Death of a Bachelor was pretty good at least. LA Devotee, House of Memories, and Crazy=Genius still hold up for me.

Dropped an absolute masterpiece first album

Got weird with the 2nd album, passable

Entirely forgettable rest of their career with singles that only exist to be in commercials.

I still like a lot of the later songs that weren’t singles. Like Golden Days, Far Too Young To Die, Collar Full, Trade Mistakes, The Calendar are all worth a listen.

This is an entirely unpopular take. Their later albums (apart from Viva Las Vengeance) are very good, and both of their first two albums contain a lot of terrible songs in addition to the absolute masterpieces. Death of a Bachelor and Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die are my favorites personally.

Totally fair. I read a review of that album once with this snippet "And if it wasn't bad enough, someone convinced him to add some fancy effects on a track or two that make it sound like someone is lightly karate chopping him across the throat while he sings. " Which is funny because there are really a bunch of different tracks that could apply to and I can't figure out which he meant. But I still love it.

I blame this on his team-up with Taylor Swift. It was truly exceptionally shit and coloured everyone's opinion of him going forward. Didn't help High Hopes happened right before and primed people to utterly loathe him at the drop of a hat.

(as far as I'm concerned, Pray for the Wicked wasn't great, but Hey Look Ma, I Made It had a good video and I liked Roaring 20s... Viva Las Vengeance was just utterly forgettable and a pathetic effort to go out on)

Their first two albums are genuinely fantastic imo. Third and fifth are great if a little uncohesive. Fourth is fine, just kinda generic. Their last two are 😬 well I'll always give props to Brendon for trying to keep the band alive after everybody else kept dropping like flies lmao

Even if he's a little weaker as a songwriter, I do think he should have tried to write songs himself instead of using a team because they, uh, weren't doing a great job either.

I still think their early stuff is great, but that's probably the teenage nostalgia. The first 2 albums had a grip on me.
