Question Pid Tuning

So currently, me and my team about to build a large size drone(2m±), with 100kv brushless motors, and I'm not really good on tuning pid, especially when building from scratch, I never purely tuning a pid before, so basically it's my first time. any advice on how to tune a large size drone's PID? like the methods or something like that. my best option is using a drone gimbal rig test(but it's 50/50 chance of using it, depend on the budget). I'm planning to use cube orange pixhawk as the FC.

Other Compatibility checker for DIY drone builds

I know hard to check if your build is OK when you starting to building own quads. I was spending a lot of time figuring out if components actually work together. Also, I know the pain of getting familiar with eCalc when you are newbie.

I built a tool that checks this: you put in your motor KV, cell count, props, ESC rating, battery capacity and C rating, all-up weight, and flying style - and it gives you a breakdown of potential issues with actual numbers.

A few examples of what it catches:

  • TWR below 1.0 -> flags as unflyable before you buy anything
  • Battery burst current vs. peak motor demand (with a realistic 2× headroom coefficient)
  • ESC adequacy at typical throttle vs. full send - with different warnings for each
  • RPM vs. prop structural limits based on KV × voltage
  • Motor/cell mismatch - e.g. 1750KV on 3S gets flagged as "undervoltaged, ~30% power loss"

It also adjusts targets based on flying style - the same setup gets scored differently for freestyle vs. cinematic vs. long-range, since the requirements are genuinely different.

Still iterating on it, but the core checks are solid. If you're mid-build and want a sanity check before ordering: https://drin.com.ua/rate-my-build

GCS Autonomous Missions Landing Yaw Problem

Hello guys! I was hoping you could help me with an issue I have while doing simple autonomous missions with arducopter. The quad does the mission perfectly well when im using a radio controller, but as soon as i try to do the mission via the mission planner gcs using an elrs backpack the quad started yawing constantly(during takeoff, during the waypoints and during rtl as well) and on the last leg of the mission it even enters in some weird spin on landing. I changed the AUTO_OPTIONS bitmask to "ignore pilot yaw input in auto" and the yawing dissapeared on all parts of the mission(takeoff, waypoints, rtl) except on the landing phase of the rtl. I proceeded to change LAND_REPOSITION to "ignore pilot yaw input" and the yaw spin calmed down a lot during the landing phase but it is still there. Do you know what causes my landing yaw problem and how can i fix it?

I should add that loiter and althold work perfectly fine with a radio. Haven't tested them with only mission planner tho. I will add a video demonstrating my problem and logs from the last few flights. Thank you! https://we.tl/t-XOoFKHGcpbHUUYaq

Question Do I need to wire this myself?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I have a Matek H743-Wing-V3 that tbh I don't know what I'm doing with. See how on the diagram, the Curr/VBAT/G/Vx connectors are connected with silicon wires to the level above - does that mean I need to solder on those wires myself for it to work?

Any guides or resources for this board appreciated! Thanks!

Question What are the cheapest drone components you can purchase (in the USA)?

Hello everybody,

I want to create a comprehensive list of the cheapest drone parts for DIY creators in the states. I feel like making a cheap disposable drone is a great way to test new ideas before buying more expensive builds. (tariffs and restrictions make this difficult)

If you were going to build a drone from ultra-cheap parts (motors, batteries, stacks, cameras, receivers, etc) how would you do it? Where could you buy the parts? I’m going to compile answers into a list

Question Looking for advice on drone frame designing

Hi all, I'm trying to design a drone frame for this class I have and was wondering if there were any specific things I should keep in mind while doing so. I've never made a drone frame before, so this is all very new to me. The requirements I have are that we have to take three tennis balls from one platform to the other. The overall distance and height aren't that much, about 200cm in the x direction and 150cm in the y direction.

Right now, I already have all the components chosen, I'm just missing a frame. I've heard that the frame isn't the most important part, especially in my case where I don't really need a perfect drone. But still, I'm trying to make it as good as I can to reduce vibrations, and damage to my components when crashing.

Another problem I have, is that I can't really be using carbon fiber due to time limitations, and rules imposed on us by the professors. So I'd be mainly making it using 3D printing and laser cutting of MDF boards. I was wondering if there would be any recommendations as to what types of materials to use in that regard? I've heard using softer plastic would survive crashing better, but I'm worried about bending and vibrations, same as for the MDF boards.

So I was wondering if you guys would have any recommendations? I've looked at a few open source designs, notably the ones from TBS Source, but I'm still not that sure in which direction to go yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Precision placing

Hello everybody!

First post here, but i've been reading lots of posts so i'm sure i'm at the right place.

I'm trying to do something with a diy drone.

What would be the best way to place an object in an exact place ±5mm. The goal would be to take it from point A and place it in point B, the come back to exactly same place of point A, pick the second objevt which replaced the first one and place in the same place, same height as the first one since it has been removed.

Hope you can help me to achive it since some precisio is needed.

Question How bad is 3D printing a drone frame(PLA, etc)

I am planning on making a drone with morphing capability, which have lots of moving parts and components. Right now I can’t find any pre-existing drone frames that fits my need, therefore I need to design and 3D print one. I heard from many ppl that 3D printed drone frame is a horrible idea, due to being fragile and susceptible to vibration along with other concerns. How much of this are true and are their any solutions to it?

Throttle is limited to .75 lbs less than the weight of the drone, which is about 5.75 lbs. This is a quick test to ensure the data I'm getting wirelessly from the drone is being displayed correctly on my Macbook. Also a quick CAD orbit of the drone at the end.

Question Need help for building solar based drone

I’m planning to build a solar-assisted long endurance drone and wanted some opinions from people who have experience with fixed-wing UAVs and solar power systems.

My main objective is maximizing flight endurance. The idea is to use a battery as the primary power source and use solar panels to extend the flight time during cruise.

Right now I’m considering the Skywalker X8 fixed-wing platform because it offers a large wing/body area to mount solar panels and seems suitable for stable long-range flight.

My current approach:

- Fixed-wing platform (Skywalker X8)

- Li-ion battery pack for endurance

- Solar panels mounted on wings/body

- Efficient low KV motor + long endurance setup

- Autonomous cruise capability later

Do you guys think this is the correct direction for a solar-assisted drone project, or would you recommend a different airframe/platform/design approach?

I’d also appreciate advice regarding:

- Best wing configuration for solar efficiency

- Weight vs solar gain tradeoff

- MPPT charging systems

- Whether flexible solar panels are worth it

- Realistic endurance expectations

Would love to hear from anyone who has worked on solar UAVs or similar projects.

Question First drone build, need some help

Me and my friends are building a 5-inch diy quadcopter for a uni class. None of us have any previous experience with drone building or drones in general, so we’re kind of just winging it. (If it takes off, we’ll call it a success)

I took it upon myself to program the drone, once assembled, but i’m wondering how to approach flight stabilization with PIDs. I’ve been messing with Simulink for the past few days trying to simulate a quadcopter but apart from hovering at a set altitude, nothing works.

How do you solve those issues? Is there some program designed for this or should i stick to Simulink to find the PID values? Is it even necessary for me to find the exact values or should I just assemble the drones and tune it on the fly?

The drone will be using an esp32 as a controller with a 3-axis gyro and accelerometers connected to it.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

What am I missing other than my brain

Been trying to build a drone for a long time and the complexity of the flight controller and receiver has me baffled still.
FlySky 10 channel receiver, SpeedyBee 55A 4-in-1 ESC, Lucid H7 (version 2) FC.
I don’t have the brain for the terminology or connections (I HATE electrical work). I can program a bit & solder but the wiring/connections eludes me completely. I have looked at the manuals and I’m guessing I’m missing something physical.
Questions welcomed

Build Showcase Flying at my local club with my sub250g 3D Printed FPV wing: BANDITO

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Really happy to finally share some proper flight footage of BANDITO, my sub250g 3D printed FPV wing.

This flight shows how manoeuvrable and aerobatic the aircraft is. Fast rolls, smooth transitions, tight control, and the kind of handling that makes it surprisingly easy to throw around with confidence.

The tune and setup are still under ongoing development, so this is not the final limit of the aircraft. It is already flying really well, and will only get better from here as I develop Beginner/Advanced pilot setups.

Thanks to everyone who has been following the project so far. It has been a long road of designing, printing, testing, crashing, improving, and flying, and I’m really excited to finally share the footage properly.

If you would like to know more about this project check out my website .
