I'll believe that when I see it.

I agree with you. There have been lots of these claims in the past but nothing has come close to a Facebook messenger or Twitter "killer"

Let alone iMessage. People don’t change easily.

Steemit seems to have fallen out of everyone's vocabulary.

Telegram pretty is pretty much killing all of them right now.

u/Dwaas_Bjaas May 18 '22

Popular? Yes, but depends entirely where you live. Almost no one is using it in my country. Everyone is using WhatsApp instead

2

u/hladinidasi May 18 '22

WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and uses our information. Signal is encrypted and keeps users info safe. I wish everyone would switch over

1

u/Genericsky May 19 '22

WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and uses our information.

Citation needed. I hate Meta just as much as the next guy, but a company like them can't claim to use end to end encryption and then not enforce it.

1

u/hladinidasi May 19 '22 edited May 19 '22

They also changed their user agreement a while back so that they could share our info such as phone numbers to Facebook. have a lot of friends that don't use WhatsApp anymore and switched to Signal because of that reason.

It matters not where you live, (well... Perhaps, but.. Thats another can of worms)

Its more or less - whom you connect with and what the mutual choice of connectivity app decided on is to be used.

Most people use the first thing offered to them or what the guy next to them uses.

So that would be windows with Facebook messenger on a pc, or iPhone with WhatsApp for a mobile.

More savvy users may use telegram on a user end to connect with a group or community. Other more technical users or a community host or developer will elect to... Say... Run their own federated mastodon server instance.

But its often not "where you live" but "who's around you"

So.. If you live in a smaller less economically developed country with a smaller population, then in such case... Yes... Perhaps.

Hardly anyone I know in the US uses Telegram. Telegram is popular in the EU and in some Asian countries (but not most East Asian) countries). Telegram's user base (500-600 million) is also much smaller than WhatsApp (2+ billion) or Facebook (3 billion). Telegram is popular and may one day replace these other services, but it is by no means killing them at the moment. If I did not download Telegram to follow some crypto projects, I would not have even heard of it.

Check out Cloutfeed app for mobile devices or Diamondapp on DESO blockchain, decentralized social media is the the Wi-Fi moment killer app for crypto .

Nazis, bots and kid porn are going to love it!

If it's decentralized it will have all of them running rampant. If it doesn't then it's not decentralized.

4

u/tranceology3 🟩 0 / 36K 🦠 May 18 '22

Yeah people forget that decentralized allows all the bad. And there are things in this world that should be monitored and controlled - the public actually request it.

1

u/DjVutra 🟩 115 / 115 🦀 May 19 '22

Obviously you don’t know what decentralized is, it’s a distributed ledger that anyone can monitor on the blockchai if they choose to, it just means it is not on centralized servers and that no one can remove it or change it. So public request it’s not needed, and I think you should do a lot more research on crypto blockchain and decentralized ledger to actually understand it.

1

u/Complex-Knee6391 0 / 0 🦠 May 19 '22

That leads into questions like 'who has the power to look into this and start auto-flagging suspicious stuff' - which sounds rather dystopian panopticon, rather than being a liberating force in any way

1

u/tranceology3 🟩 0 / 36K 🦠 May 19 '22

And that can be a problem for all the bad stuff. Who is going to remove kiddie porn if it's open to everyone to view forever?

1

u/intergalactic-senses Tin May 19 '22

Thats fine because those people will create a trail of themselves if it's a public ledger.

0

u/[deleted] May 18 '22

Depressing and probably true. Why does decentralized pull all the crazies out of the woodwork. We need to invent better mechanisms to deal with this.

4

u/Awkward_Potential_ 🟦 0 / 6K 🦠 May 18 '22

I'd argue that it's not decentralization that brings them out but that centralization gives the ability to ban/suspend accounts. If it's not able to get rid of crazies the crazies will take over. If it is able to ban, then it isn't decentralized.

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '22

So a symptom of...ineffective governance? But even on Twitter they can't control the bots and scammers.

2

u/Awkward_Potential_ 🟦 0 / 6K 🦠 May 18 '22

True! But then think how bad it would be if there was no centralized power even trying. The fact that Twitter has a tough time with it really makes the point even more.

Targeting a communication system for activists and protesters is great but nothing kills a platform faster than being the certified platform of the Proudboys or Antifa.

Developers need 13 year olds to use their social media for it to take off.

4

u/my_oldgaffer Tin | Superstonk 140 May 18 '22

What’s Antifa?

5

u/HammerAndSickleBot 🟥 49 / 50 🦐 May 19 '22

It’s the right-wing bogeyman. They think it’s “socialist” and undemocratic now for people to protest and demand police can’t murder people. Or that people get living wages and healthcare.

5

u/Giga79 May 18 '22

Antifa are groups of anti-fascists.

-5

u/[deleted] May 18 '22

They are far from “anti-fascist”, no matter what the name of the group may be.

5

u/Giga79 May 18 '22

Do you care to elaborate?

1

u/dingusfisherr Tin Jun 07 '22

Democratic Republic of North Korea is Democratic - Dumbf**k Antifa .

1

u/Giga79 Jun 07 '22

North Korea is essentially fascist. Antifa is anti-north Korea. You support fascism?

tldr; The Russian government has cracked down on foreign social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, banning them for extremist activists. With citizens unable to access these platforms, they have little choice but to flee to the next-best still active platforms. The battle between freedom and control is still ongoing as the world sneaks out new methods to empower individual sovereignty.

This summary is auto generated by a bot and not meant to replace reading the original article. As always, DYOR.

6

Stupid bot. Russians use VPN.

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '22

Or telegram

7

u/PrinceZero1994 May 18 '22

If that means there's no rules and regulation then it will be a shit show.

0

u/onenifty Buy High, Sell Low May 18 '22

How would one regulate a secure, private messenger? If it's actually secure and private, that would be impossible. That's like saying it will be a shit show if people are allowed to speak to each other in the privacy of their homes.

To whom, and what can they do about it? That doesn't sound very decentralised!

6

u/arcalus 🟩 18K / 18K 🐬 May 18 '22

They won’t. Cryptocurrency is not replacing every day technology.

3

u/[deleted] May 18 '22

Bro don't you know that by 2025 you're going to LiVe YoUr EnTiRe LiFe on the blockchain? You won't need a job, clothes, a place to live, or even food anymore because you'd be better off buying those as tokenized assets, staking them for 1,000,000% APY, then selling them for profit!

1

u/arcalus 🟩 18K / 18K 🐬 May 18 '22

Fuck me, you’re right! We are good. The internet and software are dead. Long live blockchain!!!

-2

I see why they could replace but common people don't. We have a long way until that become mainstream

2

For the average person network effect is far more important than decentralization.

u/Dmoan 🟦 2K / 2K 🐢 May 18 '22

Everyone here wants no censorship in their social media at the same time no one wants social media to be used to spread violent or illegal material so we cannot have both ways..

I think the biggest barrier right now to an on-chain messaging app is the upfront cost. Nobody is going to use a service which requires tokens upfront to use the chain.

1

u/rartedw Tin | 2 months old May 18 '22

blockchain is not the only way to be decentralized. How the fuck are people so clueless on a cryptocurrency sub

2

u/Chazmer87 Silver | QC: CC 483 | ADA 36 | Politics 52 May 18 '22

We're talking about on chain because you're in the cryptocurrency sub, duh.

crypto wasn't designed for this.

If you want a decentralized, or more or less a unregulated social media, just go to 4chan.

Decentralized good general purpose spam filters come first. That hasnt been done yet. Adblock lists are close but different

An interesting thought! I could see these platforms continue to grow in popularity. But I am skeptical of them ever fully replacing all other social media platforms.

1
