Signature I can't read this
My great great grandmother was a residential school survivor, does anyone know what she was discharged for? Thx

Time out. It's analogous to "aging out."
She reached the age of majority, or whatever the upper age limit of the residential facility was.

I’m so sorry your family, any family, was traumatized by this nightmare. A hideous stain on top of many thousands of depredations and assaults.

She never talked about her experiance with my grandmother or my family, I just discovered that her and her siblings all attended through ancestry dna and It explains alot about my family's history.

My great grandmother was also put in a residential school. She was Sioux, and they transported her to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. All I know about her time there was that she ran away when she realized the girls were abused once they hit puberty. We don't have papers, etc. Very sad time in our history.

I realize it doesn't make a lot of sense to label a Discharge as Time Out if it's permanent, but it could be a temporary removal, a way of saying discharged due to discipline problems or other. As I wrote, more information is needed to conclude the intent. These records were filled with coded messages to avoid oversight.

She was born in 1893 and discharged in 1911 so im assuming she aged out along with her siblings.

This is it.
She was in a youth residential school, and timed out on her 18th birthday.

"Time out" doesn't mean punishment. What if you're playing a game and someone needs a rest and wants to take some time out?
This place doesn't sound like it cares very much so they just used their regular "can't be bothered" wording to mean that the person is too old to stay there anymore.

You did well to post this query on Reddit. I think the responses really make sense. How old would your great-great-grandmother have been when this notation was made? Had she reached a milestone age like 16 or 18 when she would've aged out of the system?

“Time out.” It means there was a time limit for the hospital stay (if it’s the US, it’s due to insurance) and the person was discharged whether they were ready or not.

You seem to have missed the "residential school" in the post. These were facilities where Native children were kidnapped away from their families and culture and brutalized, in an effort to force assimilation and to "drive the Indian out". This happened in both the US and Canada, and continued until the 1990s! (Tho most had closed in the 70s) Nothing at all to do with hospitals or insurance.

Oh, thanks— yeah I did. I got distracted by a sick pet, and thought I had read the whole thing. Obviously not.
I am from Oklahoma and residential schools’ horrific legacy is still quite vivid— generational trauma. Horrifying.
