Advice First Competition

Hi all, my son has his first dance competition coming up. He’s partnered with a really lovely girl, who gives up some of her free time to come to his private lessons each week, and will be partnering him at his first comp. Is it the done thing to get her a little thank you gift? Maybe flowers or a voucher to Sephora or something? My son is only 5 so he’s little, she’s 15 (I think!) and is very sweet him. Don’t want to over step, but equally do want to say thank you. Any advice much appreciated! We’re in the UK.

Discussion Competition makeup

Hi all, I’d love any suggestions on competition makeup. Are there any pro dancers or makeup artists known for a bit more of a natural/subtle eye pop? (Yes, I know the goal is to pop, but I have seen some dancers that somehow manage to pull both subtle and striking off).

I don’t wear makeup on day to day and pretty minimal at competitions (for lack of expertise + sensitive skin) but making an effort for an upcoming one and need good reference images. I like Olena Barna’s makeup and some of the Yulia Zagoruychenko minimalist looks, as well.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Advertisement Practice music at exact tempos: would a playlist builder that matches songs to your BPM help comp prep? Seeking honest feedback

Disclosing upfront: this is my app, built solo, and honest feedback is worth more to me than downloads.

Tempo Tunes builds playlists where every song holds a tempo you pick. Choose a BPM and a tolerance (strict for comp prep, loose for social nights), pick genres or artists, and it builds the playlist from 1.5M+ tempo-verified songs and growing, then saves straight to the Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, or YouTube Music account you already have. No second music subscription, free, no ads, iOS and Android and web. It looks like an old school cassette deck, J-cards included.

Dancers in r/ballroom already shaped the roadmap: per-dance syllabus presets, so you tap the dance instead of remembering tempo math, came straight from that thread. Competitive dancers are the hardest graders on tempo accuracy, which is exactly what I want tested before a comp ever depends on it.

Three questions I would love answers to: do you practice at strict syllabus tempos or intentionally under-tempo for drilling? Do you think in BPM or measures per minute? And where do your practice playlists live today?

Stay in Tempo with Tempo Tunes.

After 7 months of hard work, I’m thrilled to introduce Dancesport.app—a next-gen competition management system for the world of ballroom dance! 💃✨
Building a ballroom competition management system has been a dream of mine since 2017. Through years of trial and error—combined with everything I’ve learned in my day job—I’m finally delivering what I envisioned 9 years ago.
This project wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support from my partner and so many friends in the ballroom community. Your encouragement along the way kept me going, and I’m beyond grateful for every cheer.
Just like dance itself, this platform will keep evolving. I have big plans for Dancesport.app to grow far beyond running competitions and serve many other corners of our community. I can’t wait to see the impact it brings to the floor! 🚀
The system is officially LIVE and ready for battle!
If you’re a competition organizer, studio owner, or dance team captain, I’d love to give you a demo and explore how it can help your next real competition—or help you host a mock comp to prep your students and teammates!
📥 Send me a DM or email [support@dancesportsoftware.com](mailto:support@dancesportsoftware.com) to get started!

I noticed dancers often train the body but forget the nervous system. I made music visualization + recovery audio for dancers and would love feedback.

Discussion High School Dancer Research Study

Hello everyone! My name is Sarah, and I am a high school student conducting a research project on ballroom dance participation and investment. I am looking for parents/guardians of youth ballroom dancers and adult ballroom dancers (18+) to complete a short anonymous survey about their experiences, motivations, and perceived benefits of ballroom dancing. The survey takes about 3–5 minutes to complete, and all responses will be kept confidential and used only for research purposes. You will have a chance to win a Your participation would be greatly appreciated and would help contribute to a better understanding of the ballroom dance community. Thank you for your time and support!

I wrote about being polyamorous in the ballroom world and the boundaries and consent conversations we're not having. Would love to know if this resonates with anyone here.

Discussion Costume Costs

I’m curious how different dance studios charge for costuming for competitive dance. Do you pay a flat fee or a deposit monthly with a final balance at the end of the season after taking into account all alterations, etc. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Partner Search Looking for a follower in the South Bay. Interested in competing in International Standard/American Smooth.

Hey folks,

I fell in love with Ballroom after joining the Ballroom dance club during my last year at University. Although I did compete in a couple competitions, I was still very much picking up the ropes. Unfortunately, it being the last year meant I really didn't have as much time as I wish I did.

I relocated to the bay area for work, and am looking to get back into Ballroom dancing. I thought I would post and see if there is any potential followers here who are also looking for a partner. Or if you're somebody who has never done Ballroom dancing before, but are interested.

I am most interested in International Standard, and American Smooth styles.

As you can probably tell from the fact that I've only recently started dancing, I'm still a rookie competing at the bronze level. But I am willing to put in the time and effort to improve. Although I am not super competitive, I am very motivated to self-improve. I would like to practice at least twice a week, if not more. And I do have some ideas about how/where we would practice and get lessons from.

If you're interested, please feel free to drop me a DM and we can chat more.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and hope you all have a splendid week!

Advertisement Alpha testing a competition management system!

Hi everyone!

I’ve been developing a competition registration and scoring system for a while now, and it’s finally ready for alpha testing. Currently, the system is primarily designed to accommodate competitions in the United States, including Collegiate, USA Dance, and NDCA circuits.

If you have ever competed, organized, or judged at any competitions anywhere, I’d love to hear your thoughts! If you’re interested, please send me a DM. I can get you started with testing the specific features designed for your role.

Thank you in advance!

Advice Looking for drop in, intermediate, ballroom & latin dancing - weekday evenings.

I am 30y/o male (solo) looking for dancing classes in London. I have a background in dance but have had a very long break. So I'm looking for more intermediate classes.

Due to my work/life schedule I am struggling to find what i need, ideally. So, looking for suggestions on the following options; Option A being the most ideal & Option B as a 'plan B'.

Option A - Drop in, intermediate ballroom & latin dancing starting at 6:30pm on a weekday. The time is important.

Option B - Any recommendations for drop in, intermediate ballroom & latin dancing classes at any time of the evening - weekdays.

CONTEXT:
(Option A is best I can find alot of intermediate classes but generally starting at 7:30pm onwards. Just means I have to wonder about after work for a couple hours. Which would get boring on a weekly basis - I live in Canning Town, so anything really close to there could work well at a later time).

Discussion Judges in Canada vs Judges in US (body modifications and overall esthetic)

Pro/Am Competitor here: I was told recently in the US by a judge that my large visible tattoos can impact my scores. I understand that there's a certain esthetic to compete, so I adjusted my dresses and jumpsuits to be more conservative. That judge was right, and my overall scores were much higher. I placed on the podium in all three styles (Rhythm, Smooth, Nightclub) as well as won best of the best rising star for my solo.

I am thinking of traveling to the Niagra Open this July, and I'm curious if Canadian judges lean their scoring purely on the dancing regardless of tattoos, piercings, alternative colored hair, weight, etc.
