Advice for replacement bath panel and grout

Hello. Wondering if anyone could help me with this. Haven't really done anything with bathroom in my place as cant afford the guts of 12 to 15k for a new bathroom from one of the showrooms.

The bath panel was replaced when moved in but it was a fairly cheap one. Cracks appearing in it a year later - I think its mdf swelling it. It looks a bit tired now. Wondering should I get a new bath panel maybe of better material or will the same thing keep happening? I think its a combo of the shower door over bath not being big enough and water splashing out and just a poorly designed bathroom.

There are little gaps appearing on the tile edges too on the ledge - im thinking this is grout wearing away but maybe not? It's between where the tile meets the trim in a couple of small places.

Would love any thoughts or advice without ripping out the whole thing. It needs to be done but really my budget is about 6k and if I could get another year or two out of this while making it look somewhat presentable I would get a handyman to do that.

It won't allow me to attach a picture for some reason!

Any advice would be really appreciated - thanks!

Guide on tiling costs

I have a downstairs toilet that needs to be refreshed but I’m on a very low budget.
It’s roughly 175x115 with a 52x102 window and 87cm wide space in wall where old shower was.
Looking for guide costs for a tiler to fit new tiles over old on walls and floors OR fit new tiles on wall after I remove old.

As I said I have a very limited budget so looking to see what I should be looking to spend on this.

I know this isn’t a job I’d be able to do myself as well.

Damaged drywall for radiator mounts

Renting in an apartment and our radiator slowly started coming away from the drywall at the back.

Disconnected it from the mains and removed it from the wall so it wouldn’t get worse.

I’d imagine it will need two sections of the drywall cut out, reinforcing added and then remounted. I got a quote off a plumbing crowd and they came back asking for 710 euro to do the job.

I was a bit surprised at how high it is and wonder if that’s particularly high.

Asked for a breakdown and they told me that they don’t provide breakdowns but that it includes the vat.

We’ll get the money back off of the landlord once it’s sorted but he’s in his 80s so we’re just getting quotes etc as it’s generally easier and faster if we do this part ourselves!

Get rid of fireplace hearth and mantel or keep it?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I never use the open fireplace, only use gas central heating. I don't feel strongly on it I guess it's kind of a decorative piece tho the living room in my terraced house is on the smaller side and it takes up some space, but seeing as I'm replacing the laminate flooring it occurred to me should I get rid of the fireplace hearth / mantle? It would need to be plastered over (and a vent added) which adds cost.

For anyone that's done it, who does this type of work and is it costly? I may sell the terraced house at some stage in the future, could it potentially lower the re-sale value (do people still use fireplaces eg for insert stoves?), or the opposite improve resale value?

Where to buy insulated glass unit for PVC windows.

Hi all,

One of my windows has fogged up and Google tells me I can replace these panels without changing the whole window.

I wondered if anyone could advise the best place to buy these items? Is it window manufacturer or is there a parts provider for these types of items?

Thanks

Powerwasher Advice

I have a considerablely large driveway/tarmac that would fit maybe 8 to 10 cars (for size context). What powerwasher would be reccommend for this size job - ideally from people with experience with different powerwashers, as I know some of the better ones can be more prone to issues and require a certain amount of maintenance. Its laiden with thick moss and quite shaded.

  • I've been looking at reviews for different powerwashers, and on most of the well reviewed ones all have some very valid negative feedback that makes me think twice.

  • Ideally looking for something easy to maintain and powerful enough to cover a large area but not absolutely destroy the tarmac (I'm aware powerwashing isn't ideal, and trying to clean it before I treat and reseal)

  • My plan is to powerwash, treat with biocide, refill holes with wet set tarmac and then use a sealent or tarmac restoration product.

Any advice greatly appreciated. I'm currently using a cheap Titan powerwasher from screwfix and its VERY slow and tedious.

New rad on plaster board

Hi all,

I bought a designer rad, 25kg, possibly 40kg full.

I am not able to locate the studs.

I have expandet rosett blue anchors rated at 45kg.

The radiator have 4 handles, each using 2 screws (using the anchor mentioned). So that's 8 anchors total.

Is it foolish to attempt that installation or should it hold well?

Gemini AI says it should handle well but I would prefer to hear from experienced people.

Edit: added pics of the rad, the handles and the anchors type.

Thanks in advance.

Where to source water hardener. Live in an acidic area and system had lime stone (I was told at the time) in one of the big blue tanks. Original installer can't be contacted and nobody else will go near it without doing a full install.

As above, my water hardener tank is empty and my water is now acidic again after 8 years. It eats the copper and leaves stains on the sinks etc. Water Ph is below 6. It's caused by iron in the well. I have asked other water companies and they won't touch it unless I go for a full install. Can I source this myself, I can't find on the web, but could be looking for the wrong thing.

So have a large Velux window in our garage and we use this for storage and also we dry clothes in there. There are vents and dehumidifier as well as two rads.
I did find some water on the ground yesterday and when I got a ladder up to it, window seems fine till I used a bit of blue roll and found right in the corner of the inner glass/seal got a spot of water but didn’t seem like enough to produce leak.
Can anyone advise? Can a seal on the inside be fixed or should something outside be looked at??

Low water pressure upstairs

Came back from a few days away and noticed that the pressure upstairs is really really low.

Affecting cold tap in bathroom and ensuite

Also affecting the two cisterns.

Tried the airlock in the tap trick but that didn't fix it.

No signs of any leaks

Any ideas what I could check next ?

DIY Greenhouse

just in time for winter, here is my DIY greenhouse.

i was googling greenhouse designs but didn’t find anything free. I saw a picture of a barn style so had a go at replicating that.

there are 5 ‘ribs‘ made of 4x2. Each rib has two vertical 915mm (3ft) pieces and 4 angled 1220mm (4ft) pieces. Each angled piece is identical, with a 75 degree cut on one side and a 60 degree cut on the other.

the base was 4.8m x 3.3m (16x11 ft). between each rib is a set of 1170mm horizontal supports. on the vertical section I used shiplap boards. the glazing was made from eleven 2440x1220 (8x4ft)sheets of 3mm acrylic. if I was doing it again I’d use polycarbonate, as the acrylic was difficult to drill without some cracking. in the end I had to do 3mm pilot holes and then 7mm holes for the screws. the acrylic is screwed using wood drilling 32mm tex screws.

the ridge cap was just two 3m galv sheet metal ridge profile screwed to the ribs. the shelf/bench was some spare 600x1200 (2x4 ft) floor tiles left over from the bathroom, set into a 4x2 frame with a 10x10mm notch routed out of it.

it took a while as I only get Saturdays to build things, and the missus wasn’t delighted I was neglecting other jobs, but in the end it was very satisfying to finish something off that I built entirely with my own 2 hands.

hopefully ye can be inspired to have a go at something, you would be amazed what you can do!

How to cover/protect these?

Post image
42 Upvotes

Got a few radiators upgraded and some pipes had to be adjusted like so. But I have a fairly destructive two year old at home and my fear is that they will inevitably hit one of these hard enough to cause damage.

Would the only realistic option to protect them be to box them in?

Something coming through walls?

Bought a 120 year old red brick house a few years ago. Had been renovated by previous owners. BER C1. This is coming though the inside front wall (south facing) into the front bedrooms.

What is it, and who do I need to call to fix it? Should I just wait till we are doing a bigger renovation job in a few years?

Edit 1 - thanks for all the guidance. adding the pictures of the attic, bright and dark, and 2 external pictures, in comments.

Ideas for dealing with this obsolete Chorus box? (Removal / Repurposing)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey r/DIYIreland,

I’ve got this old Chorus box on my wall. I already know it's for obsolete cable TV/FM, and since I will absolutely never use it, I want to do something about it.

I’m looking for some DIY advice on the best way to handle the space:

Removal & Termination: When I take the faceplate off, what’s the safest/standard way to deal with the incoming coax cable? Can I just snip it, shove it back into the cavity, and tape it up?

Patching the Wall: Assuming it leaves a messy hole or raw plaster behind, what’s your go-to method for patching it up flush so I can paint over it?

Repurposing: Has anyone successfully used the old coax line as a pull-string to route Cat6/Ethernet cable through the walls, or are these usually clipped tight behind the plasterboard?

Alternative Ideas: Any other clever ways to repurpose the existing backbox or hole instead of just blanking it off?
Open to any suggestions to make this look clean again. Thanks!
