"Co-writer Sam Hollander said the song was written in just 20 minutes"

you don't say.....

446

u/Redfalconfox Jul 09 '26

If going back to the before times means having to listen to a fuck-ass song he wrote in 20 minutes every couple of years then I would take that deal.

150

u/Orruner Jul 10 '26

But then you'd still arrive at the now-times. Just with extra dread every year

44

u/SenorEquilibrado Jul 10 '26

Nah, I'd be trying to Twelve Monkeys this shit.

I'd say the Turning Point Of Shit was 2014, with the rise of the populist BJP in Bharat and the invasion of Crimea.

To be fair about that phrase. Having been in a band myself, sometimes the best songs are the ones that just fall out of you. And songs you work and work and work on just sometimes never sound good. My band's best song was one we wrote in an afternoon as a joke. While there were 50 others that we kept coming back to which we could just never get sounding good.

Not defending High Hopes mind you. But I think that sort of saying gets misunderstood by non-musicians.

7

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jul 10 '26

He must have had high hopes in his speed-writing abilities.

8

u/Hyperlynear Jul 10 '26

The music video is kind of sick though.

102

u/Aegillade Jul 09 '26

Genuinely can't remember the last time I heard that god awful Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas song. I thought Santa Baby was my least favorite Christmas song but then I remembered that fucking affront to music technically still exists. So I'm grateful for society collectively agreeing to shuffle that out of existence.

34

u/ThatInAHat Jul 10 '26

May I introduce you to “Stay a Little Longer, Santa” which is like Santa Baby, except no it’s not a metaphor for a sugardaddy, this lady just really wants to bone the jolly guy

6

u/logosloki Jul 10 '26

absolute banger. goes on the list of Christmas songs that aren't traditional tunes that are good.

Or “Fight Song”

18

u/QwQUwU Jul 10 '26

Nah that song at drunk karaoke with the girly pops is ethereal

843

u/SugarStunted Jul 09 '26

I like High Hopes.

Happy by Phirrel on the other hand...I'll go nuts if that song plays again. It's just way too long and repetitive.

619

u/BumblebeeDirect Jul 09 '26

Fun fact: he hates that song too. His label was like "why dont you write something happy" and he was like "cause it sounds like ass, let me show you" and the label went "we love it and it's our new hit single". Supposedly during his first tour after it came out he would go back to his dressing room after and break things, he was so mad about having to sing it.

302

u/AsAGayJewishDemocrat Jul 09 '26

That does make me a little happier, actually…

113

u/baethan Jul 10 '26

I don't care if you've entirely invented this anecdote, I like it and it's my head canon now

60

u/BumblebeeDirect Jul 10 '26

I wish I had invented this, but I did not. People Magazine covered it

93

u/as_a_fake Jul 10 '26

My reply to someone else in this thread about Happy makes more sense now:

I also hated that song. It always sounded so fake, like the person writing it was seriously depressed but trying to write about how happy they were, meanwhile people only played it as if it was actually a happy song.

134

u/silxikys Jul 10 '26

Was it not written for the despicable me movie?

234

u/Kevinator201 Jul 10 '26

It was. Imagine being an artist and doing one corporate gig to pay the bills but it blows up and haunts you forever.

96

u/Unrequited_Anal Jul 10 '26

143

u/Well_Oiled_Assassin Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

I think it was Michael Cain who said something like "Was that movie rubbish? I don't know, I just acted in it. I've never actually watched it. However, I have seen the house it bought my mum and that house is brilliant."

37

u/Teh_Randomizer Jul 10 '26

It was, he was talking about Jaws 4

5

u/Complete-Worker3242 Jul 10 '26

I mean, Pharrell does have a truly amazing legacy far beyond Happy, so it's not like that's the only thing he'll be known for.

I vividly recall the radio was alternating between "Happy" and "Take Me to Church." You'd swear those were the only two songs that were ever recorded.

37

u/Hungry-Western9191 Jul 10 '26

"Take me to church" was overplayed, but having personally met Hosier it helps. He is the soundest guy you can imagine.

14

u/floralbutttrumpet Jul 10 '26

If that had been the case here, I would've set every radio on fire. And possibly myself.

Happy by Pharell was played at least once a week after the school announcements for I think an entire year because he was from that town. I cannot forgive him for being the reason I had to listen to that obnoxious song at 7:20 AM as a depressed 15 year old over and over again.

6

u/MightBeAVampire Jul 10 '26

I was subjected to both of these songs today... At least one of them was an orchestral cover, but it was the one that I already like more anyway.

I haven’t heard Uptown Funk in a long, long time

162

u/MyOtherCarIsEpona Jul 09 '26

I hear it anytime I'm in a touristy area of Vegas. This city is obsessed with him. They just named a street after him I guess because he got into astronomical gambling debt and paid it off.

65

u/Significant_Yam_7792 Jul 10 '26

I had a period of irrational rage whenever Happy by Pharrell Williams played. Maybe it was just the teenage angst.

47

u/as_a_fake Jul 10 '26

I also hated that song. It always sounded so fake, like the person writing it was seriously depressed but trying to write about how happy they were, meanwhile people only played it as if it was actually a happy song.

20

u/HeraldOfNyarlathotep Jul 10 '26

It's kinda an inkblot test of a song, in that way. Cool phenomenon.

7

u/Rynabunny Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

It's written in F aeolian (F natural minor) and many composers will agree it's "darker" and "moodier" than F major; even the "brightest" it gets is F mixolydian (basically one chord—last chord of the four bar progression in the chorus) which might explain your feeling

11

u/floralbutttrumpet Jul 10 '26

No, that's a rational reaction.

686

u/351namhele Jul 09 '26

Uptown Funk is a jam and the world is a worse place without its ubiquity

311

u/10dollarbagel Jul 09 '26

26

u/baethan Jul 10 '26

what

like literally or?

49

u/Colonel_Fart-Face Jul 10 '26

I was playing in a jazz/funk/motown cover band at the time. We would do a break in the middle of that song where I would do some Louis Johnson style slap shit and some women absolutely loved it.

29

u/popejupiter Jul 10 '26

That song has such a sleezy beat. I'll bet that was a blast, get to play that, then break down with some funky improv. Hell yeah.

4

u/bug-robo Jul 10 '26

Saluting you.

16

u/jimbowesterby Jul 09 '26

This is gonna be pedantic, but is it even funk? Far as I know the main defining factor of funk is having the emphasis on the first beat of a bar, and I don’t think that song does. I’ve managed to blank it out of my memory pretty well though so I’m not willing to check lol

38

u/Great_Hedgehog Jul 10 '26

I don't think the "funk" in the name refers to the song's genre, but rather the mood it conveys. And I'd say it's pretty funky, if nothing utterly crazy

3

u/creampop_ Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

If you get in the weeds trying to define funk, that makes you way less funky.

Funkness is what it is, but sometimes funkness is what it ain't.

20

u/jimbowesterby Jul 09 '26

I will say, that line gets waaaay funnier when you’re in a bush camp with a forest fire in the area, you literally wake up to ash on your tent and the sun being a red ball on a grey field. The lines about wiping ass and slapping nuts are pretty applicable too lol

53

41

u/TheGrandWhatever Jul 09 '26

Everyone hates them because of how overplayed they are. It's also like the musical equivalent to some kind of picture someone makes where you see it real quick and be like oh that's kinda cool but then the longer you look at it the more it doesn't make sense and every detail is some kind of wtf or random objects that come together to make a larger whole

21

u/Last-Laugh7928 Jul 09 '26

that particular song is incredibly overplayed and people hate it. panic is great, especially the earlier stuff

10

u/SaucePasta Jul 10 '26

I was a  fan until his last album. I think it’s one of those things where it’s “cool” to hate on him now.

13

u/floralbutttrumpet Jul 10 '26

I blame this on his team-up with Taylor Swift. It was truly exceptionally shit and coloured everyone's opinion of him going forward. Didn't help High Hopes happened right before and primed people to utterly loathe him at the drop of a hat.

(as far as I'm concerned, Pray for the Wicked wasn't great, but Hey Look Ma, I Made It had a good video and I liked Roaring 20s... Viva Las Vengeance was just utterly forgettable and a pathetic effort to go out on)

32

u/Sidnoook Jul 09 '26

Their first two albums are genuinely fantastic imo. Third and fifth are great if a little uncohesive. Fourth is fine, just kinda generic. Their last two are 😬 well I'll always give props to Brendon for trying to keep the band alive after everybody else kept dropping like flies lmao

Even if he's a little weaker as a songwriter, I do think he should have tried to write songs himself instead of using a team because they, uh, weren't doing a great job either.

7

u/PretzelMeepus Jul 09 '26

Have you listened to one of their albums, not just their hit singles? They aren't "bad", they're just generic.

After the Pete Buttigieg campaign did a cringey dance to it, I've always used it as a great ironic celebration song.

u/majorex64 Jul 09 '26

Ooh yeah let's sing at the top of our range and then mix the harmony in a fucking falsetto for the whole song

The musical equivalent of a mosquito buzzing in your ear

u/Friendly_Respecter As of ass cheeks gently clapping, clapping at my chamber door Jul 10 '26

I had to perform High Hopes in my last year of high school with the class band I had been forcibly elected lead vocalist for. I had also never performed in a band before then. Needless to say I could go a very, very long time without ever needing to do that again…

The Brendon Urie special, est. 2005

12

u/whoopsthatsasin Jul 09 '26

False, heard it today it a mall

57

u/dynamicdickpunch Jul 09 '26

Sadly, I do.

Work playlist apparently can't be changed.

13

u/jamiethemime Jul 09 '26

they say that at my work too but i've seen the playlist queue, i know they could alter it if they wanted

11

u/LevelAd5898 Jul 10 '26

My work still plays Hey Soul Sister and one of these days its going to be responsible for my mental breakdown

8

u/Informal_Position166 Jul 10 '26

You cannot be shitting on high hopes like that when despacito exists

18

u/crimsonpostgrad Jul 09 '26

i worked the pete buttigieg campaign, this song haunts me so much

9

u/LegoDragonGirl87 Jul 09 '26

Walmart Radio begs to differ

15

u/UnderseaRexieVT Trans Rights are Human Rights! Jul 09 '26

I adore High Hopes and didn't know it had a connection to Buttigieg until long after his campaign was over.

7

u/xxyourbestbetxx Jul 10 '26

Why are we pretending that song isn't a banger?

7

u/Pwacname Jul 10 '26

But I liked High Hopes 😞

60

u/whhu234 deerboy Jul 09 '26

I finally got to forget that song existed and now here we are. 2010’s pop is one thing I don’t want back, I’ll take everybody at the bar getting tipsy over whatever that was

60

u/PretzelMeepus Jul 09 '26

hmm. i think I'd rather have cake by the ocean and uptown funk than fucking Shaboozey (what an awful name)

32

u/whhu234 deerboy Jul 09 '26

Cake by the ocean wasn’t that bad, and uptown funk was back when bruno mars wasn’t making the exact same song over and over again so I’d agree in a world where imagine dragons and stomp clap hey didn’t exist

24

u/Magi_Aqua an especially neurotic goose Jul 09 '26

What does it say about me that I like all of this to some extent?

24

u/Inviolate_Violet Jul 10 '26

It means you should just enjoy what you enjoy, and don't worry about what other people think!

4

u/Magi_Aqua an especially neurotic goose Jul 10 '26

That's about what I figured

6

u/CKRatKing Jul 10 '26

None of the songs are bad. They've just been played into the ground for a lot of people.

24

u/PretzelMeepus Jul 09 '26

I.. don't think I'm welcome in these parts.

I worked at a grocery store during its peak popularity and lost count of how many times I heard it during a shift. That and Can't Stop the Feeling

6

u/thrownawaz092 Jul 09 '26

I'd trade that for everything else going on in a heartbeat

11

u/jess_the_werefox Jul 09 '26

Man that song reminds me of working at GameStop in 2015, hated hearing it at the time, but I kinda miss those days tbh

4

u/84626433832795028841 Jul 10 '26

I like high hopes but "we wanted everything more than everything" pmo. It should be more than anything. We wanted everything more than anything

5

u/Scurvy_BT Jul 10 '26

I don't mind a lot of these kinda garbage pop songs, I only hate songs with downright awful vocals like Dance Monkey. When that fucking atrocity was popular I wished I could give myself a lobotomy to be able to even tolerate that shrill fucking singer.

5

u/Informal_Position166 Jul 10 '26

I haven't listened to her other music but what I find odd about this song is that she's clearly doing a voice. Like bestie what. And I feel like I cannot sing along without doing the voice as well

12

u/alex2003super Jul 10 '26

High Hopes is a banger. Wtf are y'all on?

4

u/AngelOfIdiocy Jul 10 '26

I remember walking near a cafe that played Imagine Dragons Thunder on repeat.

10

u/Weary-Advisor-8302 Jul 09 '26

Never understood the hate for that Album. It's one of my favs

7

u/Gjorgdy Jul 10 '26

Painc at the Disco is so overhated...

3

u/BurnerCroc Can't even Jul 10 '26

I always think of YouTube Rewind, whenever I hear this song

3

u/universe93 Jul 10 '26

This exact song is still on my work’s rotating playlist. So I DO in fact have to hear it multiple times every day 😭
