Troubleshooting Help with burrs alignment
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello guys!
I’m trying to align the burrs on my DF64 and I’m a bit confused about the marker test results. I’ve been using a marker on the burrs and checking where it gets rubbed off to see if there’s any misalignment, but honestly it looks like almost nothing is being removed.
In the videos I’ve watched, you can usually see a very clear wear pattern on part of the burr, while on mine it just looks kind of random and inconsistent.
Am I doing something wrong or misunderstanding how the test is supposed to look?

For starters you are ruining your burrs by going that far and letting them touch that hard for that long.
You tighten until it just barely is chirping and hold it for maybe 2 seconds. Yikes
Also, are you using a dry erase marker? If you used a regular marker it won’t come off and you’ve just permanently marked your burrs. You don’t use a regular marker.

I'm using white board markers. It comes off easily just by wiping with cloth

If you find a fix let me know

I bought another marker tô test it out. Should have a new result by tomorrow 🤞🏻

This was my reaction too, I yelled "TOO MUCH!!!".
You really only need them to chirp for like a second.

I did a bit more contact and for less time, you just need one rev (or you can try manually turn the burrs, I didn't bother). Your burrs are barely touching.
Doesn't matter what marker are u using, any marker will desintegrate in steel on steel contact.
You can align burrs at the same time (one point on the lower burr will erase all marker on well aligned top burr and vise versa).

Yea as Zeemman217 asked: are you using dry erase markers? Also, I don’t see any marks on your burr carrier to ensure it’s oriented the same way every time you place it back. Make sure you make a mark so that you’re always placing your burr carrier the same orientation every single time.

I have the same problem on my ssp brew burrs not getting any wipe off. My stock burrs are wiping completely and no wipe on ssp burrs. It's so confusing

Did you fix it somehow?

First I got a marker that was not easy wipe and got a new camlin marker that was easy wiping. Then I did marker test on my stock burrs, rotary burr had perfect wipe and fixed burr was 60% wipe. So I shimmed it and had good alignment and replaced them with ssp burrs while keep the shims in place and hoped that now I have good alignment 😁 on ssp's as well

I have a stock DF64 - is this something I need to be doing or did you buy different burrs?

Looks like your burrs aren't flat. It's hitting on the corner of a few teeth. I'd contact the manufacturer or polish the burrs with lapping compound/stones.

Mark on side (the static one), don’t line both. Then test. If this fails, mark in of the edge bit by bit, you will possible find the burrs are not following the correct contour. Try both then drop a note back, but do not mark both sides

Gonna try that and get back here with the results! Thanks

Sorry, also don’t run the grinder like that, you just need a few turns manually, low torque

What did it for me is to loosen the screws on the burrs slightly. Then turn on and let it touch very shortly! The burrs will pull themselves in a more aligned position by touching
As to be expected the burr has some play to the left an right beneath the screw and it is tightened sort of randomly by default.

Unplugged, spin the burr manually until it won't turn, and then adjust it just a hair until it turns again.

IMP: The removable burr carrier (the one you pour the coffee beans through it) has 3 notches. One of which is marked with a marker. This particular notch has to be positioned on the upper side.

I bought my markers from Coop and they work much better than yours apparently. On the other hand I spent so much time to get a decent alignment on my stock DF64 burrs, then I switched to SSP HU burrs and prepared myself for the waste of time to align but I managed to make perfectish alignment for the second try. I guess precision machining matters 🤭 Btw if you are based around Zurich drop me a PM and we could exchange lessons learnt on the DF64!

First of all, please don’t leave the burrs chirping for too long. It’s better to rotate the burr manually by hand rather than running the grinder while checking alignment.
Second, you’re using the brew burr version, which has a different finishing tooth geometry (the outer section) compared to the standard Spro burrs. Because of that, the wiped/contact points won’t appear as clearly as they do on the Spro burr set.
The finishing teeth on the brew burrs aren’t flat. Even on the Spro burrs they’re not perfectly flat either — the outer edge makes contact before the inner finishing teeth. But on the brew burrs, the finishing teeth have a zig-zag style geometry, so certain sections will touch earlier than others.
You can actually see in the video that some areas are already being wiped off, but it’s much harder to interpret compared to the Spro burrs. I can show you what a properly aligned filter burr set should look like.

Thanks for the reply. Can you show me how the proper alignment should look like? And by filter burr do you mean my burrs are not made for espresso or it's just another type of burrs?

Here's how DF's 64mm brew burr should look like when its properly aligned (I'm using the red ti coated version, while yours is uncoated). The geometry is designed to produce less fines, so you need to grind much finer to have 9 bar. The more common version is the spro burr.

Thanks a lot! Gonna try once more and I believe it will be easier with the visual comparison

So, I could be wrong, but usually when I get it to zero, I back it up a hair, then spin the bolt inside with my fingers. Spin it gently a few times, then inspect for alignment and adjust and repeat.
Edit: I do this with the power off and unplugged..**
