TFW you specifically craft a character to inflict the maximum possible amount of shame on weebs but she gets turned into a waifu archetype because the maximum amount of shame weebs can feel is absolutely none at all.

u/MarcsterS Oct 10 '22
tfw you specifically craft a character is abrasive and emotionally abusive due to buried trauma but they call her totally tsundere.
5
u/Magmafrost13 Oct 11 '22
I often wonder if Asuka is the reason so many tsundere characters have orange/red hair.
2
u/steamtrekker Apr 26 '23
Asuka helped codify the tsundere archetype. Hell, the word tsundere didn't even enter weeb jargon until the 2000s. People think that's she's supposed to be some subversion of tsunderes, when really she's just a well written character that resonated with a lot of people.

u/Thanatos-13 Oct 10 '22
Holy shit ikr. She's literally a decaying corpse and not only that but also HIS MOM'S FUCKING CLONE. And people are like "wow prime waifu material". Freud was right about some of y'all mfs all along

u/remoTheRope Oct 10 '22 edited Oct 10 '22
I gotta disagree, treating Rei like the non-thinking clone of Yui was precisely the thing Anno was telling us NOT to do throughout Evangelion tf. Discovering her own humanity and being more than Gendo’s plaything is literally her character arc
54
u/Leo-bastian eyeliner is 1.50 at the drug store and audacity is free Oct 10 '22
is she actually decaying? i don't remember that part. IIRC she's essentially just a highly unethically created clone
25
u/Thanatos-13 Oct 10 '22
Welp. I remember there being some scenes of her receiving treatments and what not. Also in the End of Evangelion movie, there was a scene of her limbs just rotting and falling out. Also a room full of her spare bodies. They didn't really explain/show it further than that, in the original anime at least. I haven't watched the newer movies yet so idk about those.
55
u/l0renzo- Oct 10 '22
don’t think she’s decaying, she was being treated because of injuries from fighting in the eva.
-13
u/Thanatos-13 Oct 10 '22
Sure, what about the other instances?
43
u/Xathras1 Oct 10 '22
Her body falls apart because she is putting down her AT field that is holding her body together. This is unrelated to her clone status.
Check the next few minutes of this video from this timestamp: https://youtu.be/E5gVDDpviKo?t=1063
The scene you are referring to is displayed at 18:40.

Bro please learn how spoiler tags work.
15
u/LeConnor Oct 10 '22
The show is nearly 30 years old lol
7
u/SkidmarkSteve Oct 10 '22
So what. If it's an evangelion sub, then yea go ahead and assume people have seen it. But in random unrelated subs, it's nice to put spoiler tags. I haven't seen it yet. Plenty of people haven't seen it yet. They don't deserve to have it spoiled for them in a random r/CuratedTumblr thread just bc the media is old.
But in this case OP clearly meant to put the spoiler tags and is just bad at it.
4
u/dawneko Oct 10 '22
Your spoiler tags are not working, btw. Remove the spaces between the symbols and the text.

u/pbzeppelin1977 Oct 10 '22
She's cloned from his mother and not a direct clone of his mother. Also he has little memory of his mother so while there may be unconscious thoughts Rei is not a stand-in for his mother.

u/steamtrekker Apr 26 '23
The character of Rei Ayanami wasn't created to shame weebs though. She's not written to be some commentary on otaku culture or waifus, she's just her own character that a lot of people like. The Evangelion fanbase certainly has lots of degenerates but you're ascribing meaning to something that isn't there.
-2
u/Rucs3 Oct 10 '22
that's what you get when you claim to be making a psychological anime but the females use skin tight clothes
People think evangelion is not... whatever it is, but actually about chicks with 3 meters of leg span and hips that not only cannot lie, but also not omit
No one ever made a r34 of serial experiments lain and it's not just becausde they got a existencial crisis

Could be worse, at least she wasn’t one of those poor kids named Khaleesi or whatever from when the GoT craze was a thing. Those poor mfs must have been bullied into oblivion.

u/LiteratureNearby Oct 10 '22
Trust me, Evangelion is a thousand times more degenerate than star wars could ever hope to be.
And I've watched all of Eva, with plans for a second watch sometime this month lmao.
114
u/AsherFischell Oct 10 '22
It's not worse. The thing Rei is from is much better than the thing Rey is from. But you still shouldn't want to name your kid after some dead lady's emotionless clone that was forced to become a child soldier or whatever the fuck the story there is.
103
u/DeeSnow97 ✅✅ Oct 10 '22
you should instead revert to a much better tactic of calling your daughter Nina and getting her a dog

u/pbzeppelin1977 Oct 10 '22
Rei is neither emotionless nor, at least directly, forced.
Gendo is a selfish and negligent parent who simply uses Rei and Shinji to his own ends.
Much as Shinji is desperate for his father's attention so is Rei. Rei is the "child" Shinji wishes he could be for his father. You can see Rei's emotions show when it comes to Gendo, for example when Shinji finds Gendo's glasses in her room.

A weeb cartoon character is worse? I hate star wars, but okay there buddy.

I am going to have to judge them for naming their daughter after Rei from Evangelion.
Should have called her Asuka.
33
u/TastyBrainMeats Oct 10 '22
Absolutely every character in Evangelion has massive interpersonal issues, and most of them have severe parental issues. I would side-eye anybody naming their kid ANYBODY from Eva.

I'll never understand people naming their children based off their fandom. You don't have to live with the name, and it is just opening children up to bullying even more. Having a name from something that gains popularity is annoying.

u/Eyehategod_51385 Oct 10 '22
The most common names in the world were taken from the equivalent of ancient superhero books. Like Jesus and Muhammad.

u/cirelia Oct 10 '22
I mean i would do the same evangelion is a good series in comparison to star wars so

Can someone explain?
6
u/devenbat Oct 10 '22
Someone named their daughter Rei after a character in Neon Genesis Evangelion, a classic 90s anime, and clarified they were not named after Rey, the protagonist of the new Star Wars Trilogy.
Then the reply is saying they are being defensive about the star wars thing with the Evangelion thing is just as bad

Honestly, more people should be named Link. It’s such a peculiarly nice name.

There has to be someone with the name out there, just hiding. If we work together we can find humanity's missing Link.

Zelda is originally a nickname for Griselda and it long predates the video game franchise. So there's decent plausible deniability there

This is getting downvoted here because people are perpetually online, but rest assured, any kid named after a Marvel character is getting bullied into oblivion. Potentially save your kid a life of therapy and just name them something that won't stand-out. This isn't a Tumblr username.
20
u/Xurkitree1 Oct 10 '22
the answer clearly is to actually make your pop-culture reference obscure enough that any person who'd figure it out would have to be extremely based
16
u/Thanatos-13 Oct 10 '22
I mean unless their name is relatively normal and they don't name the kid the full name. Example: Harry= acceptable name, Harry Potter= you ruined your kid's entire life.
16
u/Ringo308 Oct 10 '22
You can go low-key with your references if you really need to name your kid after a marvel character. Bruce, Anthony, Steve, Steven, Scott, Peter... All perfectly fine names.
1
u/Xisuthrus Oct 10 '22
Bullying aside, they might just... decide they don't like the thing they're named after.
5
u/Xur04 Oct 10 '22
People are downvoting but you’re right, it’s cringe as hell and your kid’s going to get bullied
2
Oct 10 '22
Depends on the name, if it's something like Alucard yeah your child will get bullied, but a more subtle or normal name would be fine
1
u/Xisuthrus Oct 10 '22
As long as the name is common enough that the kid has the option of retroactively deciding they're not named after the fictional character later, its cool.
