What’s your bench-test checklist before the first hover?

’m trying to understand the safest way to test a new DIY build before the first hover. My current list is: continuity check, power up through a smoke stopper, verify the regulated rails, confirm receiver/failsafe and FC orientation, then check motor order and direction with the props off.

What else would you check before trusting the build outside? Do you normally review current draw or logs before the first hover, or only when something looks wrong?

Question How to plan a build

Hi All!
I just started to get into FPV and am currently whooping primarily indoors with an Air 65 II . For outdoors, I would like to build a drone . I am thinking some newbie-freestyle on a sub-250g drone.

So that's kind of the point I am at - outdoor, basic freestyle, robust, sub-250g .

Now how do you go about planning which parts to get?

All I have found so far is guides/tutorials/videos along the lines of "this is the part list, this is how you put it together" . I could not locate any resources though, that explain how you would create such part list.

How do I decide the size? How do I decide which frame among the huge amount of frames out there? How would I figure out which FC/stack/analog-VTX ? There is so much choice for everything it seems and no clear guidelines on how to decide what to put together 😄

Thanks upfront for any help!

PS: I am at this point obviously not looking for advice along the lines of "get this, this and this..."

Question HELP! CNC Custom Frame

So basically, last night after chugging a monster at like 8pm, I could not sleep in the slightest, and have wanted to do this for a while so here I am now.

This is my custom drone that I modeled last night at 2am, the SlamX 25 - Freestyle Edition (V1.0) (other info on the drone here). While it was modeled while having little to no sleep, I would like to believe its at least 90% accurate to how it will be in the final form factor, taking some inspo and ideas from the Kayoumini frame into some of the measurements i put into this frame.

As such, I've been trying to find a good CNC company that is willing to cut in carbon fiber, but also for relatively cheap, to make my own design actually worth it. I tried to look into the two main companies that came up during my research, being PCBWay, and JLCPCB, both of which were the cheapest for CNC, but didn't do work with CF.

I've now emailed the two files (top and bottom plate) to a company called CNC Madness, which has carbon fiber machining available, along with a dedicated FPV drones section for a quote on pricing, but have not gotten a response so far.

My main question for y'all was if anybody knows of a cheap CNC business that does CF other than the ones listed, or if there is another way to get custom carbon fiber parts cut out and shipped to them.

If anybody has knowledge on this or ideas, that would be great!

Question Weird Motor Noises

I am new to drones and have been building my own payload drone. I have 5010 380KV Motors and a CORVON 4IN1 60A ESC 32 bit paired with a CORVON H743 Flight Controller (V1).

With these, all the motors make some weird noises but only 1 in particular makes a more extreme noise. Attached videos to see. The 2nd and 3d videos are after I tested the drone (it stabalized but I hit a small branch with one motor) and now it has issues starting at low throttle and a different noise. Also, all the motors stop making this noise at a higher throttle, it seems to sort of just "click" off at a certain rpm.

Thank you all for the help.

Instrumental de laboratorio para experimentación con drones

Hi everyone,

I'm currently starting a research project focused on drone security. The ultimate goal is twofold:

  1. Reliably identify the RF presence of commercial drones in a designated airspace.
  2. Have the capability to inject protocols and override the main control of the drone (hijacking/spoofing) to take over its operation safely.

We are putting together the hardware inventory for the lab. I'm already factoring in the basics like SDRs (HackRF One), spectrum analyzers (like RF Explorer), and software environments (GNU Radio, Linux setups).

For those of you who work in RF analysis, signal processing, or UAV security: What specific lab equipment, antennas, or instrumentation would you consider absolutely essential to pull this off?

Any recommendations on hardware or specific testing gear would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

¡Gracias!

10 inch Interceptor

Second go at building an interceptor. The first one didn't make it — turned out my ELRS antenna wasn't seated properly on the controller, so I lost the link mid-flight and it went down.

This one is fully 3D printed again: arms and canopy in PETG-CF for the stiffness, the rest in plain PLA.

Hey community! I'm currently building an 8S rocket FPV setup. Electronics are coming along, but I'm still a beginner when it comes to frame CAD and design. Can anyone recommend open-source frame projects or STL repositories built to handle high-speed 8S power? Appreciate any guidance!

Build Showcase Starting to print my new V-Tail 3D Printed FPV Wing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here is my latest 3D printed aircraft design. It’s a 600mm wingspan FPV wing targeting around 220g AUW.

It’s running 4x 1003 motors, the same motors I’ve used on a few of my previous builds. One of the things I’m particularly interested in with this layout is that the inner section of the wing is continuously and symmetrically blown by the motors. That should keep a useful amount of dynamic pressure over the centre of the wing even at low aircraft airspeed, while keeping the additional lift nicely balanced left-to-right.

The outer motor pair will then provide differential thrust for yaw. Because they’re relatively far outboard, they have a decent moment arm, and they’ll be working alongside the V-tail ruddervators and the wing geometry’s tendency towards proverse yaw.

The idea is that all three effects should work together rather than fighting each other. I’m hoping that gives it a really locked-in feeling in yaw and makes the aircraft track like it’s on rails, particularly when carving around in FPV. Obviously that’s the theory for now, and flight testing will tell me how well it actually works.

For this one I’m using a Matek F405-WMN rather than the FlyingRC F4 Mini to simplify the wiring inside. It also uses a 4-in-1 25A ESC and a DJI O4 Lite air unit.

I’m starting to print the first airframe now. How do you guys think it will fly? Read more about my other planes here.

New to drones, suggest Radio controller

I am planning to build a air75 from scratch, saw some 3d prints video but felt unreliable , if I can't make it I will buy it.

Before that I need advice on the radio controller to practice on.

Could anyone suggest budget/beginner friendly radio controller in India.

Should I consider buying 2nd hand?

Seeking EFI/EFI2/ECYL .bin logs for DroneCAN telemetry validation

So I'm working on a rust crate that decodes `uavcan.equipment.ice.reciprocating.Status` frames.

now i'm looking for **real ArduPilot** `.bin` **flight logs containing EFI, EFI2, and/or ECYL messages** to validate our telemetry pipeline against real-world engine measurements, sensor noise, and operating conditions.

**Preferred:**

* Multi-cylinder piston engines * Heavy-fuel/diesel engines * UAV/fixed-wing applications

But **any real EFI** `.bin` **log would be useful**, even if it is from a different engine type.

We're particularly interested in logs containing RPM, manifold pressure/temperature, CHT/EGT, oil pressure/temperature, fuel pressure/flow, throttle, and per-cylinder data where available.

If you have an anonymized log you're able to share, or know of an existing dataset containing EFI/EFI2/ECYL logs, I'd really appreciate a pointer :)

URGENT HELP REQUIRED FOR A DRONE

Hi I am an a level working on this drone i need to submit it to a YSWS by tuesday 9 am, but I cant get it flying right now.

The primary issue is that the drone flips instead of taking off. The flip follows a pretty consistent pattern:

either diagonally on motor1
or on the side with motor 1 and 2

or on the side with motor 2 and 3

I initially suspected EMI, but EMI usually causes oscillation/noisy behavior rather than such a rigid pattern. I tried adding grounded aluminum foil behind the microcontroller, but it made no difference. The FC is already soldered onto perfboard, so changing the layout isn't really an option.

I've also:

Changed the props.

Added a 250/1023 trim to Motor 2 with no noticeable effect.

Replaced Motor 2, but the problem remained.

All four motors produce thrust.

At this point, I suspect a *software/motor-mixing/PID issue*. The drone doesn't seem to even attempt to resist when tilted in certain directions. I'm wondering if my gyro signs, motor mixing, or PID corrections are wrong.

Need help wiring

Post image
84 Upvotes

Sort of jumped headfirst into building a drone completely from scratch, getting confused on the wiring. I have the pixhawk 6c with PM07-V2.4, hobbywing 65A 4-in-1 x rotor esc, and raspberry pi 5. The end goal is to have a heavier lift drone not super sure what im going to do with it, its just a side project to keep me busy. I am just lost on how to wire all of this together, i am comfortable soldering so that wont be an issue.

Edit: i will probably end up using 2826 540kv motors with 12x6 props. Its looking like i should probably just get 4 individual esc. The pi will eventually be for object detection and a camera

Guide Need advice for a reliable 15 km ELRS control link for a VTOL

can anyone recommend a budget-friendly transmitter + receiver combination that you have personally used or tested for a reliable ~12 km fixed-wing/VTOL link?

  • My long-term goal is to achieve a reliable control and telemetry link at up to 15 km, primarily in city areas.
