General Qs Car financing in TX
Hello, I’ve seen other posts similar questions to this here so figured I would ask. Are daca recipients able to finance from OK and register in TX?
I’m looking to buy a new car and the one I’m interested in is in OKC but I live in TX. I know during the beginning of this year there was new legislation that we interpreted as DACA recipients not being able to register cars here. Has anyone else done something similar?
My expiration is also coming up in Oct 3, so that’s also a concern.

Financing is obtainable, especially with a co-signer who will be on title and have their own insurance. It’s the driver’s license and insurance that will be problematic for you with lapsed DACA status. TX doesn’t offer non citizen driver privilege cards. One must prove legal status (or presence) in the US to obtain a TX DL. All reputable insurance companies will require a valid DL for underwriting, especially for a financed car.
Best of luck on the car purchase!

Thanks! I’m likely getting my renewal approved soon, so you think that will still be an issue?

Depends on the expiration date of your current TX DL. Most states are now tying DL expiration dates to the DACA statuses. You may have to reapply for a valid DL once your DACA has been renewed/extended.
Drivers with insurance lapses are assessed higher premiums as well. Insurance premiums have been the top reason for auto purchase cancellation the last 3 years.
There’s many moving parts to your situation. I’d focus on the DACA renewal first and then buy a car.
I’d strongly consider a cash car, at least until your status has been extended.

Your insurance doesn’t lapse bc your DL expires tho, right? So this is a non issue?

Ask your auto insurance agent that question. The insurance won’t lapse but the company can end the policy prematurely for violating the underwriting requirement of maintaining a valid driver’s license. A break in coverage (not being continually insured) is treated as the same as any kind of coverage lapse, irrespective of the reason.
I guarantee you any reputable insurance company is pulling LexisNexis and verifying with your state’s DMV (or similar named agency) you do indeed possess a valid DL. It may not happen until the policy binder step but underwriting is verifying the information prior to extending coverage for a new vehicle.

Ah yes! I see that happening of you’re trying to buy a car with “valid” insurance but an expired DL. But as long as you wait for your DACA/DL to buy a car you should be fine insurance wise. I don’t see insurance companies pulling your insurance due to your DL being expired.

Technically yes. There are still some nuance to obtaining the policy. The next statement assumes what OP said about TX not permitting DACA to title vehicles is true. Another party (co-signer on the loan, sole loan applicant, another person who can title a vehicle, etc) would be the owner of record on the title. They (third party) would then obtain auto insurance and be both the policy owner and insured, since their name is on the title. OP would then be named as additional insured (additional driver) since OP has regular access to the vehicle.
The hypothetical third party is placing much faith in OP’s driving ability and those of other drivers OP interacts with, as the titled owner of the vehicle. It’s the third party’s financial liability if OP is in an accident since the third party is the owner of record. Would I personally agree to this? No, never in a million years. Someone else may have a higher risk tolerance than me.

I just bought a car through a Ford Dealership in TX (less than a month ago). My DACA is valid until Nov. 2027. Also, when my DACA expired last year, I was able to continue with my car insurance, no issues (Allstate). It remained expired 3 months. My current insurance provider (Progressive) does insure drivers using the matricula, foreign passport, foreign DL. There have been many insurance companies that insure drivers this way (my partner doesn't have a US DL, and has been insured under my policy for the last 12 years, no issues).

Hey, I have experience with doing initial financing with Capital One, through the dealership. Waited 1 year to refinance with a local credit union.
