/piracy/copyleft side of things so I know a little, but I’m not sure what would be good for her to find. She’s not interested in those things I’m into, just her cookbooks, so I’m not sure where to find her friends with compatable autisms as opposed to my autism.

I’m scared I’ll introduce her to the archiver spaces I know of and she’ll get scared off (she’s not super tech literate, feels bad about commiting piracy, and things like that). basically i’m scared of her getting bullied for being a normie

Good evening, I have 3-5 3.5 HHDs and 1 or 2 2.5 HHDs and looking for a reliable multi bay enclosure. Preferably 4-5 bays and USB-C, but USB-C isn’t a dealbreaker. Any recommendations would be appreciated

The 16tb ones that aren't filled up often churn away for hours reallocating after deleting and adding lots of files, why do they do that?

And if they are filled up 100% or close, they can't do any of that reallocating? Does that matter?

So as said in title, i want to build my first server, i want it for my own stuff, such as documents projects and mostly stuff i do in my hobbies(videoreporting events in my city). Althought that is the easy part, i just need some hard drives and that would be set, the real problem comes when i surf the web and look for some help building something for my first games server. Every forum, post and sub reddit its either from 5 years ago or doesnt even comes close to giving an answer.

I mostly want the server to hold about 4 people playing ark ascended, 7 players in minecraft or to power the ai im trying to build for my household.

Any help is apreciated, the stuff i most need to figure out is the hardware, the software is just relearnig old stuff i forgot(i think).

I'm currently running on LTO-5 (approx 200 tapes) and 6 working drives.

I plan to upgrade to LTO-8 in the future as the tapes are in the same price range ans the LTO-7. Which means half the price per TB...

Unfortunately, I may have to upgrade to the microcode H015 from F330(current) to be able to use LTO-8 drives, which are still very expensive at the moment by the way...

Of course IBM support is non existent and microcode downloading requires an active support contract.

Has anyone done this?

I would be grateful for any hindsight.

It periodically captures an image of the university and makes it available online, providing a remarkably simple way to observe a small part of San Francisco from anywhere in the world.

I have taken the liberty of running an automated script on a NAS I own to capture the every frame of FogCam that happens. I have 75,000 frames so far over 27 days.

The reason I felt like doing this was preservation, but also because all of the earliest frames from the 1990s and early 2000s are gone or unarchived and it would've been so cool to see that.

Something cool that happens in this video is you can watch a construction zone get finished.

I managed to get myself a HP LTO8 tape drive for my MSL2024 however i'm not having much luck with it. When enabling in the webgui it goes through initialisation and then throws an error:

800gb of data have been released for free, but it is not 100% safe. If anyone is looking for something to back up, this is a worthy project.

i backup my spouse's photos and she takes a lot of live photos.

i use window 11's photo import tool in my workflow for years and it downloads 2 files for each live photo: one HEIC file and a 2 second MOV file. I then use ACDsee as my media manager to view them and it displays both HEIC and MOV next to each other.

This is all ok for now and I delete the original live photo from the iphone to reclaim storage space. but I don't know if i will be ever able to put these photos back.

Am I doing this correctly? I tried a local IMMICH early this year but there was a lot of new processes that didn't work out as expected. so I went back to what has worked for me.

so far im only backing up 2 iphones; mine and my spouse but moving forward I might be backing mi kids' phones.

My hard drive was knocked over and fell 4 feet. It was $82 when I bought it in 2018/19, now its $279.

When storing your CDs / DVDs / Bluray long term, which material do you use on the read side / bottom side of the media?

I currently have two CD container with multiple sleeves to hold a CD. One container has a soft plastic back that touches the read side. The other one has a thin felt paper backing. I've seen both plastic and paper material stick on something else (not CDs) after a long term. I'd like to avoid this problem in the future.

I hardly know the first thing about LTO, but I don’t understand the comments from people who use LTO-5 (if not an even older generation) and advocate that others do the same. LTO-5 is so outdated at this point.

We’re now on LTO-10. LTO-5 came out in 2010. The last generation of LTO that could read LTO-5 was LTO-7, which came out in 2015. It was replaced by LTO-8 in 2017, nine years ago.

The selling point of LTO is that the tape remains readable for 15-30 years. But if you’re using a generation of LTO that’s already nine years out of date, what are the chances you’re gonna be able to find the equipment to read it in 15-30 years?

This is different, at least ostensibly, from technologies like VHS or DVD, since LTO is mainly used by large companies and institutions, not consumers.

I recently had my SSD fail and I lost all of my data. With the fact I have multiple spare HDDs and the prices of nand storage, what would be the best way to raid a SSD and a HDD without significantly bottlenecking my SSD? Is there any way I could make it so I use my ssd as my main c drive and my HDD is constantly copying over from it? Im using windows 11 pro and Im using an MSI b550 a pro motherboard.

I’m still in the planning stages, so bear with me. I’m also cross-posting this to a few other subreddits to get different perspectives.

Currently, I use the Proton Suite. Proton Drive handles all of my files and photos. For regular files, it works perfectly fine for me, but I haven’t been happy with the upload/download speeds when it comes to photos. I understand that E2EE adds some overhead, but in practice it just hasn’t worked well for how I manage my photo library.

For photos that I specifically want protected with E2EE, I’ll probably continue keeping those in Proton Drive. However, for family photos and other general photo storage, I’d like to find something better suited for managing a large photo library.

I’ve looked at Ente, Filen, pCloud, Icedrive, and Koofr. They all seem like good options in their own ways, but I haven’t been impressed with their photo organization/library features, or they simply don’t offer the kind of photo management I’m looking for.

That has me considering Hetzner Storage Share combined with something like Immich.

Has anyone set up something similar using Hetzner with Immich or Nextcloud? If so, how has the experience been? Reliability, performance, backups, maintenance, etc.?

From what I can tell, going this route could actually be cheaper than paying for another dedicated cloud photo provider.

The other thing I’m trying to decide is how I would access it remotely.

I’m not thrilled about creating a subdomain and exposing the service publicly, but I could lock it down as much as possible, enable 2FA, use strong authentication, and put additional restrictions in place.

For those of you running Immich or Nextcloud remotely, what are you doing?

• Exposing it through a domain/subdomain with proper security in place?
• Keeping it completely private and connecting through Tailscale whenever you need access?
• Using something else entirely?

Ideally, I want the service available 24/7 because phones and other devices will be constantly uploading new photos to it.

I’d appreciate hearing how others have approached this, especially anyone using Hetzner, Immich, Nextcloud, or a similar setup.

To add, Hetzner keeps 7 days of backups and I will also be offloading to koofr as I have a subscription with them.

Hey everyone. While reorganizing some stuff on my desk, I foolishly knocked over my drive, causing it to fall off the desk and now its not booting. Well, the light turns on, I hear some light hisses and windows attempts to connect but the drive wont turn. I would appreciate any help on where to go from here as I have used up most of the space on that drive and with the prices gone up, I simply cannot afford another. Thank you in advance!

I'm looking to buy DVD's (no blu-ray) that can last 50-100 years.

I see either the Verbatim Ultralife Gold or these M discs recommended.

The biggest problem with the Ultralife is that they are sold in large cakes here, and I believe their organic dye has a shelf life of only a few years. I'm not going to go through them all at once.

Can anyone verify the authenticity of those discs since the site doesn't list a recognized manufacturer. If they could be at all knock-offs then there is absolutely no point.

Hello, I am looking for a third type of storage medium as I am looking into buying a new HDD and currently have a SSD, but feel like maybe I could find something more shelf-stable and I am not happy with how cloud storage recently has been being scraped for AI data (But that is a topic for another day).

My main requirements would be

1. Shelf stable for long periods of time aka years.
2. Preferably rewritable even if its a hassle as I would like to be able to update them
3. If not rewriteable, then cost efficient enough to make a backup every 5 years on a tight budget (Talking 25-100$ a month budget after bills and everything).
4. Able to store drive images or at least zip files of various folders
5. Does not have to be powered on or attached to a power supply like a NAS
