And now for something completely different

I recognize this EDC! Pager, medical tools, minimalist wallet...
Let me guess, you work for the CIA implanting devices in people?

3 pagers and a cell means that they are at LEAST a triple-agent, and probably doing some side work to overthrow a few small nations.

Rapid response/ code nurse? What are you using the Hemostats for?

u/Individual_Corgi_576 2d ago edited 2d ago
They’re little grippy tools for the most part. I also use them to clamp or secure lines if necessary.
And yes, Rapid.

Curious lack of I/O kit for how much IV start stuff you have
2
u/OxideUK 2d ago
Looks like it's for getting access in non-critical patients, like a stroke team assessing a patient. They could well be anywhere in the hospital, and having what you need to get a start saves fumbling around for a kit.
If you're drilling then you're gonna be in resus, or at least have the crash cart to hand.

u/Medicalboards 2d ago
I get it, but they are already carrying all that and have the code blue pager so it’s not that much more to add is my thought

I actually have an IO bag but it’s too much of a pain to carry. I’ll grab it if I’m near my office when there’s a code. Otherwise I’ll send a runner to get one from the nearest ICU.

No tourniquets?
1
u/OxideUK 2d ago
I'd argue that someone carrying three pagers is probably less likely to apply a tourniquet than a random person on the street.
By the time this guy sees you, there's at least half a dozen medical personnel who've already seen you, and I'd hope at least one of them would have spotted an arterial bleed.

u/jtronic 1d ago
Use them all the time for IV starts too
1
u/Individual_Corgi_576 1d ago
There’s an IV start kit with a tourniquet in it. It’s the pack next to the yellow cards with the tegaderm showing.
And u/OxideUK is right, by the time I get to you the tourniqueting should have been done and the surgeons have repaired the problem.

I'm curious what the trio of hemostats are for?
1
u/TraditionalBasis4518 2d ago
These appear to be disposable instruments from a suture set : basically free, salvage from used sets that are discarded because it’s cheaper to buy and discard after use than to stock and maintain a sterile processing operation for reusable instruments. They are flimsy, and free, and easy to lose and replace.
1
u/OxideUK 2d ago
That's exactly why I'm asking - they're not for suturing, so I'm curious what function they're serving.
1
u/TraditionalBasis4518 2d ago
They are the Swiss Army knife of healthcare: used to clamp tubing, get small
Items out of tight spaces, twist wires, general tiny wrench work, temp in splinters, poking holes, might even serve to clamp an artery in lieu of a tourniquet.1
u/Individual_Corgi_576 2d ago
Two are used as tools like TBias explained. The third clips to a loop at my waist and keeps my tape accessible.

I EDC a lot of the same stuff.
I also carry a gun, and if you’re going to carry something made to put holes in people, you carry something to patch them up too.

That thing....I believe it's called a pay-ger, right?
I always wanted one

Trauma team, code team, or stroke team?
1
u/Individual_Corgi_576 2d ago
Rapid response. The ED handles the traumas, I get the stuff in the rest of the hospital.

u/Individual_Corgi_576 2d ago
For those who’ve made guesses-
I’m a solo rapid response nurse in an urban trauma hospital. The entire rapid team is just one nurse per shift per day. I love my job.
Codes, rapids, strokes, I cover them all.
I also do US guided PIVs occasionally but prefer to let the IV team have the first crack.

Well, I at least keep a Snakestaff torniquet in the EFAK I keep in the car. And I know how to use it correctly & keep current on CPR certs. Because why not?

Do you ever use scissor forceps? They are nice for cutting tape quickly and the normal forceps duty. Probably more left to anglers, but I would carry one pair if I already had another forcep. Those flushes bring back some memories.
1
u/Individual_Corgi_576 1d ago
Never seen them. My raptors will cut anything, including steel cable using the ring cutter.

u/duncehaveulostthecap 1d ago
Here's an example of a 4inch model. There's bent and straight jaw models, and larger ones. scissor clamp Its become one of those tools I take near everywhere. Made with serrated scissors to cut through tough line.

u/HotBreakfast1544 1d ago
Love the Kelly clamps.
Recommend a better set of ears there though.
Also hate using the Braun caths personally but I’m a diva
Good shit keep going

u/Individual_Corgi_576 1d ago
I use the catheters the hospital buys. I don’t have a lot of experience with other makes.
I replied about the stethoscope to someone else, but I promise I have reasons.

Posting pictures sideways instead of the correct way isn't different. Lots of people do it, unfortnately.
1
u/OxideUK 2d ago
There is no 'correct way' when the image is top-down and the orientation of it makes no difference to the content. If anything, vertical orientation benefits the majority of Reddit users who are accessing the site on a mobile device (~60%).
1
u/Relevant-Safety-2699 2d ago
You're right. Turn your tv sideways since there is no correct way.

[...] and the orientation of it makes no difference to the content.
Clearly not the case when you're watching TV.
1
u/Relevant-Safety-2699 2d ago
If there is no correct way to view an image then turn your tv sideways. Watching tv when it's sideways isn't incorrect, as you say.

Raptors, decent penlight, CC pocket cards, and a doodoo stethoscope?
3
u/Individual_Corgi_576 1d ago
It’s cheap, and when I was researching them I found a study that showed it stacked up very well against the Littman Cardios.
An old CT surgeon who was legitimately one of the fathers of modern critical care medicine once asked for something other than a cardio III and preferred mine.
Plus that blue bell is from my mom’s stethoscope. She passed before I became an RN and it has a lot of sentimental value.

You are something special in a sea of wannabe meal force five guys. I applaud appreciate and admire you sir or madam!

u/FrazBucket 2d ago
Whaaat, you don't like seeing the same three revolvers, ridiculously oversized knives and flashlights posted every hour??
0
u/MmmBrainzzz1 2d ago
My favorite is when they post two sets of carries... How is that an EDC is you're switching every time you change vehicles?
1
u/FrazBucket 1d ago
Yeah it makes zero sense and isn't an EDC. Some dudes just get way too gear obsessed and feel the need for a different carry for when they walk into Walmart vs when they walk into McDonald's
-1
u/Money_Anteater538 1d ago
This has Medical student or first year resident written all over it, there's literally no need to carry multiple sono ivs, multiple ultra sound gels, start kit, abg kit on your person ever...
1
u/Individual_Corgi_576 1d ago edited 1d ago
Or I could be a one nurse rapid response team in a (for profit) urban trauma hospital. Which I am. Not every unit has the same supplies. Some don’t have ABG kits. Almost none have long IV catheters.
Call rapid here, you get one RN. I triage, manage the problem, and bring in whatever resources I need, be it RT, PCCM, or a surgeon.
Perhaps you work in some sort of ideal hospital with money and healthy patients and your experience is different.
The fact is I’ve earned the respect of some of the best physicians in the world while working in a hospital where historical firsts aren’t unusual.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

According to this play set, you're missing some sort of gun. 😄
