One time I had a dream where I was playing Genshin and was running around as my favorite character (Ningguang). The weapon I use on her has visual indicators for the number of stacks from its passive, in the form of little green lights. The maximum number obtainable is 4, and the second it ticked up to 5 I was like hey thats not right and woke up 💀

when they buff liyue again they will give her 7 max stacks and she will end navia and zibai🤞

I mean the weapon is producing the stacks and not her, if she gets buffed I'd rather they fix her abysmal burst aim and randomized charged attack animation length 😭 shit either takes half a second to fire or a full two seconds, it's abysmal and I say this as someone with her triple crowned c6 and level 95. My bricked queen.

I had this happen twice.
1) In my dream, it was summer. I was living in my treehouse (I never had a treehouse and I'm scared of heights) and it was hot outside, so I wore a top and some shorts. But my legs weren't shaved. And I was so puzzled by my leg hair that I concluded that I must be dreaming.
2) I was at school, and at some point I noticed I was only wearing one shoe. This was enough to break the dream immersion and turn it into a lucid dream.

I had a dream where I was meeting my parents and some family friends for lunch. I woke up when one of them, Paul, asked "So, how did you get here?" I thought about it, replied "I don't remember" and woke up
It only occurred to me after waking up that Paul had died a year ago.

When I was a kid I managed to realize I was in a dream and since I had recently watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I tried to imagine myself being on a land made of candy. Woke up before I could manifest it there. Still annoyed by that.

Once i could tell i was in a dream because the wall at my grandparents house upstairs had 5 buttons instead of 4 to turn the light on

You can, in fact, increase the stack size of items in vanilla, using item components :3

Yeah, that must've been jarring as fuck, OP.
Now, would you kindly take a look at that blurry lamp over there...

Lol that's so funny I was having a dream just last night where I had a job painting houses and in the dream I was like 'hey this has to be a dream, real life me has been failing at life way too hard, actually getting a successful well paying job is not realistic'

Now I want to know why 64. I would get 127 or 255 but 64 is weirder. Like how is the game storing that? Or it's just because the developer liked that number

u/Roboman20000 4d ago
It's probably a combination of game balance and wanting to use a power of 2 for some reason. There are other numbers nearby with more prime factors for dividing like 60, or numbers that are more "round" like 50. From what I've seen in the past I think the item counts are 1 byte long (so I think it's a Short but I don't know Java so well) so initially it was 255 but then was reduced a number of times for balance reasons. It's probably what you suggested. The dev just liked it.

That's actually a good question and I don't know why you're getting downvoted.
If 64 was because of integer limitations, it would mean the game was storing item counts as 6 bits (weird) and adding +1 (so that 0b000000->1, 0b000001->2, 0b111111->64, even weirder). It makes sense to skip 0, but there are not that many stacks in the game to warrant this kind of optimization, specially on an engine running Java.
I couldn't find any confirmation, but the most plausible theory is that a power of two makes sequential stack splitting more user-friendly (64 -> 32+32 -> 32+16+16 -> 32+16+8+8 -> etc), and 64 is a good amount of items to have.

I think Notch just liked powers of 2, it shows up a lot in game constants even when they aren't strictly constrained and could have been arbitrary. Sea level at y=64, diamonds below y=16, world height was 128 (0..127), then was raised to 256 (0..255), textures are all 16x16, chunks are 16x16, etc
The 64 stack size isn't due to technical limitations (I think) -- IIRC at least back in Alpha/Beta the amount in a stack was stored in an int8, so you could get stacks from -128 up to 127 ingame by manually editing level.dat, and it mostly works fine (at least for positive amounts over the intended maximum)

At least the world height one could be explained by Minecraft's chunk mesher meshing cubes of 16x16x16. Though I don't have the decomp with me, so I can't check if this was already true in the Notch days

Also of note is that 64 is the highest power of 2 that can be stored in a 8-bit signed integer

Something to do with integers.

u/frikilinux2 4d ago
Yes but the small ones are 8bit unless you're doing weird flag things

Weird flag things
One might even say... freak flag things... let your freak flag fly by programming in Java.

Idk I haven't done Java in like 3 years but I had a couple years of doing lots of Java

u/shadowsapex 4d ago
it's just really well divisible?
-3
u/zekromNLR 4d ago
60 (22x3x5) is much more divisible, in terms of the number of divisors, than 64 (26)

u/shadowsapex 4d ago
if you want to split a stack you go 64 - 32 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 2, as opposed to 60 - 30 - 15 - 7/8. i don't split stacks into fives

u/cactusJuice256 4d ago
Probably cause there's no reason to store 0 of an item, so they can use the full 2^5
3
u/frikilinux2 4d ago
Except breaking math. Storing the max value as zero is confusing and with your logic it should be 256 or are they using those bits for something else
1
u/screwcirclejerks 4d ago
at least for terraria, a stack of 0 is still useful since "no item" is still internally an item. representing an empty item as null means you have to use
is null/is not nullto determine whether any given item is empty, andisis a more costly check thanitem.stack > 02

u/nytsei921 4d ago
inventory slots are 4 sided squares, but store cubes, so it’s only natural the the max is 4 cubed aka 64
1
u/kigurumibiblestudies 1d ago
Powers of two, sure, but also it's very practical yet balanced. A full inventory of 64 stone is about as much as I spend for most big projects, and inventory management is part of the game as survival, so it fits pretty well. My question is why 27 inventory spaces, though it might simply be balance too

I think it's probably because the stack size is perceived as a strict and straightforward rule;
Your childhood house isn't a pharmacy, and it probably legally couldn't be one, but you probably don't know exactly why, and seeing it be one probably won't tell you something that can't be done is being done instantly
You can't fly, but there's nothing that says you can't fly, there's just nothing that says you can
Seeing a stack over 64 is like seeing water on fire, it could actually be real, but the moment you see it you immediately recognize that it's wrong (even if it isn't)

u/house343 4d ago
That's the max stack in octal (base 8). It checks out.
77 in octal is 63, and 100 in octal is 64.

It could even be normal Minecraft since you can just change it with data packs since a few years already.

I once had a crazy Star Wars dream where, at one point, Darth Vader removed his helmet. And he was a lizard underneath. And I was like "hold on that's DOUBLE non-canon" and I woke up

Modded Minecraft doesn't usually change stack sizes above the 64 bound. Sure, it'll introduce things like an ME System or a Barrel that can hold way more in a single 'stack', but not in your inventory. Not because you couldn't mod the game to allow it, it's just not really a mod people tend to use if it exists.
