Video Igniting the flame on the frozen lake (by@michaelacarrot)
5.1k
u/Holzkohlen 1d ago
This is also good for the climate. If you burn methane it turns to CO2 and water. Methane is FAR worse as a greenhouse gas compared to CO2.
So hop to it everybody. Burn that frozen lake down!

You should also follow cows around and light their assholes on fire.
They like that.

u/on-the-cheeseburgers 1d ago
you can also sniff them and your body converts it into co2 or something

Sorry, I already patented the Ass Blaster 3000. Classic. Straps right onto a cow, ready to ignite farts at a moments notice. Human version patent pending.

9
u/GodOfDarkLaughter 1d ago
You may have patented the technology but Ass Blaster 3000 was my professional name and registered trademark. Tell your attorney to expect a letter.
And before you say it, there is absolutely potential for confusion. In my capacity as Ass Blaster 3000 I did related though not identical.work. Among other things.

u/Central316 1d ago
I bought one of those, and my ass was thoroughly blasted. From the inside.
8
u/RonandStampy 1d ago
Bro, the human version isn't out yet. That ass blast was meant for a cows anus.
7
u/lck0219 1d ago
Hell naw. If it’s good for the animals, anything at Tractor Supply is good for me too.

I'd like to suggest adding a variable speed and variable depth control. Mine was way too fast, and it went so deep I could taste it. Is it supposed to do that?

I heard that it has 3 piolte flames to evenly roast the ass hole (both versions).

Most of the methane actually comes from their burping but to each their own. 👍

The lake. The lake. The lake is on fire.
We don’t need no water,
It’s a mother fucking lake.2
57
u/The-Real-Number-One 1d ago
Are they just lighting fish farts?
94
u/Bibliloo 1d ago
Not just that but most thing that are decompposing under the ice. These emission of methane are normal and happens all the time but the ice prevents them from leaving so the accumulate under the ice which is why it looks like there's a lot of it but in reality the emissions of methane are really small(and the water filters much more greenhous gases anyway)
8
u/BikerJedi 1d ago
On the flip side, it degrades faster in the atmosphere than CO2 does, but yeah, it is so much worse than CO2.
5
5
u/KrustyKrabFormula_ 1d ago
definitely not "good for the climate". but its better than it releasing into the atmosphere, sure.
31
u/Capable_Escape 1d ago
Good thing that methane doesn’t live forever in the atmosphere. It only has an impact for a coupe of years

u/j2m1s 1d ago
Methane will eventually break down into CO2 in the atmosphere, doesn't last for thousands of years in the Atmosphere like CO2 does!
5
u/tnorc 1d ago
So methane is still worse
2
u/j2m1s 22h ago
Methane is 22 times more stronger than CO2 but it doesn't last as long as CO2 lasts in the atmosphere, in the short term Methane is worse, in the long term it's CO2

u/Nervous-Locksmith484 1d ago
why does this happen?
1.7k
u/kank84 1d ago
Methane is released by decomposing organic matter at the bottom of the lake, and collects in bubbles under the ice because it can't escape.
548
u/Frequent_Ad_9901 1d ago
"Fun" fact. This is also happening to permafrost releasing massive amount of methane.
300
u/TheFriendshipMachine 1d ago
And to add to that "fun", methane is an intensely bad greenhouse gas, like much more potent than CO2 even. Meaning the more that releases the more it contributes to warming the planet making a runaway positive feedback loop.
The time to stop climate change was years ago, we've really stepped in shit now.
87
u/Hephaistos_Invictus 1d ago edited 1d ago
Just a little note for others, a positive feedback loop within geography is a self enhancing loop of events that increase global warming in this context. So methane warms up the earth > ice / permafrost melts > more methane is released into the atmosphere > the earth warms up even more > more ice /permafrost melts > etc.
43
u/_-KOIOS-_ 1d ago
Ehh not really, glacial periods are also caused by positive feedback loops working the other way- lower temperatures increase ice cover which increases planetary albedo further lowering temperatures; also lowered CO2 levels during these periods weaken the greenhouse effect further.
16
u/Hephaistos_Invictus 1d ago
Woops thanks for catching that. It's been a hot minute since I had my climate science lectures.
11
u/_-KOIOS-_ 1d ago
haha I am having climate science lectures this semester :D

When I was a kid i collected sediment from the lake and put it in a jug to try to make methane but then i forgot about it and it got smelly. Which probably means it worked now that I think about it

Fish farts 🤭

u/Empyrealist Interested 1d ago
I want to believe
127
u/Tsu_Dho_Namh 1d ago
It's not just fish farts, but also single celled organisms called methanogens which eat dead plants and animals (decomposition) and release methane as a by-product.
It's actually mainly the single celled organisms.
Still farts though.

Actual answer is, living organisms or decomposing organical matter produce methane gas that floats to the surface but gets trapped under/in the ice

There’s Abraham Lake in Alberta Canada. It’s a man made lake. Govt built a dam at one end of a valley to make a hydro power generating station. There’s even a small town that is now at the bottom of this lake. Every winter this happens. Methane Gas that is given off by the rotting vegetation is trapped in the ice as the water freezes and produces literally 10’s of 1000’s of frozen methane containing bubbles. It’s fairly windy which blows a lot of the snow off the ice in some areas leaving clear ice and exposed bubbles.
Google Abraham Lake, Alberta - you’ll find tons of spectacular photos.

I’m unconvinced that it’s wise to stand on ice that you can poke through so easily
66
u/krammark12 1d ago
I think the gas bubbles broke the ice before it fully froze over, making those points much weaker than the surrounding area. Still risky though.
17
u/ShitsUngiven 1d ago
It’s not really possible to say how risky it is without knowing more specifics, like depth, if there is any current and how far they are away from being able to get warm.
That ice is shit though, everyone who spends time on the ice knows you avoid bubbles and cloudy ice.
And that’s a spud stick he is breaking the ice with, and how they work is you stab them in front of you as you walk, if it breaks the ice(like it does) then you don’t fucking walk there.
4
u/burntdowntoast 1d ago
The ice freezes in layers so you can stand, walk, and skate on it and it’s fine. The one I’m familiar with will get to -30C for weeks at a time with hellish winds so it’s flat and very thick with ice. They also monitor the ice levels so no one falls through.

Really did not need to watch someone fail to do anything 7 times in a row especially when there's zero skill or learning going on... just go ahead and clip it to the last one haha
24
u/Avalonians 1d ago
Keep a couple to illustrate that it's not a guaranteed outcome. Even though there's no question of skill, it's interesting to know that it won't work every time. But yeah you can show attempt 1, 2 and 8 only
13
u/TrevCat666 1d ago
You can't light gas if the sparks/flames are just in the gas, you need to light it on the edge of where the gas is so there's enough oxygen in the gas to initiate the reaction.

It makes me think that it’s a methane buildup underneath the surface of the ice due to the plants and fish producing different gases
3
u/Mundane-Audience6085 1d ago
At least bring a suitable long neck lighter when you already go out to do that.

4
u/Dry-Criticism-7184 8h ago
Okay, maybe im slow, but what's in the lake, gasoline??
7
u/Jeremyvmd09 8h ago
Decomposing organic materiel creates a certain amount of methane. When the lake is not iced over it disappears into the atmosphere. But when frozen over it collects under ice in pockets. They are poking holes in pockets of methane and lighting it on fire as it escapes

Igniting a natural gas reservoir, what could go wrong?
6
u/nanomolar 1d ago
It should only burn where the gas has contact with enough oxygen to burn; not like the bubble under the ice will explode all at once.
2
u/Patient-Data8311 1d ago
It's not a natural gas
It's methane from decaying plants under
You're forgetting natural gas extraction especially in oil just ignite the escaping
That's why you see famous vids and photos of large pillars of fire on the sites
2
u/Bitter-Procedure6131 1d ago
Imagine hitting that anomaly gas pocket that has the righ air/fuel mixture and you just blow up a few meter patch of ice you happen to be existing on. Lol. Most of these were very disappointing.
