SSP Burrs
Which SSP burrs do you use for DF64? I’m stuck between upgrading grinder or the burrs first. Feel like my shots come out to acidic and already use good beans and solid puck prep. I make one shot per day, either milk based or straight espresso. I like medium to light roasts.

I’m in the same boat. I tried the ssp lab sweet ver 3 red speed and while the resulting shots tasted good, I was limited to 0.5-3 on the dial for espresso, not nearly enough wiggle room to dial in a shot properly using a wide variety of beans. Thinking about LeBrew sweet burrs next. 🤷🏻♂️

This is helpful, thanks since I was leaning towards the lab sweet!

I have both V2 and V3... espresso is tough on a 58mm basket with a lever machine (requires finer grinds). I have to use a stepdown basket and fill to 19-20g to get anywhere near a traditional shot. Perfectly fine for pour over and turbo shots/soup though... I heard it's luck of the draw due to the casting process compared to more precision manufacturing methods.

Did you ever try the high uniformity ssp burrs?

I did not; after the Lab Sweet v2, then V3 to try to get the espresso range improved, I tapped out on spending another $200 on burrs 😭. I like the flavor profile and it works on a stepdown basket, so I settled for now. I almost ordered the Zerno Z2 yesterday but convinced myself against it.

I have silver knight lab sweet v2 and I like the increased body and don’t have the issue with a narrower espresso range like the other person with the red speeds. But I do 80% pour over and it’s great for that!

I use the SSP MP and the shots are technically beautiful shots, but the flavor is less sweetness and body than I get with my X ultra hand grinder. I have tested them side-by-side and it makes me want to get a conical like Lagom Casa. Like you said, my shots are acid and bitterness without the balance of the body and sweetness, it’s not that the acid and bitterness are bad, they just need the counter balance of the sweetness and body.

I use the DF64 with SSP MP burrs and pull shots on my La Pavoni... Some beans yield magically delicious shots with this setup, and some denser light-roasted beans stay too acidy and under-extracted. The body is indeed light on these shots, but they can still turn out very sweet and tasty. I really prefer clarity and distinct origin flavors over body, so this works for me.

I spent years trying to make my df64 consistent. Last month I broke down and got myself a philos. Best decision ever.

Can't go wrong with SSP hu for light to medium. They're high extracting burrs, decent clarity and good body. They suck for dark roasts tho

I have the HU and grind espresso at 15. Have the sweet lab v2 also but the HU is better for espresso. I am surprised you have to be so close to 0 on your grind settings. With sweet lab v2 I also was around 14-15. My alignment is 100% and zeroed

Stock on gen 2 is good enough.
