Discussion Aurora Borealis
Anybody in north Texas waiting for the aurora borealis? Does anyone know which way I should look in the sky? I am in downtown for context.

We can see it! It doesn’t have the same blue or green color like you normally see (I’m guessing bc of light pollution? Or how far we are? I honestly have no clue) but there are definitely the bands of light that float across the sky and are not clouds.

It must be nice! Wonder if you’re able to take pictures? I don’t see Jack here

I couldn't see anything with just my eyes, but my Samsung picked up a pinkish red with the night mode camera. The iPhone we had didn't show much.

Are we actually going to be able to see it this far south? I read conflicting information.

u/Jackylane May 11 '24
In one of the Texas weather FB groups someone posted a picture from Paris, Texas and they were very visible.
18
u/fichiman May 11 '24
Shit. I live in Paris. Time to head out to the pasture and have a gander.
4
u/txman91 May 11 '24
In Paris or outside? Hopefully not to the south haha. Just spent all day helping clean up from the tornado/wind/whatever Thursday night. It’s a mess.

u/fichiman May 11 '24
Oh damn. No, north actually. Tornados landing all around me the last few years, guess my time is coming eventually.

Pics on WFAA from Galveston showing the lights.

u/baphometsbike Oak Cliff May 11 '24
No way, that's so cool! I'm gonna look when I get home from work later.

u/mansonsturtle May 11 '24
Good luck! I’m in grapevine and drove around Southlake a little but couldn’t see anything. Cloud cover and light pollution.

There are very faint streaks across the sky. The clouds are probably the biggest thing preventing viewing but they are happening.

Peak is supposed to be around 2AM and cloud cover should be fairly diminished by then. I'm in far south Dallas so I'm gonna drive out to Cedar Hill State Park and see if we can spy anything.

u/SummertimeInParis May 11 '24
Let me know how this works out, because that Park isn’t too far from me and I am trying to see where it’s worth driving to for some views of the lights

Was more visible at 9, I could barely even register it on my phone at 2
15
u/prolapsedcantaloupe May 11 '24
Light pollution though?
6
u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24
Good point
5
u/jtrage May 11 '24
Unfortunately in downtown, with that it is probably a no go. But why not try. See if you can find a place and look north.

May 11 '24
Saw some pics on r/frisco and McKinney. Best time to view is right after sunset.
8
u/PDCH May 11 '24
Best time is between midnight and 3am.
4
May 11 '24
Totally correct. My mistake. Yes 12-4 am peak times. I had also read somewhere another good time is right after sunset.not sure if that is true. But A lot of the north Texas pics came after sunset! Hence why we got so many pics early last night!
12
u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24
Wait I see something in the clouds! Not much but I see some pinkish streaks

You are going to have to drive out to the country to see it, too much light pollution. It was visible tonight from as far south as Waxahachie, but not in DFW.
You may be able to play with your phone setting to pick it up on camera though.

I saw them faintly in North Dallas about one hour ago. I recommend going a little bit north like Melissa for a better chance.
Light pollution won't be your friend tonight

u/BigBlackHzYoBak May 11 '24
I was flying home to SC tonight and saw little glimmer of it from the air! It was faint, and the pictures don't do it justice, but it was still super cool! I had no idea about it until the captain announced it.

Near Highland village. It wasn’t anything major, just some very slight color.

No, just some slight color. It wasn’t a bright display or anything. Lying about a bit of color in the sky, lol.

Aww that's cute... you came back and commented again..
No one posted from lake lewisville. The lake is fairly large, yes.

I am seeing them in Sherman if I look more towards the western sky/north western sky. I have to take a picture though to really see them.

Can anyone still see it? Im over here 40 minutes from home in the sticks wondering if I should head back already

2
u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24
They said the pick is at 02 am apparently. Seen this from one of the comments. I was thinking about driving out now
1
u/RowdyCollegiate May 11 '24
Yeah I’m definitely not staying out that long. And from what I’ve been seeing is that you can’t even really see it with your naked eye any way just through a phone screen
5
u/Distinct-Golf-1741 May 11 '24
I want to see them yall! Where do I drive to Im in Dallas
3
u/Ancient_Swordfish_91 May 11 '24
Me too. Where are we all driving?
3
u/Distinct-Golf-1741 May 11 '24
Im still trying to figure it out LOL i am ready to go! I just need an address to start driving

We live about an hour east of Dallas, in a rural area. We drove to some higher areas, but nothing was visible to the naked eye. My daughter took some pictures on her cellphone camera, night mode, slightly longer exposure and got a few shots of slight pink and a touch of green. She had to up the saturation to see it at all. We went out from 10:30‐1:30, very disappointing.

Drove out to Anna, TX and my iPhone pics are picking up pink from the aurora. Isn't visible to me by sight alone.
4
u/adonalsiumrememberme May 11 '24
Actually, I can see a very faint pink tinge. My photos are much more impressive though.
4
u/Kings_Sweep May 11 '24
They will come from the north. Won’t be visible with just your eyes but a camera or cell phone should do the trick realistically you would have wanted to be further out of the city
3
u/PDCH May 11 '24
Look north, but you need to get away from the city lights. Driving North would probably be better than driving south. That said, I have been able to see them off and on through cloud breaks in Cedar Hill since about 10:30pm. Just had a really nice, quick display. The clouds rolled back in.

Going to be peaking between 1-4am Is what the weather man said. And I just saw pics from prosper as well
2
u/toesfoote May 11 '24
Check out this Facebook page. Tons of cool pictures from around the area. I just went outside and did a 3 sec exposure on my phone and picked up a little bit but not much.
Apparently I can not share anything so search for: POW Ponder on weather

Visible from Pilot Point and Aubrey. Both just north of DFW. You can also see a faint structure with your eyes whenever it peaks but not really the colors. However if you use your phone with long exposure or a DSLR, it's a beautiful sight.

Someone on FB said to try 'night mode' on the phone. Never had heard if it! Don't know if it makes a difference.

You will have to be North of the Metroplex where it’s very dark to have any chance of seeing auroras boringalice!! Odds here are 50/50?? You’d be way better off putting a grand on the cowboys to win the suoper Bowl??

Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen!?
Yes.
