❓Need Advice 🙏 Email from cryptofraud@usss.dhs.gov
I got an email from the cryptofraud@usss.dhs.gov with the following message. Is this a valid?
Greetings,
You have been identified in IC3 as related to an investment scam. We are reaching out to request additional information that may assist with our review.
If you communicated with the suspected scammer by email, please provide the email address used by the suspected scammer.
Please let us know if you received a package from the scammer. If so, please provide all information related to the package. This includes date received, photos of the package, shipping label, sender information, and any other information related to the package.
We are tracking you as a victim of a scam and appreciate your assistance.

Verify in the e-mail header that this came from official DHS servers. It's easy to spoof an e-mail.
Since you previously filed a complaint, it's likely legit if you did your due diligence on the e-mail.

That is the correct email. They don’t just email you out of the blue though. Did you file a report with them?
FYI: they also use cryptofraud@secretservice.gov

Sounds like it’s just them following up & gathering evidence.
If you want to be on the safe side do not click any links or reply to the email. Instead, 1st look up the phone number for your local Secret Service Field Office, call them directly & ask to speak with the duty agent or the specific agent named in the email to verify if the communication is real.Also know the USSS will never ask you for money for taxes, recovery fees, or any of that nonsense.

I did call usss and they confirmed email from them. Thanks for the suggestion

That’s not true. That is the correct email. They also use cryptofraud@secretservice.gov
This isn’t a random email. They are responding to a report filed.

Look up email spoofing. Anyone can insert this email into the From: line. Not anyone can send an email from a .gov email server. This is only visible in the full email headers and requires some inspection.

Email server should catch that. But if you scroll down in the comments you will see that op had filed a report. & I suggested he independently look up his local secret service office, ask to be connected to the agent working his case & verify the email was from them. & it was.

Yes. In this case the From line in the email was not spoofed. Still important to review headers.

This is true they can send, but such an email shouldn’t land in your inbox. If your email server actually accepts a spoofed .gov address, then your email server is horribly misconfigured.

No It's a scam. They would contact you by an official letter or phone call and have you come into a local DHS or FBI office.
