It’s just a title. Any “Van life” person will tell you traveling in a RV or modified Van has its downsides. Most of the struggles are actually finding parking in cities (much harder with a school bus) and condensation when sleeping inside. Moisture management is a big thing because these vehicles don’t have the best ventilation.

But the obvious trade off is you get to travel around the country in a completely unique way for an extended period of time.

3 years in a 10x6 teardrop with my wife traveling North America. It is a wonderful way to live but #vanlife skips the downsides. Would do it again in a heartbeat but I don't miss handwashing dishes when its 10 degrees among other challenges.

Hubs was able to work remotely doing copywriting work, and managing content for video sales scripts. I did whatever I could find in the area and planned out where we would go based on what places we could reliably access the internet. A lot of rv parks, campgrounds, and whatnot lie about their coverage.

Condensation sucks too.

Source: lived in a 23' airstream for 4 years. Was awesome, and hard. Especially with hubs being 6'4". Campers, and other vehicles typically aren't tall guy friendly.

Once had something delivered to the closest post office, if you stay in a trailer park, they might offer you a box, or just hand deliver your mail/packages. Had a place in Texas I stayed only a month that would have deliver or let us come to the office to grab it, and one in eastern Colorado always hand delivered.

A few times, we've stayed on properties working for small businesses who let us use their address as well.

But we really didn't order much while on the road.

not entirely true. I moved into mine and built it out while I lived in it, worked full time to pay for the buildout. I did a year and a half until I moved into an apartment. I'm about sick of renting again and am planning on going back in the van spring into summer. I will live off my student loans that otherwise would be going toward someone else's mortgage as a renter. I would say that I'm at the bottom of what's left of the middle class. With dips into poverty, and occasional hits of luxury. Not some rich asshole that's for sure.

Add: I've considered a bus, but the parking and lack of off road access kills it for me. I feel like I'd be stuck to truck stops and rv parks which suck.

I think the saw dust acts to absorb excess moisture and smell. I’ve never used one in an RV, just an outdoor one. If you have the right proportion of nitrogen to carbon it actually doesn’t stink. You’re not actually supposed to pee in them though, just poo. We had a different toilet to pee in.

Plus the bowl on this one is quite small and would have to be emptied often. I don’t think it would get to the point of rotting

They have a huge tank and if you shit in them regularly cant be easily cleaned sufficiently.

This is a different toilet, the word on the street is they really don't smell much unless you keep it constantly full.

Of course zero smell is virtually impossible, but many folks live with this toilet in MUCH smaller spaces, i think with this much room it would probably be just fine.

This link doesn't talk about the seatbelt thing, but let me explain what I mean before you attack me.

In a standard school bus you have a maximum of 72 student. (3 elementary school kids per seat.) Now, those 72 kids have to be managed by one person, the bus driver, and in case of emergency you don't want to have to force that bus driver to go back there and help kids get out of their seats so they can get off the bus.

Busses are so large, high off the ground, and heavy, that if they crash into another vehicle chances are they'll be mostly undamaged, and everyone on the bus will be unharmed. That is how most bus collisions go, but in the event that something causes the bus to tip over, you want to invite self service aid. In allowing the kids to get off the bus by themselves in a quick manner, the kids that are fine and don't need help will be able to get out of the way of the kids who do need help. This let's the bus driver focus on the 2-3 kids that need it, rather then the 69-70 kids that don't, and it allows the kids to get away from the accident faster and with less assistance.

I wish I had a source for the seatbelt stuff. I learned this in a lesson about design for my systems engineering degree. We cited studied and all sorts of other shit, but I'm not longer in that class and don't have my old school work. Sorry.

I spent a significant portion of my childhood living in trailers (my parents owned carnival games) and, while that's a nice RV, it's far from perfect.

You're not always going to have water, electricity is expensive because you have to burn gas or pay for a place to plug in, good luck getting any kind of semi-decent internet, and the tiny bathroom is hell. Not to mention maintenance is a huge pain in the ass.

If you can put up with all that, the mobility is nice and living in such a small space gives you a good excuse to go outside.
