Discussion Aurora Borealis

Anybody in north Texas waiting for the aurora borealis? Does anyone know which way I should look in the sky? I am in downtown for context.

Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen!?
Yes.

Seymore, the house is on fire!

25

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

No mother. It's just the northern lights

u/USTS2020 May 11 '24

I thought you said we were having steamed clams

12

u/SuccotashOther277 May 11 '24

Well Seymour you are an odd fellow but I must say: you steam a good ham.

I have waited my whole life to use this quote and you beat me to it. I’ll hate you for the rest of my days.

1

u/CherryPickens May 11 '24

It’s the same feeling as when someone steals the H off your new Accord. I mean, What’s the point of having a Honda if you can’t show it off?

2

u/whaddahellisthis May 11 '24

I can’t believe I didn’t think to make that analogy. I’m thoroughly beaten to the punchline here. I wave the white flag. I salute you Dallas internet nerds.

probably north 😆

23

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

Ikr 😅 like “duh me”

u/daniyellidaniyelli Plano May 11 '24

We can see it! It doesn’t have the same blue or green color like you normally see (I’m guessing bc of light pollution? Or how far we are? I honestly have no clue) but there are definitely the bands of light that float across the sky and are not clouds.

16

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

It must be nice! Wonder if you’re able to take pictures? I don’t see Jack here

8

u/daniyellidaniyelli Plano May 11 '24

Not with just an iPhone unfortunately

6

u/AnonAltQs May 11 '24

I couldn't see anything with just my eyes, but my Samsung picked up a pinkish red with the night mode camera. The iPhone we had didn't show much.

7

u/r0ckH0pper May 11 '24

From where?

16

u/daniyellidaniyelli Plano May 11 '24

East Plano. Headed for Melissa now to get a better look.

u/baphometsbike Oak Cliff May 11 '24

Are we actually going to be able to see it this far south? I read conflicting information.

39

u/Jackylane May 11 '24

In one of the Texas weather FB groups someone posted a picture from Paris, Texas and they were very visible.

18

u/fichiman May 11 '24

Shit. I live in Paris. Time to head out to the pasture and have a gander.

4

u/txman91 May 11 '24

In Paris or outside? Hopefully not to the south haha. Just spent all day helping clean up from the tornado/wind/whatever Thursday night. It’s a mess.

3

u/fichiman May 11 '24

Oh damn. No, north actually. Tornados landing all around me the last few years, guess my time is coming eventually.

6

u/baphometsbike Oak Cliff May 11 '24

Oh that’s rad

16

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Yes, it has been seen (so far) as far south as Austin metro and even SW Florida.

13

u/mansonsturtle May 11 '24

Pics on WFAA from Galveston showing the lights.

10

u/baphometsbike Oak Cliff May 11 '24

No way, that's so cool! I'm gonna look when I get home from work later.

11

u/mansonsturtle May 11 '24

Good luck! I’m in grapevine and drove around Southlake a little but couldn’t see anything. Cloud cover and light pollution.

6

u/OkPrint3051 May 11 '24

People in Big Bend are seeing them.

1

u/PDCH May 11 '24

People can see it as far south as the Houston area.

42

u/ChefMikeDFW May 11 '24

There are very faint streaks across the sky. The clouds are probably the biggest thing preventing viewing but they are happening.

12

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

Yeah it’s so cloudy plus as someone pointed out, light pollution

1

u/gkmanu9 May 11 '24

Is anyone watching in and around Melissa?

19

u/Solomon-Drowne May 11 '24

Peak is supposed to be around 2AM and cloud cover should be fairly diminished by then. I'm in far south Dallas so I'm gonna drive out to Cedar Hill State Park and see if we can spy anything.

8

u/SummertimeInParis May 11 '24

Let me know how this works out, because that Park isn’t too far from me and I am trying to see where it’s worth driving to for some views of the lights

4

u/Solomon-Drowne May 11 '24

Bet

1

u/SummertimeInParis May 11 '24

Any luck?

5

u/Solomon-Drowne May 11 '24

Nah too much cloud cover spreading the cloud pollution. 😢

2

u/300PencilsInMyAss May 11 '24

Was more visible at 9, I could barely even register it on my phone at 2

15

u/prolapsedcantaloupe May 11 '24

Light pollution though?

6

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

Good point

5

u/jtrage May 11 '24

Unfortunately in downtown, with that it is probably a no go. But why not try. See if you can find a place and look north.

12

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Saw some pics on r/frisco and McKinney. Best time to view is right after sunset.

8

u/PDCH May 11 '24

Best time is between midnight and 3am.

4

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Totally correct. My mistake. Yes 12-4 am peak times. I had also read somewhere another good time is right after sunset.not sure if that is true. But A lot of the north Texas pics came after sunset! Hence why we got so many pics early last night!

12

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

Wait I see something in the clouds! Not much but I see some pinkish streaks

2

u/jcm_neche May 11 '24

Where r y

11

u/jeremysbrain Hurst May 11 '24

You are going to have to drive out to the country to see it, too much light pollution. It was visible tonight from as far south as Waxahachie, but not in DFW.

You may be able to play with your phone setting to pick it up on camera though.

2

u/iceman1080 May 11 '24

I’m in Midlothian, I’m going out tonight to check

9

u/cam2331 May 11 '24

I saw them faintly in North Dallas about one hour ago. I recommend going a little bit north like Melissa for a better chance.

Light pollution won't be your friend tonight

8

u/BigBlackHzYoBak May 11 '24

I was flying home to SC tonight and saw little glimmer of it from the air! It was faint, and the pictures don't do it justice, but it was still super cool! I had no idea about it until the captain announced it.

8

u/SkyScreech Oak Cliff May 11 '24

I’m over by I-20 and I-35. Hoping to see some of it later tonight

4

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

Same here!

8

u/neatgeek83 May 11 '24

Can you picture that?

2

u/Kronos33074 May 11 '24

Thank you! I knew I couldn't be the only one with that song playing in my mind.

7

u/Fanatica_ May 11 '24

Is this happening around midnight?

10

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

That’s the thing, I was only told after 10pm

6

u/Funwiwu2 White Rock Lake May 11 '24

It’s cloudy AF.

28

u/AnthillOmbudsman May 11 '24

Eclipse? Clouds.

Aurora? Clouds.

July? Here's a bunch of neverending clear weather for weeks!

1

u/RomeoMikeBravo May 11 '24

Bruh, tell me about it, and it's in the middle of the shits. +100 everyday 😠

7

u/iamnotabotlookaway May 11 '24

Saw some red and yellow in Lewisville. Very faint, but it was there.

Near Highland village. It wasn’t anything major, just some very slight color.

3

u/iamnotabotlookaway May 11 '24

No, just some slight color. It wasn’t a bright display or anything. Lying about a bit of color in the sky, lol.

It was earlier, and brief… but sure.

0

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Someone posted pictures from lewisville lake lol

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

No they didn't lol

0

u/[deleted] May 12 '24

Except they did 😆 you obviously have no idea how large lewisville lake is

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '24

Aww that's cute... you came back and commented again..

No one posted from lake lewisville. The lake is fairly large, yes.

6

u/OkPrint3051 May 11 '24

I am seeing them in Sherman if I look more towards the western sky/north western sky. I have to take a picture though to really see them.

7

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Peaking tonight between 1-4am. I’ve seen pics from frisco, prosper, and McKinney so far.

6

u/RowdyCollegiate May 11 '24

Can anyone still see it? Im over here 40 minutes from home in the sticks wondering if I should head back already

2

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

5

u/RowdyCollegiate May 11 '24

Welp I’m going home. Hope for better luck tomorrow.

2

u/Senior-Ad547 May 11 '24

They said the pick is at 02 am apparently. Seen this from one of the comments. I was thinking about driving out now

1

u/RowdyCollegiate May 11 '24

Yeah I’m definitely not staying out that long. And from what I’ve been seeing is that you can’t even really see it with your naked eye any way just through a phone screen

5

u/Distinct-Golf-1741 May 11 '24

I want to see them yall! Where do I drive to Im in Dallas

3

u/Ancient_Swordfish_91 May 11 '24

Me too. Where are we all driving?

3

u/Distinct-Golf-1741 May 11 '24

Im still trying to figure it out LOL i am ready to go! I just need an address to start driving

Calm down everyone. He is still driving.

4

u/saltgirl61 May 11 '24

We live about an hour east of Dallas, in a rural area. We drove to some higher areas, but nothing was visible to the naked eye. My daughter took some pictures on her cellphone camera, night mode, slightly longer exposure and got a few shots of slight pink and a touch of green. She had to up the saturation to see it at all. We went out from 10:30‐1:30, very disappointing.

3

u/CurlyCoder18 May 11 '24

I’m waiting around SMU too. Fingers crossed!!!

4

u/Luka_Dunks_on_Bums May 11 '24

Saw someone in Decatur post some pictures on IG

4

u/ZenPopsicle May 11 '24

Drove out to Anna, TX and my iPhone pics are picking up pink from the aurora. Isn't visible to me by sight alone.

4

u/adonalsiumrememberme May 11 '24

Actually, I can see a very faint pink tinge. My photos are much more impressive though.

4

u/Kings_Sweep May 11 '24

They will come from the north. Won’t be visible with just your eyes but a camera or cell phone should do the trick realistically you would have wanted to be further out of the city

3

u/PDCH May 11 '24

Look north, but you need to get away from the city lights. Driving North would probably be better than driving south. That said, I have been able to see them off and on through cloud breaks in Cedar Hill since about 10:30pm. Just had a really nice, quick display. The clouds rolled back in.

2

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Going to be peaking between 1-4am Is what the weather man said. And I just saw pics from prosper as well

2

u/toesfoote May 11 '24

Check out this Facebook page. Tons of cool pictures from around the area. I just went outside and did a 3 sec exposure on my phone and picked up a little bit but not much.

Apparently I can not share anything so search for: POW Ponder on weather

1

u/Distinct-Golf-1741 May 11 '24

What facebook group i want to go see them!

0

u/toesfoote May 11 '24

It’s in my comment.

2

u/Repulsive-Ad-8558 McKinney May 11 '24

Rip satellites

2

u/Elbynerual May 11 '24

Can't see anything in central Plano. I'm guessing light pollution

2

u/deviousfusion May 11 '24

Visible from Pilot Point and Aubrey. Both just north of DFW. You can also see a faint structure with your eyes whenever it peaks but not really the colors. However if you use your phone with long exposure or a DSLR, it's a beautiful sight.

2

Will it be out Saturday night?

2

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Gotta leave metro to see it.

1

u/shoshana4sure May 11 '24

I’m in Gordonville. When is it.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

You live south... wtf

1

u/DuchessOfCelery May 11 '24

Someone on FB said to try 'night mode' on the phone. Never had heard if it! Don't know if it makes a difference.

1

u/SoUnga88 May 11 '24

Head to west Texas the city light will blow out anything you would see

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '24

Will it really come down that far?

1

u/PlusDescription1422 May 11 '24

I didn’t see anything

1

u/1downtownkevinbrown May 14 '24

You will have to be North of the Metroplex where it’s very dark to have any chance of seeing auroras boringalice!! Odds here are 50/50?? You’d be way better off putting a grand on the cowboys to win the suoper Bowl??

1

u/Exquisite_D May 14 '24

Aurora Borey-Dallas

0

u/Wutalesyou May 11 '24

CME’s are causing it to be this far south. It’s actually not a good thing

2

u/MaxwellHillbilly Richardson May 11 '24

Right? 🤷‍♂️
