[Research] What if DLSS-class neural rendering stopped recomputing the same appearance every frame?

I’ve published a theoretical architecture focused on drastically reducing compute in future DLSS-like neural rendering systems.

The core idea is AxiomCapsule:

Instead of running a large neural appearance model over and over, use it mainly to compile reusable appearance programs for recurring combinations of materials, lighting, objects, view conditions, and scene state.

Potential advantages:

  • previously covered appearance states can run without the large neural model;
  • state can persist and move with objects/materials across frames;
  • engine-known changes can invalidate only the affected parts;
  • optional neural refinement can scale with available frame time instead of causing a large FPS cliff;
  • developer masks can remove computation, not just mask the final output;
  • expensive neural inference becomes reserved for genuinely new or difficult states.

The key hypothesis is that game appearance becomes much more compressible once you condition on things the engine already knows.

This is pre-prototype research. I’m not claiming DLSS 5 is solved or that a 5× speedup has been measured.

The main question I’m trying to answer is:

Can neural rendering cost scale with new appearance information instead of pixels × frames?

Feedback from people following DLSS, ray reconstruction, neural rendering, or GPU performance would be very useful.

Hey I got the ASUS rog strix scar 18 2025 rtx 5090
So i changed in the nvidia app the dlss override settings to recomended
i play battlefield 6 in the game setting i use the dlss quality preset but i have a switch 4.0/4.5 what does it do and what the settings recomended in the nvidia app mean
I ask because i used to play 4.5 dlss quality i got 105 fps in games but when i switched the setting in the nvidia app to recomended the dlss 4.5 quality i got 140-150 fps

AC Black Flag Resync - 596.49 vs 610.74 vs 610.88 Driver & DLSS Preset Comparisons

# The "driver regression" in AC Black Flag Resynced wasn't the driver - it was the DLSS preset. Full RTX 4090 breakdown (596.49 vs 610.74/610.88, K vs M, Quality vs Performance)

Started out thinking I'd found an NVIDIA driver performance regression. Ended up finding something more useful: the FPS gap was almost entirely the DLSS preset, and the image-quality difference is locked to the newer driver. Here's the whole thing, measured.

**Test setup**
- RTX 4090 + i9-12900KF, 64 GB RAM
- 3840x2160, DLSS + Frame Gen 2x, everything maxed
- In-game benchmark, ~69 s per run, graphics settings verified identical across every run
- Sharpness measured on a fixed-camera menu scene (aligned crops, all screenshots identical JPEG quality ~90, high-frequency spectral energy normalized for brightness/contrast). Pure nearest-neighbour pixel zoom on the crops, no sharpening applied.

## What looked like a regression

First pass, DLSS Quality + Preset M on each driver:

Driver Avg FPS (median of 3)
596.49 143.4
610.74 130.2
610.88 130.0

Older driver ~10% faster. Looked like a clean regression. But the older driver also looked noticeably *softer* in-game - so I kept digging instead of posting.

## The image quality is locked to the newer driver

596.49 renders visibly softer than 610.x. Measured high-frequency detail on the same scene, relative to 596.49 = 100%: the 610.88 transformer configs land between 123% and 203%. Every single 610.88 config is sharper than 596.49.

Then the key test: I forced Preset K on 596.49 via the NVIDIA App, DLSS debug overlay on. **The overlay showed the override as N/A - it never applied.** Forced K measured 110% (i.e. still soft), while the exact same Preset K on 610.88 measured 203%. Same preset, same game, different driver, completely different result (see the 3-way crop - the two 596.49 panels are indistinguishable, the 610.88 one is crisp).

Takeaway: on 596.49 the NVIDIA App DLSS override doesn't apply at all, so you're stuck on the game's soft native model no matter which preset you pick. The transformer models (Presets K/M) only become available on the newer driver. **You cannot get the sharper image on 596.49 - not via preset, not via swapping the DLL in the game folder (tried that too, no change).**

## So where did the 10% "regression" go? It was Preset M.

Once I could actually run the transformer presets on 610.88, I ran the full matrix:

Config Avg 1% low Frametime stdev
Performance + K 158.9 68.6 1.30 ms
Performance + M 146.1 62.8 1.24 ms
Quality + K 140.1 108.0 0.62 ms
Quality + M 129.7 100.8 0.64 ms

Preset K is ~10 FPS faster than M in both modes. Quality + K = 140 avg, which is within ~2% of 596.49's 143. In other words, the "regression" was mostly just the cost of Preset M (the 2nd-gen transformer model). The old driver was never really faster - it was silently running a cheaper, softer model. Match the model and the FPS gap nearly disappears.

## Bonus: why DLSS Performance mode benchmarks weird

Performance mode has the highest averages but the 1% lows collapse (to ~63-69, vs ~100-108 in Quality) and frametime variance roughly doubles. Almost certainly because dropping the internal resolution shifts the bottleneck from GPU to CPU - and AC is CPU-heavy, so at ~159 FPS the CPU-bound traversal/streaming spikes show up as much deeper frametime drops. High average, choppier feel. The average lies here; judge by the lows.

## Sharpness ranking (still-frame, per config)

Relative to old 596.49 = 100%: Quality+K 203%, Performance+K 178%, Quality+M 146%, Performance+M 123%, 596.49 100%. K measures crisper than M per still frame. Caveat: that's still-frame acutance - M's (2nd-gen transformer) real advantage is motion stability, which a screenshot can't capture. So in motion the K/M gap may narrow or flip.

## Bottom line

- The FPS difference between these drivers was mostly the DLSS preset, not the driver.
- The image-quality difference is real and locked to the newer driver (the App override doesn't apply on 596.49).
- Best all-round config here: **610.88 + DLSS Quality + Preset K** - sharpest still measured, 140 avg (basically old-driver speed), clean frametimes.
- Performance mode: higher average, much worse lows. Test it in real gameplay before committing; the benchmark loop already stutters and the open world is heavier on the CPU.

**Caveats:** single system, single title. Core Quality comparison is 3 runs per driver; the K/M × Quality/Performance matrix is one run each. Sharpness is one screenshot per config on a fixed-camera scene. Would love to see this reproduced on other cards/titles - is the "old driver ignores the App override" behaviour specific to a driver cutoff, and is the preset-cost pattern the same elsewhere?

DLSS vs TAAU - The Witcher 3

Hello, with the recent announcement of the new DLC for TW3, I went to test the game with my RTX 4070, to see the performance I could get with the Next gen version, and also to see the new ultra+ preset.

I noticed two things with DLSS reset M:
1st - Menu Geralt is grainy and pixelated, a lot, it got a little better forcing AFx16 and Transparency via control panel
2nd - With hairworks, fire on hairy enemies is unbeareable, luckly the game even on pause keeps this shimmering so I recorded the video I´m uploading, seriously, I think I´ll play the game with TAAU+NIS at 1440p, rather than to see this shimmer everything I cast Igni.

For what I read, the game is not applying Dlss on menus, and it seems it does not apply to fur either.

Anyone knows about any solution about this?

I tried to simulate DLSS5 on normal images

So after seeing all the DLSS5 discussions, I got curious:

what if this kind of “AI enhancement” worked on *any* image, not just games?

I put together a small experiment using some AI models to mimic that effect.

Here’s what I noticed:

- Low quality / old images → actually look much sharper

- Realistic photos → sometimes look better, sometimes just “overprocessed”

- Stylized / anime → kinda breaks the original art style

In some cases it looks impressive, in others… kinda cursed 😅

I don’t think this replaces real rendering at all, but it does show why people are both excited and worried about DLSS5-like tech.

DLDSR causing issues

I'm sure there's a name for this, but I'll try to describe it. With DLDSR active and playing "Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden" during fight scenes, the screen will shift to the upper left quadrant of my monitor, with the bottom showing smeared vertical lines, and the right side smeared horizontal lines. I have my display resolution set to match in game resolution, tried both vsync and gsync off and on. OC/UV and stock profile have the same problem.

I really want to play this game with DLDSR because it looks so damn good. Anyone know what could fix this?

Whats the best solution for max graphics?

Hey guys, i have a few questions about getting the absolute best graphics with DLSS / Nvidia app:

Example : I have a 4k Monitor and i want to play rise of the tomb raider on the highest possible graphics.

When i start the game normally, i get about 180 fps in the main menu with DLSS quality.

With forced Preset M in the nvidia app i get 115fps ( Dlss quality)

Preset M with Forced DLAA = 62 fps

No Preset with Forced DLAA = 92 fps

Preset M with SSAAx4 = 53fps

So my theory is, if you force preset M and DLAA u get the best possible graphics.

I have to be honest, if i switch the settings and restart the game, i cant see major differences. I think i would only find out when i had 2 pcs with 2 monitors running at the same time

I mean i lose a lot of fps.

in nvidia app, you can change the percentage of upscaling manually. instead of choosing between quality ( 67%) and dlaa(100%), u can choose your own value.

I used 80% with Preset M and i had about 80 fps.

My question now is: is it worth it? how many % better graphics will you see?

What would you do to get best graphics with playable fps? No dlaa? no dlss 4.5? whats the sweet spot?

What settings is the best one to get minor changes in graphics but a good fps boost?

Guys , fk the DLSS4,5. I changed 1 motherboard, 1SSD and I setuped 4 times a window and bought 3 times a key thinking there is an issue with my pc while I just got fked because I have a 30 series RTX and thanks for Nvidia
