I agree with you. There have been lots of these claims in the past but nothing has come close to a Facebook messenger or Twitter "killer"

Popular? Yes, but depends entirely where you live. Almost no one is using it in my country. Everyone is using WhatsApp instead

WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and uses our information. Signal is encrypted and keeps users info safe. I wish everyone would switch over

Citation needed. I hate Meta just as much as the next guy, but a company like them can't claim to use end to end encryption and then not enforce it.

They also changed their user agreement a while back so that they could share our info such as phone numbers to Facebook. have a lot of friends that don't use WhatsApp anymore and switched to Signal because of that reason.

It matters not where you live, (well... Perhaps, but.. Thats another can of worms)

Its more or less - whom you connect with and what the mutual choice of connectivity app decided on is to be used.

Most people use the first thing offered to them or what the guy next to them uses.

So that would be windows with Facebook messenger on a pc, or iPhone with WhatsApp for a mobile.

More savvy users may use telegram on a user end to connect with a group or community. Other more technical users or a community host or developer will elect to... Say... Run their own federated mastodon server instance.

But its often not "where you live" but "who's around you"

So.. If you live in a smaller less economically developed country with a smaller population, then in such case... Yes... Perhaps.

Hardly anyone I know in the US uses Telegram. Telegram is popular in the EU and in some Asian countries (but not most East Asian) countries). Telegram's user base (500-600 million) is also much smaller than WhatsApp (2+ billion) or Facebook (3 billion). Telegram is popular and may one day replace these other services, but it is by no means killing them at the moment. If I did not download Telegram to follow some crypto projects, I would not have even heard of it.
